Chapter 2: Evo

Judy rushed inside with the boy in her arms, and laid him down in the living room on her old couch. The boy was as cold as ice. She wondered how a boy could be so cold during a hot summer in Texas. It wasn't possible, but after touching this boy, she decided to give everything a second thought.

She grabbed a blanket which was on the couch, and covered the boy with it, tucking him nice and snug. She stood there, watching the boy shiver in the blanket. She gave the boy a minute, expecting him to warm up and stop the shivering, but he continued.

Ralph came into the house, sitting down calmly and looking at the boy with a tilt head. He was probably wondering the same thing Judy was: What was up with this kid?

After a minute of watching the boy squirm around in the blanket, she knew that it wasn't helping. She quickly bent down and got close to the boy. The boy smelled bad. She reacted instantly, and covered her nose, wanting to vomit. Jeez, did this kid run through a cow farm?

"I'm gonna run you a hot bath, I'll be back in a bit, okay?" She covered her nose. A bath was beneficial in a lot of ways. The boy could warm up, and he could also clean himself from all the dirt (she hoped it was dirt) and maybe even smell nice.

The boy chattered his teeth, and his eyes were closed. He held onto the blanket tight, and Judy swore before she left to go start the bath, she heard the boy tear the blanket.

She went up her old stairs and ran down the hall with pictures framed over the two walls. Most of the pictures were of her and Tyler, standing in certain spots on the farm. There were pictures of them standing in front of their old, wooden house. Others of them taking a walk through their sunflower field, back when their plants were still well nourished. Every picture, they were both seen smiling, holding tight onto each other's hands like they'd never let go, not even for a second. She remembered those days like they were yesterday. Every single second of those memories were imprinted in her mind. It was quite hard not to remember a specific time, because mostly, there was only one emotion she felt while being with him. And that was happiness.

She went into her bathroom that was in the hall, and went over to the bathtub. There, she clogged the drain, turned the hot water valve, and watched the water slowly fill up the tub, steaming up the room. She waited till the tub was almost full, and turned the valve off. She glanced at the tub, told herself that it was ready, and ran back down stairs.

When she came back down, she saw that the boy had torn a hole in her blanket. How did he do that to my blanket, she asked herself. The boy looked significantly worse. His nose was turning red, and his eyes were squinting, looking like he were about to sneeze.

"F-f-freezing." The boy stuttered, trying to make use of the blanket.

Judy picked the cold boy up from the couch, and carried him up the stairs and into the bathroom. She could feel the heat from the water swarm over her, and so could the boy, his chattering slowly starting to ease. She crouch down with boy and looked at the boy.

"I'm going to put you in the water, okay?"

The boy didn't say a word. He kept on mumbling about how he was cold.

Without preparing the boy, she lowered him into the tub. She expected to hear a long sigh of relaxation come out of the boy, but as soon as he touched the water, he started to scream.

"Hot hot hot!" The boy splashed the water, soaking Judy with the hot water. He was kicking his feet and throwing his hands, sending water flying all over the walls and mirrors. She gasped and closed her eyes, opening her mouth as she froze up, feeling the water run all over her arms. She was not expecting to get soaked with hot water at three in the morning.

"Stay still!" She kept the boy in the tub, trying to reduce any more of his splashes.

Soon, his splashes minimized, and he calmly sat in the tub. His eyes were closed, but his lips cracked a smile.

"Nice..." the boy said relaxingly. Judy guessed most likely that he needed time to adjust to the water's temperature.

"Alright good," Judy nodded, "time to scrub you."

Judy grabbed a bar of soap and a scrubber from inside the bathroom cabinet. She soaked the two items with the hot water, which was starting to turn brown because of the dirt all over the kid. She then started to rub them together, creating bubbles that steadily grew big.

"I'm gonna wash you, okay? Stay still for me, will ya?" She told him, and dipped the scrubber in the tub. The water started to look cleaner than before, but it still had the icky brown color swimming around. Slow and steady, she scrubbed the dirt off of the boy. She was expecting him have another freak out, but no. He was calm, keeping a smile on his face and acting as if the wash were a massage.

It was silent between the two. The only sound in the bathroom was of the water splashing against the ceramic. She couldn't help but glance at the boy. His hair was a mess, he smelled so bad, and his breath smelled like a garbage field, yet, he was so calm about it. He wasn't crying over the huge cuts he had on his body, or how he was lost in the middle of the night on some remote farm. The only thing that concerned him was how cold he was.

"Where ya from kid?" She asked, trying to scrub hard on a mound of dirt attached to his knee.

The boy didn't say a word. He stayed quiet. Judy didn't even think the boy was listening.

"How's ya find this place, anyway? Usually people have to call if they want to get here." She made herself laugh. Whenever someone had to visit, she'd always have to give directions by phone because on the GPS, the radars wouldn't detect the dirt roads that lead to their house.

The boy didn't answer, instead, he looked down at the water, and didn't blink an eye.

Judy glanced at the boy, frowned, and continued to scrub.

"You know, if you talked, this would be a lot easier for the both of us."

The boy looked at Judy for the first time, and had a blank stare on his face.

"You are stranger." The boy said simply.

Judy took her hand out of the water, and raised it in front of the boy with a bright smile.

"My name is Judith, but you can call me Judy like everyone else."

The boy looked at the hand, and slowly lifted his hand out of the water. Shyly, he pointed his finger and softly poked her palm. He looked back Judy, wondering if that was satisfiable.

Judy looked oddly at the boy, and shook her head like she wanted to forget what had just happened.

"For a second, I thought you weren't gonna say anything. What's your name?" She asked, continuing to scrub.

The boy looked straight, and ignored her question. She saw how he was ignoring her, and started to get ticked off.

"So you're not gonna talk, huh?" She started scrubbing at some dirt which wouldn't come off. The boy seemed focused on a candle which was at the corner of the tub, staring deeply at it. She wondered why he was so concentrated on the candle, but she ignored it, and continued to scrub.

"You know I can't keep you here. I'm gonna have to call the police and let them know you're here, in case someone's looking for you-"

"No." The boy sat straight up, alarmed, and finally looked at her. Judy saw how suddenly nervous he had gotten. She looked at him weirdly,

"What?" She asked.

"No police." He waved his finger, and sat back in the tub.

Judy found his accent rather weird. His English sounded broken, like he were a foreign and English was his second language. Maybe he wasn't from the country. He sounded a bit Russian, but not entirely. That was the best accent she could make out though. He sounded very serious, which frightened Judy because he was just a kid. She started to become suspicious over the boy, wondering even more who this boy was.

"Well, if you don't want me to call the police, then you have to tell me something about yourself." Judy said, making the last scrub and staring at the boy, waiting for him to say something.

The boy looked at her, and raised an eyebrow. He looked at her, and saw how interested she was in him. He rolled his eyes and shrugged.

"Just my name." He pointed his finger at her.

She nodded, excited to hear the boy's name. Finally, she was getting something out of the boy.

The boy looked straight, and his facial expression was blank, like he were remembering memories that stuck with him forever.

"I am Evo." He said, staring at the blank wall.

Evo? What kind of name was that, she asked herself, staring suspiciously at the boy. This couldn't be real. A boy, named 'Subject Evo' came into her house naked. It had to be some sort of prank by the kids in town.

The boy frowned, and looked down at all the dirty water surrounding him.

Just as Judy was about to tell him to get out of the tub, she saw a red light glow from the back of his neck. The glow was weak, but it was enough to notice it through his long hair.

"Hey," she said, reaching for his neck, "what is that-"

The boy instantly turned to her, and slapped her hand away.

"No."

Judy looked at the boy strangely, and covered her hand, keeping in her slight pain. She looked into the stern brown eyes of the boy in fear, and asked him:

"What's that Red light-"

"No. More. Questions." He pointed at her.

"Okay!" Judy raised her hands in the air, frustrated by how little she knew about him.

The boy looked back at the water, and stared blankly at his dirty reflection. Silence washed over for a few seconds, until he broke it.

"Now..." he pointed to his back, eyes closed, "scrub. I like it."
