You Don't
"Please sir, I have the money to pay for it!"
"I cannot allow a minor to purchase merchandise in our store. Come again with your legal guardian." The man at the front desk is 100% done with me, but I can't help but try. Even though I rarely argue back especially to adults, I really need these glasses. I've gotten letters from Koji's teacher's at least once a month saying he has difficulty reading the board. I already saved up my money to buy it, but of course nothing can ever go my way.
"You don't understand! I can't get him, he's away at the moment!" I try pleading with him, but like I said he won't budge. The lady in the store just scoffs at me before looking at the glasses in the women section, but I can't help but notice her glancing at the kids every so often while they try different glasses on. Did she think they were going to steal a pair?
"Then I guess you'll just have to wait until he comes back." The man, which after looking at his shirt I figured out is named Owen. He might be a foreigner maybe? Either that or his parents just favored American names. Not the time Denki.
"I can't just wait, I need to order it now!" Thank goodness that lady is the only one in the store, because I am making too much noise.
"I'm going to ask you to leave our store. You are disturbing the other customers." There's only one lady in this store and I'm pretty sure she hated me even before I walked through the door. I feel bad for her kids, if she has any.
"Please, just let me pay for it. The money is all in cash. Look!" I take out the small black box from my bag. The money is all crumbled inside, but I know that it's all there. "I counted and checked the prices before I left, it should be rig-."
"I've told you once and I'll tell you again. You cannot order a pair of glasses at this facility without a legal guardian."
"But if I just pa-." I tried putting the box on his desk, but he only pushes it back into my hands.
"No, you can't. Leave the store and come back with an adult or don't come back at all." He's not even looking at me anymore. He's done with this conversation. Why can't I be?
"You can't just do this." I grip the strap of my bag tighter. The edges of the pins I half hazardously placed on are piercing into my skin. This will be the one time I regret putting a yellow star on a bag.
"I can and I just did."
no
"But-."
No
"Leave."
NO
Can't this guy just be guilt tripped? I'm trying so hard over here! It's no use, I messed up again.
I'm just a fuck up.
Koji was looking forward to this too. How do I break it to him? All Might help me.
"Come on, let's go." I call for the kids. They're in the kids section shoving different colors of glasses on Koji. Well, it's more like Sumie is shoving the glasses on him while the boys stare in fear because Sumie is not one to mess with. I'm gonna miss my little princess.
Haru, Toshi, and Kai walk over while Sumie and Koji rush to put the pairs of glasses back in their rightful spots. Well actually Sumie is just directing Koji on where to put them while she watches like the little dictator she is. I won't lie when I say I'm scared of her sometimes.........
"Denki, are we not going to buy the glasses?" Toshi tugs his brother along. Kai looks like he's having difficulty with walking even though he's basically being dragged. I'll have to check up on him once we make it to the house.
"No, not today. We'll get them another time, okay?" I avoid eye contact with them and see the lady in the store again. This time she's smirking at me. She's a mythic bi- not the time for Heathers.
My hands are shaking, but I'm trying not to show it. My strategy is, if I grip the strap of this shoulder bag harder then they won't be able to see it. They're a bunch of five year old's anyway, why am I so scared of lying to them?
Toshi and Sumie finish and they walk back to us. Toshi immediately grabs my hand and holds it tight. As if I didn't feel like complete shit earlier. He looks up at me with that look of understanding a five year old shouldn't have. My heart breaks at the sight of it. Physically shatters. Gone. Poof.
"Sorry for wasting your time sir." I bow to Owen, the really nice and kind guy that helped me realize I don't deserve anything.
I already have someone doing that at home, now I have to worry about places like the eye doctors. Lovely.
"Good day."
I try not to ball my eyes out like some baby, but I can't help but feel defeated. Toshi's grip on my hand tightens and I decided that now is the best time to leave. Though it's just never that easy.
"Present Mic?!"
There he was in all his glory. My English teacher who doesn't have his hair slicked up, rather it's in loose bun and the baby hairs seem to be held together with a black headband. He definitely looks different in comfort clothes then when he's at school, but since it's the weekend I suppose he'd relax. A thousand thoughts are racing through my mind, but the one that sticks out the most is how that cat cardigan he's wearing is most likely Mr. Aizawa's. I know they're married. I'm not dumb.
"Hello there Kaminari, funny seeing you here!"
"Oh, I was just leaving." I move to the side so he can make his way into the store, but after entering he just continues to talk.
What was I expecting anyway? He's just an older version of me.
"Come to get a pair of glasses? I didn't know you owned a pair." I think it's funny how he hasn't acknowledged the fact that the five kids behind me are actually with me and not some random tag-alongs. It's either that or he had a talk with Mr. Aizawa, which makes sense since you know, they're married.
My theory is gonna be proved right one day, I know it.
"I originally planned on getting a pair, but I uh changed my mind. I'll just wait till another day."
"Well that's a bummer isn't it? You wouldn't mind if you waited for me? I need to pay something off really quickly and I wanted to discuss something with you after."
Now normally I'd be concerned on what he wanted to talk about. I'd have a million theories and ideas on what it is, or what I did wrong, but I really couldn't care at this point. This day has already gone to shit, nothing else could make it worse.
"I wouldn't mind at all!" I beam before ushering the kids back into the building.
"I told you to not come back here without a guardian." Owen, oh sweet Owen, grumbles at the sight of me. I completely understand, I would grumble at the sight of me too, but I already do that every morning so Owen if you could kindly piss off that would be nice.
Shut up, your inner Bakugou is showing
"I'm just waiting for someone. Sorry for the inconvenience." I turn to the kids, "Come on, sit in the chairs and wait quietly."
Present Mic is just standing in the middle of us, clearly looking lost, but he brushes it off before walking up to the desk. The desk isn't that far away from each other, so I can hear them greet each other before they start up a conversation. I'd rather listen than stare at the lady who's still in this store. I swear she's the one planning on stealing something. Who stares at the same pair of glasses for twenty minutes?! No one normal, that's who! Though I can't be the one talking about normal, now can I?
"What's the problem?"
"That kid has been a nuisance ever since he walked through the door." Nuisance, nice. I'll add that to the list.
"I know Kaminari is loud at times, but he is no nuisance." I was not expecting Mic to defend me. I know he doesn't hate me, but all teachers hate me so don't blame me for being confused.
"He was yelling, crying, and I couldn't take it." He throws his arms in the air after messing with his hair.
"Crying? What for?" Mic sounds utterly confused and lost. Can't blame the guy, I'm not really known for crying. Quite the opposite really.
"He says he needs to buy glasses." He sighs before letting his head rest in his hands. He looks exhausted. I take back everything I said about you Owen, you probably have like four jobs and a shitty apartment with a shitty roommate who doesn't know how to clean up after themselves or pay rent on time. I have quite the imagination.
"Then let the kid order a pair. I know you hate kids, but just know you're quite young yourself. You shouldn't be so harsh on him." Mic boops his cheek. Literally just pushes his finger right on it. This man astonishes me.
"That's not the problem. It's that he has no guardian with him to sign it. It's as if he wants me fired!"
I haven't thought about that. Damn it, I was thinking of myself and not of others. I'm a minor, I should've known I couldn't get them. You need a parent for that Denki and guess what you got none! Zero. Nada.
Okay I get it.
"No parent came with him?" I can hear the worry laced in his voice and I am not here for it. Mr. Aizawa please tell me you didn't talk to him about that day.
"He said he can't come, that he's away at the moment. I told him to come back with him, but he said he can't wait."
"Seems like he really needs those glasses." Mic is fiddling with the cards that are stacked on the desk. Anyone would assume he's bored with the conversation, but I learned that he just needs something in his hands. Maybe it helps him focus? I haven't figured that part out yet.
"Yeah, those kids he's with were trying to pick out the perfect pair while he was talking to me." He rolls his eyes and if I didn't have half a mind I would've punched him because no one talks about the kids like that.
"Wait. Those glasses aren't for him?" He drops the card that was in his hand and I watch as it quickly drops to the ground.
"I don't think so. I watched as he got them out of the kid section. I think it's for that kid with the blonde hair. He was the one trying them on."
Present Mic turns around, but I move my eyes to something else. I can't let him know I was eavesdropping, so I look at that lady again. Update, I think she works here.
Before I could stare at her any more like the stalker I am, Kai climbs off of his chair and wobbles his way over to me. I stare at him in silence, waiting for him to tell or signal me of something that's wrong, but all he does is stare back. That is until he takes in a shaky breath before his knees buckle and he's falling forward. I wish I could say I was surprised, but I wasn't. So I catch him before his head hits the floor and place him on my lap.
"It's getting really bad now?" I open his hand to see fingernail markings on his palms. Damn.
All he does is shakes his head yes. Meaning he can't form words. All Might, he's not able to talk.
I look over at his brother only to see him fidgeting in his seat. His eyes are looking all over the store, never staying in one place for long, nothing is keeping his attention.
Oh so that's it
I turn to Haru. He's trying to read the signs in the store, but they're too big for him to comprehend. "Haru, could you go over to Toshi for me?", he silently gets up and makes his way over to Kai's previous seat. "Maybe go over some signs while you're at it. He needs to remember them for situations like these. The basics aren't enough." Haru is the quiet one that will always listen and I'm grateful for it, but sometimes he has these smartass moments. Luckily this isn't one of them.
I watch them going over the alphabet before Haru starts pointing at things in the store then signs them. I get distracted for a moment until I feel Kai clenching on my shirt. I put my attention back on him to see that his face is buried in my chest. Even though I can't tell since he's silent with everything he does I know he's crying. The way his shoulders move up and down while he trembles is a give away.
"It's okay Kai, it'll be over soon. Just calm down. Look, your brother is calming down too. You'll be fine, it'll go away." His shaking arms wrap around my neck and he pulls himself closer. I lazily pet his hair in response.
Maybe it's time to go
"Kaminari?" Mic calls to me.
"Yes?" I look up from Kai to see a very annoyed Owen and a cheery Present Mic. This will be interesting.
"Can you get those glasses you picked out?" He points to the kids section and instead of asking him why I just follow his instructions.
"I-uh, sure?" I turn to Sumie. She's playing some kind of hand game with Koji and as always he's losing. Dang, can't even give him a break on his birthday month? "Sumie, can you get the glasses you picked out for Koji?" Her eyes light up before running off to the kids section and coming back with a pair of green rectangle glasses.
"This is the one you wanted right Koji?" I look at him to make sure Sumie actually picked glasses he wanted and not one she liked.
"Yeah, it looks like a dinosaur!" Thankfully it wasn't the latter.
"Okay, thank you." I'm teaching them to be more proper than what they've heard Mr. Akagi say to people and thankfully it wasn't that hard for them. I try to incorporate 'please' and 'thank you' into almost every sentence now, but honestly I forget.
I take the glasses from a way too excited five year old girl before standing up with Kai still in my arms. I walk over to Present Mic and Owen. "I don't understand what's happening here. Did I need to disinfect the glasses? I know they're kids, but I can guarantee you that they don't pick their noses."
"No, we're gonna order your glasses." Present Mic says as if it was the most obvious thing ever heard.
"I- wait we're doing what now?"
"Ordering the glasses. Did he get his check-up?" Mic plucks the glasses from my hand before handing them over to Owen who clicks a few things in his computer before sighing.
"No, I'll go inform the doctor now." Owen pushes his chair out before standing up. He takes a piece of paper that was printed out only seconds ago before walking to some back room.
"I don't understand. I don't have a guardian with me, I can't order them?" I'm just confused. Really confused. Is it because Present Mic is a pro hero?
"Ever since you were accepted into U.A. you've been under our guardianship. We're training the next heroes and some of the things we do are dangerous. Okay let me rephrase that. The majority of what we do is dangerous and you need a legal guardian with you at all times. That's why Aizawa doesn't just leave your class. He's basically your second dad! Don't tell him I said that. But since the teachers are pro heroes, anything could happen to them. So you have a second guardian just in case. Guess who your second is!"
"No way, you're joking."
"I wouldn't kid with you like that!"
"This means I could get the glasses?" I look back at the glasses that sit on Owen's desk.
"Yeah kiddo!" He gives me my signature thumbs up and I could almost cry.
"Thank you so much! I would hug you, but my hands are full." Kai buries his head further into my neck. He's not really used to loud Denki, none of them are. I plan to keep it that way. I don't want them to see how I act in school.
"No worries! If you don't mind me asking, what's wrong with the little one?" He tries to get a look at Kai's face, but he won't let him. I let out a soft chuckle, Kai is one shy kid. I don't think he'll ever get used to Present Mic.
"It's just his quirk, causes a lot of pain if not managed well." I brush it off, but saying it out loud sounds terrible. Especially since he's so young.
"Did you want to head to Recovery Girl?" Mic suggests, but it's a terrible idea. No matter how sweet that lady is.
"No, he'll be fine soon." I start petting his hair again, slower than before since he seems to breathing properly again.
"Kaminari this is serious, if his quirk is causing him pain then he should see a doctor."
I can't
He doesn't like doctors
"No, trust me he'll be fine. This happens frequently."
"This happens a lot?! It could be damaging to his body and mind." Mic's face is serious now and I don't think I've seen it like this before. I want to laugh it off, but I don't think that would make the situation better.
"He's already feeling better. His brother and him have a joined quirk kind of thing? So, this will be over soon." Not as fast as I would want it to be, but it's better than not leaving at all.
"Are you sure?" Mic takes another look at Kai to see if there's anything physically wrong with him, but I'm sure he won't find anything. Kai stopped trembling as soon as I walked over to Mic. He's trying to suppress it like I tell him to around adults, but I hate every second of it.
"I'm positive. Anyways what did you want to talk about?" I'm changing the subject cause that's what I do best in situations I don't like.
"We'll talk about it over some food?"
"Oh, would it be okay if I head to my house first then? It's not far and I can pick up my wallet and maybe drop the kids off too." Drop off the kids with Mr. Akagi. Yeah Denki, that's the best idea you've had all year!
"That's no problem, I'll pay." He waves his hand to act like it's nothing, but it is.
"There's six of us, I can't let you pay for everything." I know I'm not acting like normal ditzy Denki, but I can't let him pay for all of us. It's basically like stealing and from my teacher!
"I know I'm a teacher, but don't forget I'm also a pro hero." That doesn't make it any better because you worked hard for that money, but thank you for the added on guilt.
"I wouldn't! It's just a lot to pay for."
"I don't mind Kaminari. I want to know more about these kids anyways. You never mention them." There is no point in trying anymore, he won't let me talk my way out of this.
"Oh, I guess I don't."
"That's fine, maybe let's start with their names? They might think I'm some stranger!" They do, they really do.
"The one in my hands is Kai, his twin brother that learning sign language is Toshi, the kid with the silverish blue hair, the one teaching him, is Haru, the softer version of Bakugou is Koji, and the girl sitting with him is Sumie."
"That's quite a lot of kids there! Siblings?" It's weird seeing his eyes without his yellow shades. These normal prescription glasses haven't grown on me yet.
"Yeah, something like that." I look away.
"Sorry for the wait, he can come to the back room now." Owen comes back from the room with an older looking guy. He must be the doctor.
"Thank you! And sorry for before." I actually do feel bad since I was risking his job, but he could've at least said something!
"It's no problem, everything is fixed now." His voice is understanding, but his face looks like he wants to kill me. You and me both, Owen.
"Sorry again." I can't help but apologize. "Koji it's time to get your eyes checked!"
"Really?!" He jumps up from his seat and practically runs over to me. I know he already accepted the fact that he wasn't getting them before, but I wasn't giving up. I was ready to do some illegal purchases if I had to. Luckily Present Mic came along and saved me from getting arrested.
"Yeah. Do you need me to go back with you?"
"No, I'm a big boy." He puffs out his chest, but I know he's nervous. I have to let them be independent or they won't ever grow out of their fears.
"Okay then." I watch him hold the doctors hand to the back room. Sumie is trailing behind them, but from a distance. She's very protective of the boys. Dictator, princess, and a mother hen all in one.
"They are adorable, aren't they." Mic turns to me.
"Very."
"Why don't we sit down while we wait, your arms must be tired." He starts walking back to where Haru and Toshi are still practicing.
"I'm fine, but I won't say no to sitting."
Maybe things are getting better
