Chapter 5: The Pod
Director Warren and Dr. Varrick sat in a moving helicopter. They sat across from each other, looking down through the windows at the fields of Texas. They both wore large headsets that allowed them to communicate.
Dr. Varrick studied Warren. He looked the same. He wore his honorable suit covered in dozens of medals. He was old, with short white hair. He was about six feet tall, and had broad shoulders that made him look buff. He wasn't big, but his suit made him look twice the man he was. He always carried a serious look, popping his chin to the right, with eyes that wandered.
Warren turned to Norman, and looked at him from head to toe.
He was shaking.
"Something wrong, Dr. Varrick?" He asked, turning his attention to Norman.
Norman looked away from the window, and shook his head.
"Not a fan of heights." He said, his voice wavy. Beads of sweat ran down his forehead.
Director Warren chuckled and stared out the window.
"After everything you've seen, heights still scares ya" He shook his head in disbelief with a grin.
Norman looked at him, offended.
"I hope you're wrong about this. Wasn't the incident a clear sign for you?" He leaned in, focusing on Warren and not the window.
Warren stared at Norman with a blank face.
"It was." He said, and looked back out the window.
Norman looked at him, and shook his head, leaning back in his seat.
"Arriving at the crash site. Get ready for departure." The helicopter pilot said through the headset.
The helicopter landed gently and gracefully on a dirt road in between fields. It landed behind dozens of trucks and Humvees, which were parked in a line on the dirt road. Soldiers scouted the area, and some were walking in groups into the fields. People stood by the Helicopter, a man in a hazmat suit, an old man with medals pinned on shoulders, and a high ranking soldier. The wind created by the Eurocopter blew into their faces, but they kept their stance with a blank stare.
The blades of the chopper slowed down, and as they did, the doors slid open. General Warren was the first to come out, then came Dr. Varrick. Warren looked fine, but as Dr. Varrick stepped down, he looked like he was going to be sick.
"Morning, everyone." He tipped his hat, and walked up to the three waiting together. He shook each of their hands with no pleasure, and forced a weak smile.
"Director Warren," he introduced himself as, "I'll be the head of this operation." He shook the person in the hazmat suit, and stepped back.
"Behind me is-"
They all heard the sound of puking behind Warren, and they turned to see what it was. Behind Warren, they saw Norman puking on the side of the road. They watched as he kept puking, and when he finished, he stood straight up like he hadn't in awhile, and wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
"Dr. Varrick." Warren rolled his eyes back to the people behind him.
"Does he have the clearance for this operation?" The supervisor asked, looking back and forth at the two.
Warren turned to the Supervisor. The Supervisor's name was Alfred Gore. He was the same age as him, if not, a bit older. He wore a serious face just like him, but was mostly bald, is it weren't for the random grey strands of hair. He was chubby and short, but puffed out his chest to make himself look tough.
"Don't worry, he's an old colleague who is well informed on this subject. We worked together in the past." Warren assured Gore. Gore looked at Dr. Varrick with suspicion, and shook his head, sighing and turning around to begin walking.
"Walk with me, Director." Gore said, walking down the side of the dirt road and into the farm field. The hazmat person and high ranking soldier followed behind him. Warren was about to walk with him, until he remembered Norman.
"Dr. Varrick, get it together. We're heading to the crash site." Warren said, and turned around, running to catch up with the rest.
Norman stood straight and sighed, wiping his mouth with his beige sweater. He walked down the side of the dirt road and went into the path that cut through the fields. He caught up to the group, but decided to stay behind but close to them. He looked at the crops, noticed that the crops closest to the path were burnt and ripped up. The path he was walking on felt squishy and but not at all wet. The way the path was made looked like a giant wheel had rolled through the field.
"Dr. Banner, inform me on the Pod." Warren insisted, walking in between the Supervisor and the other two.
Dr. Banner was the one in Hazmat suit. Her suit was white, a single air canister in the bottom center was installed, letting her breathe calmly. She was in her late forties, and walked at normal pace like the rest, but the way she walked made her seem like she were cautious in every step. She rarely blinked an eye, staring ahead as if traumatized. She had red hair that was pulled to the back, that way she could see what was in front of her. Her facial expression had a mixture between a serious, and nervous look, making it hard for Norman to see how she was feeling.
"Well," she started off, "it's unlike anything we've ever seen. We're gathering as many DNA samples as possible, but with just the few that we got, it expands the periodic table with ten new elements-"
"Dr. Banner, we need to discuss info that is important to the matter at hand." Warren cut her off.
She looked away, embarrassed, and cleared her throat, nodding.
"Of course, director. My apologies," she cleared her throat, "the size of the pod is like the size of an SUV. We're unsure of the use for this vessel, but after studying the interior, we learned that whatever this vessel was used for, it was controlled by one pilot."
"It doesn't sound like it poses much of a threat." Gore said.
"We'll see soon enough." Warren said, and walked ahead of the others towards the crash site.
They reached a large green biohazard tent at the end of the path. It was about the size of a house, and as tall as a basketball hoop. People in hazmat suits were seen entering and exiting, carrying thin briefcases and propane tanks. Their suits were white just like Dr. Banner's. Two soldiers with rifles guarded the entrance, staring blankly ahead.
Norman looked at all the people in hazmat suits, and noticed that they were the only ones entering without safety gear.
"Shouldn't we be wearing something as well?" He asked. The group stopped in front of the entrance, and Dr. Banner turned to Norman.
"There's nothing to worry about, Dr. Varrick. The chemicals that the vessel is releasing only affects those that are breathing it in for long periods of time. You're all staying no more than five minutes unlike the rest of the suits here." She said, and turned to Warren.
"When you're ready, Director." She said, pushing one of the flaps, ready to head in.
"Show me the pod." Warren ordered. Dr. Banner then entered, and the rest after.
When all of them were in, and Norman got a good look at what was planted in the center, his eyes widened.
The Pod, half of it in the ground, while the other was sticking out in the air, sparking electricity every now and then. The Pod looked like an unbloomed flower, with the pedals being layers of metal walls, and blue glowing outlines that flickered and faded non-stop. The vessel was badly damaged, except for the interior, which looked spotless. The interior was white with a cushion wall in the back, and on the sides, were a set of small screens and buttons that appeared to be off. The smell was horribly unique, a mixture of gasoline and stench of skunk. Scientists in hazmat suits were seen studying both the exterior and interior, along with the dirt surrounding the Pod.
"My God..." Warren said in awe, taking a step forward while the others stayed back. Dr. Banner stood next to him and wore a devilish grin as she looked at the Pod with him.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" She asked. The Pod sparked electricity as Warren nodded slowly.
"The Pod was empty when we reached it, but after gathering a bit of DNA, we found something rather... strange." Dr. Banner said curiously. Warren looked at the Pod carefully, and asked,
"How so?"
She breathed in, "well, the DNA sample shows a mixture of an unstudied life form and..." Dr. Banner paused dramatically. Warren turned to Dr. Banner, confused.
"And what?" He asked. Dr. Banner turned to Warren with a confused look on her face.
"Human DNA." She said. Everyone was stunned, but not more than Norman. He felt fear wash over him.
"T-that's not possible." He said with disbelief. Dr. Banner turned around and was about to explain how when Warren beat her to him.
"It is, Dr. Varrick. I know exactly what we're dealing with. And the one that came here through this Pod, couldn't have made it far." He said, turning around and walking to the exit.
"What's the nearest town from this field?" He stopped and asked.
"Fredericksburg." The Supervisor answered oddly.
"I want troops patrolling that town in the next hour." Warren ordered.
"Why? What are we dealing with here?" The Supervisor asked.
Warren slowly turned to the Supervisor and said, "we are dealing with 'something' that has the power to destroy anything it wants. A God-like power, with no control. That is what we're dealing with, Supervisor."
Warren turned around and exited the tent. The Supervisor was left speechless. Norman turned to the Pod, and gulped.
This can't be happening, he thought, and left the tent with the rest.
