Chapter 14: Retribution
Recap
Josh and Matty had been successful into kidnapping Ashton Lambert, their prime suspect. However, later, Mia gets kidnapped by Jake, the same stranger who had violated her privacy by kissing her. He interrogates Mia in his own way, while Matty and Josh interrogate Ashton in their own way. Matty lets Ashton go after a brief interrogation and asks Josh to get some food from the nearest outlet. But, Josh after exiting the building finds Ashton engaged in some secret call, he eavesdrops on him. He discovers that Ashton lied, or, he told the half truth to them. Josh asks Matty to track Ashton's phone.
Matty
"Where the hell were you!" I shouted as soon as my eyes darted to the figure walking into the room rolling her shoulders and snapping her neck. Anger within me darted up to my brain and I shouted at her.
"Couldn't you have texted us or something?"
She stopped in her tracks and batted her eyelids in shock. I could feel her swallowing on seeing my intense anger. I had to force myself to do the job of interrogating Ashton when she was the one to do it. Josh couldn't do it because there had to be someone stronger to keep Ashton in check incase he pulls off any tricks to break himself free.
I rose from my seat slowly folding my arms over my chest and simply sternly glaring at her soft glowing face. Seriously, it was very hard to do that, unless you are pretty adamant about it.
Mia's rose bud semblable lips pouted and her eyes glimmered with an unnatural sparkle softening the anger sieging my heart. That's why I said it was hard to maintain my anger. But no, I needed my answers therefore, I gathered my whole pathetic self up, that was melting bits by bits in front of her.
I sighed loudly as she stopped right in front of me, curved her eyebrows and her lips flashed a toothy smile.
"Uh-sorry?"
I rolled my eyes and snapped fingers in front of her face.
She flinched on impact yet joined her hands together twisting her body side to side like a kid who has a tonsillitis asking for a chocolate ice-cream.
"Please?"
I swatted my hand showing the ultimate disapproval. I wasn't going buy any of those tricks, I was angry and I seriously meant it.
She hooked her arm around my arm and bounced up and down. " Please Matty please."
I swiftly turned towards her to shoot angry glares straight into her eyes with a zoomed-in impact and almost bumped my face with hers.
We flinched on the impact hence aborting all the possibility of what could have happened, but our noses did brush against each other that ignited fears of what would have happening if my lips had landed straight onto hers.
She squeaked widening her eyes as she used her reflexes to pull back immidiately before we would regret rest of our lives if it had happened. I flinched too on the impact and cleared my throat straightening my hoodie.
If Mia's reflexed weren't that strong, we would have kissed, err, pecked. I haven't even had thought of anything as such in all these years and I wouldn't think of it even in the next 50 or 60 years.
I put a break on my thoughts and pulled myself together, reinstalling the same angry stern face I had when she showed up.
"Dammit where the were you?!" I pierced her eyes with my glare but from a good three meter distance between us.
"I- had some work to do." She drawled when she answered, which meant she was picking her words carefully. By that very instant my ears tingled which meant she was lying. And, I could also tell it by the way her eyes averted from my face as she spoke.
I snapped. "More important than this?"
She stuttered." I-I didn't mean that." She extended her hand to caress my arm, I withdrew my hand immidiately.
"Don't say it! You were the one who made us do it, and you're the one who left the group when we needed you." I rolled my eyes and leaned against the table.
She pursed her lips and scrunched her eye brows in surprise.
"Really you want to do that?"
Small sweat beads formed on her nose which glistened like dew drops on moist lawn.
I shot up a death glare at her which made the final call. She showed her hands and surrendered.
"Just tell me the truth okay?" I softly spoke to her hoping she'll give away whatever she was holding inside of her.
"I am telling you the truth." She curved her eyebrows squeezing my shoulder and cooed. I pulled my hand away.
"You're going to do this all day right?" I whispered in a gruff voice. She blinked her eyes at me blankly.
"Then why the hell am I talking to you I shouldn't even talk to you." I blurted out, arrogantly averting my body.
"S-sorr-"
"Don't even say it!" I shushed her.
"Matty-"
"Bzzzz-"
"Mat-"
"Bzzz.
"Ple-"
"Shhh. I don't wanna talk and I won't unless you come up with something reasonable."I waited.
The sound of crushing paper, rough scribbling, the table shaking scraping the white tiles underneath its heavy weight and something clattering on the table came from behind me.
I gingerly turned my neck to glimpse at what she was doing.
A strip of paper jutted beside my arm.
Sorry
I sighed softening at her hardwork.
I knew she was going to stop at nothing to make me talk to her, so I granted her wish.
I turned towards her pouting, crumbling the message between my fingers and staring coldly into her glimmering brown eyes. Her hair cascaded down her shoulders and a hot red small bump on her neck caught my attention. It seemed she had donated her blood to a mosquito.
She took a step forward, extended her arms, a smile running down her lips.
"Friends?"
I couldn't stop my lips from pulling up, my cheeks from flushing pink and frowing my forehead as I pulled her into a hug and grinned.
The warmth between us increased, turning into heat and making us many times warmer than before and the room was tersely forcing us into pulling away as our front body in contact began to heat up fast with our hug.
I pulled away gently and gestured her to sit.
"Where's that idiot?" She questioned me as she sidled to take her seat.
"Josh is fetching burgers for me, he'll be back soon." I propped my hand on the table and leaned on the table."You want something?"
"Naw I am full."
Weird.
"Do you have water?" She eyed the room then darted to me.
I picked up the plastic bottle and showed her."Empty."
She nodded in response.
"But Josh is bringing water so he'll be here any minute." I assured her.
"Uh- actually can you tell him to bring for me too? My belly is damn wailing." She pointed her finger at her belly.
Weird again.
"When did your 'full' belly became empty all of a sudden?" I frowned my forehead.
"Just now." She smiled and convulsed with laughter. I chuckled awkwardly, thinking what was so funny.
She is so weird today.
Did she bump her head into the wall?
"What?" She stared at me, tugging me out of my thoughts.
"Uh-nothing. I should text Josh." I grabbed my samsung phone and typed the text.
"And done." I kept the phone beside me on the table, and smiled.
"Oh-kay." she stretched her arms and rubbed her knees.
"You didn't tell me where were you." I raised my voice aiming to prompt her into answering.
She stopped rubbing her knees, belched loudly and straightened her back.
Mia
Why the hell does he keep questioning the same damn thing when I don't want to answer anything related to that!
I straightened my back and pulled myself together. I belched loudly giving up, fearing the question he was throwing so many times at me. But this time, I had to answer him, at least something, that will make him quiet for a while.
"I told you! I had some work." I answered him with compulsion.
"This is not going to work Mia. What are you hiding?" Her calmly looked at me but it felt like his gaze penetrated into my eyes.
"I am not hiding!" I snapped. " It's that...It's-" my voice trailed off. " It's not something I should tell." My voice dimmed and I gazed at my fingers.
The smell of Jake's scent still lingered on my body, or. . .maybe I was hallucinating. Matty sternly gazed at my face, not allowing me to ease. He wanted his goddamn answers.
"Its not something to be talked about." I lowly spoke to him.
He narrowed his eyes and waited.
I sighed. " I went to visit my gyno."
"At the time of interrogation?" He didn't wither from the same state and continued with narrowing his eyes at me.
I chose my words very carefully like I was walking into a death trap.
"It was urgent. I. . .took an emergency appointment weeks back regarding the pains in my lower belly, but that day it worsened. . .so. . . I had to take an emergency appointment." I bobbed my head as my sentence ended.
He lifted his one eyebrow and pouted." You could've texted us. Me, him, Dolce, anyone."
"Battery problem." I swallowed. "My phone's dead."
"Okay." He drawled eyeing me suspiciously then shrugged finally accepting my excuse. His phone buzzed diverting his attention .
I rolled my eyes and heaved out air as he turned his head towards the table to grab his phone.
He snatched it up, unlocked it and then scrunched his face weirdly, as his face twitched back forming a double chin.
"What?" I spoke as I eyed his face and the phone in his hands. The spiderman's eyes printed at the back cover stared me, or maybe anywhere, it hit my head suddenly that spiderman's eyes in the mask didn't had pupils drawn on it.
He moved his phone up closer to his face, typed something and plonked it on the table, ran fingers through his chocolate brown hair, and rubbed the nape of his neck. His biceps outlined in the tautening sleeves of his grey hoodie.
"What happened?" I eyed him sluggishly.
"How can we miss this! Dammit!" He thumped the table with his fist.
"Dolce?" He hollered tunnelling his tussled hair with his fingers.
"Aye aye." Dolce walked into the room stomping. Well he wasn't stomping for real but his heavy body made it look like he was stomping whenever he walked.
"Start Ashton's PTS."
Phone tracking system what's going on!
"What's going on?" I rose from the seat eyeing them both my eyes flicking switching between him and Dolce. Matty ransacked the table, pushing away files, stacks of papers and a pen rolled down from the table.
"Matty." I lowly spoke to him.
Matty stopped with his ransacking the table act and turned to me.
"Mia we messed up, I-" he stopped.
"I'm so sorry." He frantically arranged the table, I lanced towards him and squeezed his shoulders making him turn towards me.
"Tell me everything." I gazed at him calmly.
He, feeling assured that I wouldn't be angry or hit his head if I get to know about the blunder they had created, he told me.
Everything.
I tried my best to control the urge to not thump his head, but in the end I snapped.
I slapped his arm, err not gently.
"Owwww." He winced and rubbed his arm. "Why did you do this!"
"That's Retribution." I stated strongly.
"That's not my fault." He rubbed and winced.
I rolled my eyes, smirked and waved my fingers back to him, walking away from the table." No problem Matty, justice is served."
"What!?" He squeaked.
"You'll see. Now I'm taking over this mission. Dolce, hand me Ashton's number. You're not going to get away so easily, Mr. Ashton Lambert."
Dolce scribbled a number on a random flyer from his phone and thumped it onto the table I had seated myself to work on Matty's laptop.
I typed the number into the laptop screen.
Matty sidled to me, and rested his hand beside me on the table. His figure hovered over my back, as I slouched when I worked in the computer. I felt warm with his figure hovering over my back, cutting of the supply of air from behind.
His eyes advertently fixated on the laptop screen, his pupils convulsed as several options popped on the screen.
He bit his lip pondering over which one to pick.
"Click this one." He pointed at the option which said conversation mode.
"Okay!" I squealed. He clapped on my back that cracked my spine.
I groaned and slapped his hand, then clicked on the conversation mode.
All the call and text details of his phone listed on the pitch black screen in green letters. Matty ran his index finger narrowing his eyes.
"Click on this one." He tapped on one option on the screen.
"But this is a call record not the ongoing call. We'd have to ask the telecom company for the recorded call." I hoped he'd give up because asking telecom companies for permission was a tedious job.
"No problem." He tapped on the table and moved away from the screen.
I sniffed and put the earpiece over my ears.
"Here we go."
The number to the telecom office displayed on the screen.
I clicked on the call button.
