Chapter 3: Contact

Washington D.C
The Pentagon
08:00 hours

Norman sat in front of his desk, and looked at all the files on his desk. His room was very small and packed. It was hard to get out of his desk without knocking over files and binders. His room was mostly dark other than the desk lamp that was turned on. Windows made up one side of his room, the side where his door was. Through the windows, he could see the hall that lead to all the other offices. People walkd by in uniforms, some walking casually, while others jogged like they were late.

Another day, he told himself, picking up his pencil and grabbing a form he had to fill out.

From the corner of his eye, he saw a lady in blue walking towards his office. The lady was in her mid thirties, just like Norman. He didn't find her attractive, but she was nice, and did her job the way she was supposed to as a secretary, which he appreciated. He watched her stop in front of his door, and knock three times.

"Come in," he said, leaning back in the chair and crossing his arms.

The lady in blue opened the door and stood by it, pointing her finger at his desk phone.

"Mr. Varrick, line three is waiting. The call says it's urgent."

"Whats acting up this time, the printer?" Norman smirked.

The lady shrugged.

"Not this time."

The lady backed out of the room and closed the door, leaving Norman by himself in his dark room. He grinned and reached for the phone, connecting to line three with just a few clicks. He raised the phone to his ear and leaned back.

"Mr. Varrick speaking," Norman said, looking at the ceiling with his other arm under his opposite armpit.

"You weren't that hard to find... Doctor." A deep, northern accent spoke in the phone.

Norman tilted his head, and leaned in towards his desk, suspicion growing over the person he was talking to.

"Who is this?" He asked, suddenly serious.

"An old aquatint, you might address me now, due to previous conflicts." The man said vaguely.

It took a second for Norman to start making sense out of the man's hints. Right when he started to figure it out, he jumped up from his chair and walked over to his door. He locked  it, and closed all the blinds to the windows. He peeked them to see if anyone was watching, which no one was. He turned around, looking at his wall of diplomas.

"I want a name." Norman demanded, whispering into the phone.

The man laughed.

"Why so secretive? You don't need to whisper."

"If this is who I think it is, I think we should both be careful on the next words we say."

"You're an intelligent man, Doctor. Of course you know who this is." The man said.

Norman rubbed his temple and sighed.

"You know the risks of calling me, Warren. Do you have any idea where I'm at?"

"Don't you think I knew the risks of calling you at your job, if there were any?"

Norman looked confused, pressing the phone into his ear.

"What do you mean?"

There was a brief silence before the man spoke again.

"Six hours ago, a small, unidentified vessel the size of a car, entered our atmosphere, and crash landed in Texas. My sources tell me the vessel was active for a short period of time, before deactivating shortly after its crash."

Norman still looked confused.

"So?" Norman asked, "What does that have to do with me?"

There was a brief moment of silence before Warren answered him.

"We have reason to believe that the vessel is from the ones that we encountered, which means..."

Norman froze, and was completely speechless. So many thoughts were racing in his mind. Fear suddenly spiked, and he started to panic in the inside. He thought it was long over. He thought he could relax for the rest of his life, put his past behind him and move forward. But if what Warren was saying was true, then he couldn't put it behind him.

"T-that's impossible..." Norman stuttered. He felt like he was about to pass out. It was all too much for him. He couldn't go through with it anymore. He wanted to quit, but it was all coming back to him, whether he wanted it or not.

"Pack your bags, Dr. Varrick. You're heading to Texas under the order of the President of the United States of America." General Warren said, and hung up, leaving Norman speechless in his dark office.
