Chapter Four ; The Element Of Surprise
{ Alex's POV }
I woke up curled up on top on Miles. Fear shot through me and I quickly stood up trying to get away from the sleeping man. He whined in protest and curled up as he tugged the blankets closer around him. My breathing because shaky as I ran to the bathroom. Did Miles wake up in the middle of the night as see me cuddles with him? Was he upset. Was he confused. I closed the bathroom door behind me and splashed freezing water on my face. Calm down Alex calm down. Everything will be fine. I heard some commotion and then a voice sounded by the door.
"Al?" Miles called out.
"Yeah, mate?" I replied trying to hide my nerves.
"Ye' alright?" he called. "How ye' feeling?"
"Yeah, fine. Much better." I said quickly just wanting him to go away. After drying my face I made my way out of the bathroom and started towards the kitchen. As I walked out of the hallway, I saw Miles sitting on the couch, looking at his phone. I didn't like phones all that much. I didn't like technology all that much. As others have said, I'm "too old fashioned for that stuff". I agree. I went straight into the kitchen. I don't know what I fully intended to grab, but I just needed something. I felt my stomach growl. Perhaps I was just hungry and that's why I have been so panicky on this odd day. After standing in the kitchen for a moment, and biting my lip, flashbacks of my dream came to me. Heat filled my face as I recalled a moment of... Me kissing Miles in this kitchen. An odd dream, but one that I strangely enjoyed. I shook my head. I'm mental, I really need food. I quickly grabbed some random junk food from the cabinet and dug into it. It was stale but it definitely sated my hunger. I pushed my hand into the bottom of the bag pulling up crumbs in my hand. I scrunched my nose up and sadly threw the bag away as nothing was left. My heart did a little nervous flutter as I made my way over to Miles.
I sat on a sofa and watched him for a second before saying, " Hey Mi, um, do you wanna go out for food? "
Miles looked up at me and a blush crept up on my cheeks despite my effort to stay calm. As I stared, hoping that he didn't notice my blush, what I did notice was how the corners of his mouth turned up a bit. The way they did when a thoughtful smile was in the works on his face.
"D'you plan on going out like that?" He asked, almost laughing. I looked back down at my fairly bare chest, and sweat pants.
"Eh, well, no? Unless you want me to?" I said, raising my eyebrows and pushing my chest out a bit. My eyes were wide in attention and a large smile found its way on my face as I saw him begin to blush.
"Go get dressed, ya git. Then we'll get food." He responded, looking away with a chuckle.
I nodded with a blush still painting my cheeks as I got up and made my way back to my room. I pulled out some random jeans and a shirt pulling my old leather jacket on over my arms. After tugging my shoes on I made my way downstairs.
" Cmon princess I'm starving, " I said in a teasing tone. He scowled at me.
" Look who's talkin sleeping beauty, " he chuckled out, a smirk playing on my lips.
I blushed darker and grumbled, " C'mon let's just go. "
"Alright, alright!" He said getting up, rolling his R's as his overdramatic personality made him do sometimes.
I opened the door, and Miles placed his shoes on before we step outside. I lock the flat door and we make our way to the elevator. I made little movments, being impatient. I wanted to get outside so I could have a smoke. I was craving one, and I could already taste the smoke.
"Al, calm down, mate." Miles sounded from beside me.
"I want a cig." I whined.
"Y'always do, ya' git." He responded. I giggled, it was true.
When the elevator finally opened and I practically sprinted into the small space. Miles shook his head and chuckled as he walked in with me. The elevator door closed and he pressed the button for the first floor. I stared at Miles and let my mind wander.
I imagined pinning him against the elevator wall and kissing his forcefully, our lips becoming swollen from kissing so hard.
A blush overtook my features and I shook my head to make the image go away. Now I really need a cig. The elevator door opened and I ran out the doors into the crisp late afternoon air. A cigarette was already lit and between my lips by the time Miles walked up next to me.
For the minute or two that I addictivly sucked down the cig smoke, no thought intruded my mind. Usually I'd never smoke this fast, but I felt desperate for one. It was soon gone, and I lit another, this time taking a long slow puff, holding in the smoke, and then letting my head fall back, as I slowly blew the smoke from my lips.
I kept my lips puckered for an additional second, before bringing my head back down, and looking over to Miles. His mouth was hanging open for a moment as he stared at me but he quickly covered up that expression with a question.
"Resturant down the road?" He asked. I nodded, taking another puff.
"Cig?" I offered.
"No thanks." He said, turning away as we walked along. As we walked, we would playfully shove each other, stop randomly and watch the other stop, and flick each others heads. When we made it to the restaurant I was on my third cig. I dropped the butt and crushed it beneath my boot before blowing out the last of the smoke through my nose. Miles opened the door and I stepped inside looking around at the people waiting. A growl escaped my throat as my hunger became more intense.
" Can we go somewhere else Mi? I don't think I can wait this long. " I murmured.
Miles laughed, " Awe c'mon mate you can make it, " He patted my back and we sat down waiting our turn to be seated. My stomach grumbled and I sighed as I curled up and leaned against Miles.
" Mi... " I whined out.
"Al! The queue isn't that long! We'll be seated in no time." He said.
"But, I'm so hungry..." I said in a ghostly form of my deep voice. I heard Miles chuckle. I smiled upon hearing the noise. A few minutes had passed and my stomach almost ached.
"Oh my god Mi." I let out.
"What now?" He asked.
"I may just have to go cannibalistic." I stated, trying to be serious.
"Well you ain't eating me, mate!" He laughed.
"You're closest! So you'll have to do!" I joked, grabbing his arm and trying to bite it.
His resistance made it to where I was tugging but he wouldn't come any closer, he began giggling and laughing.
"Stop it!" He let out leaning back with a laugh. I finally let go of his arm, satisfied with my joke. I leant back against him, the hunger slowly coming back with the lack of distraction.
"Kane, table for two?" The hostess called.
"YES!" I cheered, jogging after the hostess, a chuckling Miles following closely behind.
I sat down in a chair across from Miles when we got to the table. I practically threw the menu at him as I already knew what I wanted.
" Order for me please? " I said in a quiet voice.
He nodded in understanding, " Yeah of course what do you want? "
" The usual for me... " I replied taking one of the glasses of water on the table and sipping from it. I could practically feel the water hit the bottom of my stomach with an empty pang. He nodded in response and waited for the waitress to come.
I stared at Miles as he looked across the menu, he sniffed every once in a while. I stared at his face and noticed that when he came across a certain part of the menu, his eyebrows scrunched in thought. It was usually easy to tell when Miles was lost in a thought. At least, for me it was. We'd known each other for so long that we knew each others mannerisms, and even thoughts sometimes.
Finally the waitress came and she asked if we were ready. "Yeah, we are." Miles responded, closing the menu.
"What would you like?" She asked, looking between us.
"Both of us are going to have an order of the Fish and Chips." He said. I smiled, Miles knew just what I wanted. He always did...
"Anything else to drink besides water?" She asked. Miles looked at me. I gave him a blank stare, and then raised my eyebrows.
"Nah, I think water is fine." He said, eyes not leaving mine.
The waitress looked between us before saying,
"Alright." And walking away.
I smiled at Miles and played with a fork on the table.
" Did I ever tell you that when I was really young I used to call fish and chips, fishy chippers? " I asked.
Miles burst out laughing and shook his head. " You fuckin weirdo, that's adorable. Almost as adorable as when you said I a nappa on stage! "
I blushed and chuckled a bit. " What can I say? I'm an adorable guy, " I sent a grin his way and watched as his cheeks turned red. My grin spread wider across my face. I watched him with adoration as he fiddled with his jacket zipper.
"Hey, Mi..." I called. He looked up. " I a nappa." I mimicked the way I said it that night on stage.
He giggled and stuck his fingers in his water glass, flicking water at me. I laughed and wiped the water off me. We went into silence for a little bit, though we kept making eye contact and looking away. It became a game where I'd catch him looking, he'd look away, he'd look back, I'd squint my eyes and he'd laugh, and I'd smile.
It was like we were when we first met. I've always remembered every moment that I spent with Miles, except when I were drunk. Suddenly, I was brought out if my thought, when I felt a light shove on my leg. I looked at Miles as he looked away, a pretend innocent look on his face. I shoved his leg back, and he did it again.
We continued this until the waitress came back , setting our baskets in front of us. We just made eye contact and tried to hold back our laughter as we thanked the waitress.
I started devouring my food as soon as it was placed down. I don't think I've ever been this hungry before. Miles nudged me with his leg and I looked up, swallowing the rest of my food in my mouth. He stifled a giggle and held a chip up to my mouth. I chuckled and bit into the chip playing along with his game. He busted up laughing at my antics as did I. We sat there laughing for about 10 minutes straight before we finally stopped, both of us panting and giggling messes. I continued to eat watching Miles now with mild fascination.
I continued to chew as I watched the loveable man before me. The smile lingered on his lips from before, making him look even more pleasant and friendly than he already was. These feelings that I had for him were not new. Granted, I always pushed them aside, and we were generally flirty with each other. We had been since the first moment that we'd met.
I never knew if he returned these feelings, and being the nervous timid man that I was, I was too scared to find out. I appeared confident to alot of people because I could hide myself behind my sunglasses, slick back hair, and laid back demeanor. Though I will admit, I let a lot of nervous ticks slip through. I brought myself out of thought, and focused back on Miles, who was now looking at me puzzled, as he bit a chip and chewed on it.
" What's that look for? " I asked, curiosity lacing my voice. His cheeks turned red.
" Nothing, " he murmured eating some more chips.
I just sighed and finished my food. I watched him eat waiting for him to finish impatiently. As I started thinking back to this morning my mind got clouded with depression. I need another cig and some alcohol. I took out my wallet fully intending to pay for our meal but Miles stopped me.
" I'll pay Al. Don't worry about it. " He sent me a big smile and my heart thumped painfully in my chest.
"I'm- I'm gonna wait outside, yeah?" I said. He nodded and wiped his mouth. I took no hesitation in getting out of the restaurant and taking a few steps up the road, not too far away. I pulled out a cig, placing it between my lips and letting it dangle, as I reached in my pockets grabbing my light.
