Chapter 6: The Drive
The drive to Fredericksburg was a good twenty minutes. They drove through several cow and crop farms, and vast lands of metal windmills that stood like giants in the sky. The drive was very quiet. Judy couldn't help but glance back at Evo every few seconds. He looked out the window most of the time. Sometimes, he'd catch her staring, which made Judy look back at the road.
Evo watched the windmills turn over and over, until he felt Ralph rest his head on his lap. He froze, and looked at the dog.
Ralph's eyes were shiny, and looked up at Evo with a blank stare, he then yawned, and rolled over on Evo, lying on his back and popping out his belly. Ralph looked up at Evo, and waited for him.
Evo looked at the dog, then to Judy cluelessly.
Judy glanced back, and grinned, shaking her head.
"He wants you to rub his belly." She smiled, staring back at the road.
Evo looked at the dog, and placed his hand on the dog's belly. He uncomfortably started rubbing it. He started slow, but began going at a moderate pace.
"Like this?" He asked, looking at Ralph with disgust as he stick out his tongue and panted.
Judy glanced back, and nodded.
"Yeah, that's it." She said, turning up the AC.
"It keeps panting," he said worriedly, and asked, "is it dying?"
"Nah," she sighed, "He just being needy."
Judy continued driving until she saw faded skid marks on the road. She slowed down drastically and froze. Her heart sunk, and had trouble trying to breath.
"You're mean to animal. Why?" Evo asked curiously.
Judy avoided his question, and payed all her attention to the road in front of her.
Slowly, she drove down the road. She looked farther ahead to the right side of the road, and saw in the land of crops an opening. The opening was rather out of place since all the crops surrounding the opening were fully grown. It looked like the crops in the opening were torn out, as if they were pulled to allow a path for something.
As Judy drove by the opening, feeling like she was about to have a heart attack, she couldn't help but look into it to see a diagonal path.
In the dirt path, were two lines of colorful flowers that led to the end of the small path. The end showed a white cross that was covered in flowers, and had a small pine wreath that the cross had hung over it. Towards the bottom, there was a small plaque, with an image that she couldn't quite see, but knew who was in the picture.
She noticed herself breathing heavily, and accelerated abruptly until she was far from the opening. She stopped when she felt safe, and pulled to the side of the road. Evo was frightened by the sudden movement, and looked to Judy for answers.
"Are you okay?" He asked, holding onto Ralph who whimpered quietly.
Judy closed her eyes and pressed her forehead against the wheel. She took a few seconds to finally calm down.
"Yeah, I...just haven't driven in a while." She said, remembering the dirt path again.
Evo looked at her, confused, and looked outside. He observed his surroundings and nodded.
"This is good spot. Thank you. I must go now." Evo said, reaching over to the door. almost opening it before Judy stopped him.
"Whoa! We still got a way to go till we make it to town. I think it's best if I take you there. It'll save you tons of time." She informed him, but that didn't seem to bother him.
"No need," Evo refused, and opened the door, "on foot is better. Much safer than in this."
Judy sighed and set the truck in park, turning around to look at Evo.
"Look, I'm sorry 'bout what happened. I swear, it was a one time thing. It won't happen again." She assured him, and looked at his exposed body.
"Will you just let me get you a dang pair of clothes? I dunno why it's buggin' me, but my blanket is not meant for no diaper, hun." She told him.
Evo looked at his body, and couldn't deny that he needed something to cover up his scrawny body.
"Very well," he said, closing the door, and sitting back in his seat, "I stay only for clothes."
Judy sighed and turned around, setting the truck in drive.
"Well that makes me feel better," she said sarcastically, and drove back onto the road, heading towards the town.

Judy parked in an open spot in front of the market, in between two other vehicles. The street they were on was like a shopping center, only it looked like one of those towns that were featured in a western film. Trucks drove by, people walked along the sidewalks, more than usual since it were the morning. They walked in and out of one story buildings, or hung out in front of them, drinking a nice cold glass of cola.
Fredericksburg wasn't a very big town. It was a small place for a small population. Fredericksburg was the New York City for all the farmers. It was the place where they would set up their shops and sell what they've grown. Everyone knew each other in the town. The High School football games were the biggest social outlet for most of the people. They could care less about college or national. Every year they had a rodeo outside of town hall where everyone would get together for a party, to end the farming season. Judy always went to the rodeos, but this year, she wasn't so sure if she was going to go.
"Okay," Judy said, taking the keys out and asking, "what's your size for clothes?"
Evo tilted his head, confused. She groaned.
"C'mon, you really don't know?" She asked, hoping it would suddenly pop up in his head.
Evo shook his head, and looked outside at all the people walking around.
"Alright, well," Judy thought for a moment, biting her lip, "I guess I'll just pick some random clothes and let you decide."
"Very well," Evo agreed.
"Wait in the truck then. You don't wanna be seen out in public wearing...that." She pointed at the blanket he was wearing.
Evo looked at his diaper and back at Judy with a blank stare. Judy stared at him for a few moments until she rolled her eyes and got out of the truck. He watched her walk up to the door and enter the small store, leaving him to himself in the hot truck.
