Auditions

"Ready for auditions today?" Frances asked me.

"As ready as I'll ever be," I replied.

As we discussed what to expect for auditions, Angie ran up to us. "Hey, guys," she said.

"Hi Angie," Frances said.

"You look tired," I observed, "how long did you sleep?"

"Four hours," she said.

"Four hours!" I yelled, "you need to sleep! It's important!" (Something like this actually happened with me this year. I'm not going to say who yelled at me and told me to sleep because I don't to get killed again.)

At this point a bunch of people turned to look at us. "Oh look," Mildred commented, "the bitch is trying to sleep with another Hamilton."

Frances looked about ready to explode at Mildred. However, Angie stayed oblivious and counted was counting on her fingers. She looked up, "oh," she said, "it was seven, I can't count."

I frowned, "okay, that's still not enough though. You need to sleep at least twelve hours a day."

"But I have to study," she complained.

I frowned, ready to argue with her when Frances nudged me, "at least she's studying, not sneaking out."

"Okay," I said.

"Let's go to auditions!" Angie said.

"I thought you weren't excited about trying out," Frances comented.

"I wasn't," admitted Angie, "but then I read the script and I loved it!"

"Who do you want to be?" I asked her.

"Grace," Angie said, "what about you two."

"I want to be Pepper," said Frances, "she's badass."

"I want to be Annie," I said, "I know most people want to but I still want to try."

"At least we won't be trying to compete against each other for roles," Angie pointed out.

"Yeah," I agreed.

When we walked into the theater, Mr. Washington was already there. "Hello students," he said, "today we have auditions for our school musical, Annie Jr. First you are going to have to sing a song for the part you want. We'll go down the list. You can only audition for one person but we may cast you as someone else."

Most people nodded in understanding.

"Good," He said, "everyone who wants to be Annie please raise their hand." I raised my hand with about five other girls.

"Okay," Mr. Washington said, "what are your names?"

"Anne Lee."

"Mary Seabury."

"Marie de Lafayette."

"Alexa Branum."

"Abigail Seabury."

"Susan Reynolds." I heard a few snickers at my name, as if just being a Reynolds was something funny.

"So I'm going to have you all sing Maybe," said Mr. Washington. "Anne, can you please start?"

Anne managed to sing through most of it but at the very end of the song her voice went up high instead of lower. She was probably going to be cast though, she only made one mistake.

"Mary?"

Mary was very squeaky. She was high the whole time and only stayed on one note.

"Marie?"

I zoned out from until I heard my name called.

"Susan?"

I stood up and started to sing "maybe far away, or maybe real nearby." I heard a couple people gasp. I wasn't that good, I don't take special lessons like other people do.

After I sang, I returned to my seat and was greeted by Frances and Angie. "That was amazing!" Angie said, "I could never sing like that."

"I wasn't that good," I protested.

Frances snorted, "bullshit," she said, "you were amazing!"

I blushed, "Thanks," I muttered.

"People who want to be a different orphan!" Mr. Washington called out. Frances raised her hand along with a couple other people. I zoned out most people until it was Frances's turn.

"Frances?"

"It's a hard knock life for us, it's a hard knock life for us," she sang.

After her audition she sat down next to us. "You're definitely going to get Pepper," I told her.

"And you're definitely going to get Annie."

"People trying out for Grace," Mr. Washington called.  Angie raised her hand along with Theo Burr, one of the best actresses in the school and Philip's girlfriend.

"Good luck," I whispered.

"Thanks."

"Theo?" Mr. Washington called.

Theo's singing was perfect and on point.  Angie's my friend but I don't think that she'll get the role.

"Angie?"

Angie's singing was good, but definitely not as good as Theo's. I hoped that she'd still get a good role if she didn't get Grace.

"Good job," I said when Angie came back to sit by us.

"Thanks," she whispered.

I zoned out for the rest of auditions, hoping I would get the role of Annie. And hoping that my friends would get the roles they wanted.

"Hey," Frances said, bringing her out of her thoughts, "auditions are over."

"Okay," I said, "Thanks." I stood up.

"How do you think you did?" Asked Angie.

"Fine," I grunted, "I'm probably not gonna get the role though."

"Lies," Frances said, "you were even better than Theo."

I laughed, "no one's better than Theo."

"That's true," said Angie.

"Well, I have to go home," I said, scared for what I would find.

"Are you sure you'll be okay?" Angie Asked.

I nodded. "Wait, is your home safe?" Asked Frances.

"Yeah," I said, "it's fine."

Angie gave me a look but stayed quiet. "Okay, bye!" I screamed running in the direction of my house.
