He's Not Like Himself

The rest of Izuku's day passed in relative peace aside from the occasional teasing his friends subjected him to. But, that was to be expected. After all, you don't just get caught kissing in Heights' Alliance to not have people ridicule you for it for days after the fact. That was how Kaminari and Jiro got found out, they had been kissing (more passionately than Izuku and Katsuki) in the stairwell and Tokoyami had had the displeasure of walking in on the scene with Koda accompanying him. Really, Kaminari and Jiro should have been glad that one of their more chatty peers didn't walk in on them, the rest of the class only found out because Uraraka overheard Tokoyami mentioning the incident to Shoji.

"So what was it like?" Uraraka teased Izuku, "Were you so overcome with passion that you simply couldn't bear t-"

Izuku slapped a hand over Uraraka's mouth, his face was burning red as he tried his best not to lose control of his quirk due to sheer embarrassment, "Please, Ochako, you're making everything out to be a bigger deal than it actually is." Izuku whispered harshly. Izuku's tone of voice didn't stop his friends from laughing, though. They chortled and chuckled at his expense, revelling in his awkward distress.

In an odd sense, Izuku was grateful for the distraction of his and Katsuki's kiss being the talk of the class. Whilst there was still more attention on him than he was comfortable with, at least it was for something as stupid as an innocent kiss and not the bizarre series of events that had been unfolding over the last few months.

In all honesty, Izuku couldn't deal with any of that at the moment. He didn't want to think of his expulsion, it brought him too much pain. He didn't want to think of the destruction of his childhood home (most likely by the League's hand) and the consequential hospitalisation of his mother, it only stabbed his heart with anguish. He didn't want to think of his three-month-long kidnapping, it was too ambigus. He didn't want to think about his reinstation, it was simply baffling. Izuku didn't want to reflect on any of the events that had occurred over the past months (well, he wouldn't mind dwelling on his first 'I love you' to Katsuki and his first kiss with his boyfriend, but they existed in a realm of their own).

"Stop teasing him, Ochako," Tsu chuckled, "If he turns any more red then I'm afraid we might lose him."

"He could get stuck with a permanently red face." Todoroki deadpanned. It was hard to tell when he was joking, he so rarely had any sort of inflexion in his voice. Izuku was sure he was joking this time, though, there was a slight curve to his lips that hinted at his attempt as a good-natured jest.

The relentless teasing continued on throughout lunch, even Iida chimed in at one point with a rather humorous comment of his own. Izuku knew that he would sound like a broken record if he were to ever voice all of his thoughts aloud, but he truly did feel like he was where he was meant to be. He was with people that loved him and would do anything for him. He was with his family.

Afternoon classes that day were less about the practicalities of being a hero, and more about staying on the right side of the media. It was a class led by Present Mic, after all, their homeroom teacher wasn't exactly an expert when it came to dealing with the media given his style of hero work.

Izuku was completely absorbed in the lesson. He listened intently to every word that passed Present Mic's mouth, he hung on to every syllable and scribbled notes at an erratic rate into his notebook. He had to make up for the near four months of content he had missed.

He could practically see Katsuki roll his eyes at him, despite the fact that Katsuki was sitting in front of him, facing resolutely towards the board. It was par for the course for Katsuki to become exasperated by Izuku's frantic scribbling. Yes, Izuku was with his family.

"Before you leave, I need to talk to you, Midoriya," Aizawa called across the classroom, over the noise of chairs scraping the floor and excited teenage voices discussing their plans for the evening.

Izuku nodded towards his teacher in acknowledgement of his words before turning back to Katsuki.

"Come to my room after you're done talking to Aizawa, got it, nerd?" Katsuki grumbled quietly. He didn't want their classmates to hear him, lest they conjure up their own ideas about what they were planning to do. What they were actually planning to do was study, Katsuki was going to help catch Izuku up on everything he had missed, but Izuku doubted that was what his classmates would think.

"Of course, Kacchan. This probably won't take long anyway," Izuku smiled minutely at his boyfriend. He was acting much the same as he did before this entire debacle with him being kidnapped, but there was less light in his eyes, and his smile wasn't as wide and beaming.

Covertly, Katsuki hooked his pinky finger with Izuku's and ruffled his verdant curls, "Don't take too long, we've got a lot of stuff to cover."

If Izuku's smile grew larger and his eyes shone brighter at the feeling of Katsuki's finger hooking his, nobody but the two of them needed to know about it. It was a private moment between the two of them. A private moment that was soon interrupted by Kirishima bounding over like an excitable puppy, an easy-going grin on his face.

"Hey bro, do you wanna walk back with us? We promise we won't tease you... too much," Kirishima said cheekily.

With a roll of his eyes and an exaggerated huff, Katsuki unlinked his pinky from Izuku's and started marching towards the classroom door, a sign of his unwilling agreement to Kirishima's suggestion. Kirishima, Sero, Kaminari and Ashido all bounced after him with teasing remarks on the tips of their tongues, ready to dodge when Katsuki inevitably swung at them for their incessant teasing.

Left alone with Aizawa, Izuku shuffled over to the teacher's podium.

"I'll cut right to the chase, Midoriya," Aizawa started, "Your mother woke up from her coma today. She'll live, the doctors are certain of that, but she's not in any condition to leave the hospital. She's been unresponsive to even high-level healing quirks, her wounds sometimes even open up on their own. The doctors think there might be some sort of quirk at play. In the meantime, she's remaining in the hospital for the foreseeable future."

The dump of information about Izuku's mum's state was rather overwhelming. All the same, Izuku tried to articulate a response to his teacher's words. "Oh... Um... Can I go and see her?" Izuku asked somewhat nervously.

"Of course you can, Problem Child, we're not gonna keep you from your mother. But you'll have to wait a few days, we can't let you leave the campus without a teacher supervising you now and nobody is free until Thursday." Aizawa explained.

Considering it was Monday, Izuku didn't mind too much, though he knew the prospect of visiting his mum would play on his mind for the next few days.

"That's fine, thank you." Izuku thanked his teacher before taking his leave. He hurried back to Heights' Alliance, eager to share his news with his boyfriend and the rest of his friends.

However, as Izuku rushed eagerly towards his friends, his vision began to blur and darken around the edges. He hardly had time to comprehend what was happening before the world when dark and he lost control of his body.

Katsuki lay, sprawled on his bed, waiting for Izuku to arrive so that they could start going over all of the content he had missed. Katsuki would be lying if he said that he wasn't looking forwards to spending some alone time with Izuku, even if that time was only spent studying. Any time spent with Izuku set Katsuki's heart fluttering and nerves racing. If anyone accused Katsuki of being a sap, he would beat their ass there and then, but he privately held the belief that he was rather sappy when it came to Izuku. And who wouldn't be? It was a delight to spend even a second in his usually bubbly presence, he had a way of reassuring people without saying a word. It was one of the many things that Katsuki loved and adored about his boyfriend, not that he would ever say that to his face.

As caught up in his traitorous thoughts as he was, Katsuki still had some semblance of the passage of time. It shouldn't have taken Izuku forty minutes to talk to Aizawa. Given everything that has happened, Katsuki thought that he was well within his rights to jump up from his bed, panic coursing through his body, and make a mad dash towards the door. Izuku had dreadful luck, Katsuki truly wouldn't put him past him to somehow end up fighting off three villains in the middle of UA's campus. He was a villain magnet if Katsuki had ever seen one.

Luckily for Katsuki's poor heart, before he could reach the door, a bemused looking Izuku shuffled through with a hazy look to his eyes.

"There you are, nerd!" Katsuki huffed angrily, he tried to cover his concern, though he wasn't sure how successful he was. "It's been forty minutes, what took you so long? I was starting to think that you had been kidnapped again."

"Sorry, Kacchan," Izuku muttered, "I was on my way back to the dorms and my vision went funny. I guess I passed out or somehow lost consciousness for a second. I'm not sure. Anyway, I'm here now! Everything's fine!"

If Izuku was expecting his words to not concern Katsuki, he was deeply mistaken. Who wouldn't be mistaken after finding out that one of their closest friends (and partner) had just blacked out whilst walking a short distance? Izuku had said it was only for a second, but Katsuki doubted that. His talk with Aizawa had couldn't have lasted more than ten minutes, their teacher was very concise and straight to the point, and it took five minutes to walk from UA's main building to the dorms, so that left twenty-five minutes unaccounted for. It simply didn't add up.

"I don't think everything is fine, Izuku. You should go to Recovery Girl's office." Katsuki suggested in a calmer tone of voice than usual. It was far from soothing and gentle, it was almost as if Katsuki was physically unable to achieve such tones.

"What? No, I said I'm fine, Kacchan. It's probably nothing. If it happens again, I'll go to Recovery Girl, I promise." Izuku gently took Katsuki's hands into his own and gave them a reassuring squeeze.

Katsuki didn't want to relent, but when it came to Izuku he was a weak man. That, and the fact that Izuku was so ridiculously stubborn that even if Katsuki had pressed further, Izuku would have simply put up a fight, which would only devolve into them arguing and then making up an hour or so later. This was simply the calmest and easiest route to tread, though Katsuki was going to be keeping a close eye on Izuku.

"Fine. But you better tell me if it happens again, otherwise, I'll beat your ass and drag you to Recovery Girl myself." Katsuki threatened.

Izuku's laughter rang like church bells through the room, "OK, Kacchan. I'll tell you if it happens again." The promise was sincere and heartfelt, Katsuki trusted Izuku to abide by it.

"Alright then. Enough of this sappy shit, sit down and pull out your books." Katsuki huffed. He pulled Izuku over to the low table in the middle of the room and dragged him to the floor.

His worry for Izuku hadn't diminished entirely, how could it? It had simply been moved to the back of his mind, it took up residence in the part of his mind that all Izuku related things did. Facts he could recall almost unconsciously as well and some of Izuku's most stunning features that he liked to think about when he was feeling particularly lovesick. Katsuki would like to say that he hated how he had become such a lovesick fool, and he did hate it, but only to a certain extent.

They were halfway through their homework when Izuku suddenly perked up, having remembered what he originally wanted to tell Katsuki.

"Oh, Kacchan, I forgot to tell you something." Izuku started, "The reason Aizawa wanted to speak with me was to tell me that my mum has woken up from her coma, isn't that great!"

Izuku watched as Katsuki smiled (ever so minutely) at him, "Yeah, that's great, nerd. When can you go and see her?"

"Aizawa said that I'll probably have to wait until Thursday since I need a teacher to escort me there and back. Especially given... well, everything that's happened." Izuku finished with an awkward chuckled.

"Alright, do you want to go on your own?" Katsuki asked.

"Mm, yeah, maybe. I'd love to have you there, but... I just want to be with her alone since I haven't seen her in so long." Izuku hummed. Rather suddenly, Izuku's placid facial expression turned stricken.

"Oh my gosh, Kacchan! I haven't seen my mum in months!" Izuku gasped loudly, "And she's been in a coma! She doesn't know that I was... taken! Oh my gosh! Kacchan!" Izuku wailed loudly.

"Calm down, nerd," Katsuki placated to the best of his ability (that's to say, he placated very poorly), he laid a hand on Izuku's back and rubbed it in a comforting fashion. "The nurses, or maybe even one of the teachers, are probably gonna explain what's been happening over the past few months. Don't stress out, just go to the hospital and see your mum, that's all you need to worry about."

Slowly, Izuku's uneven breathing and panic began to level out. Despite Katsuki being absolutely abhorrent at helping people calm down, just him being beside Izuku was enough to relieve him of some of his stress.

"You're right, thanks, Kacchan," Izuku whispered after taking several calming breaths.

After a few more minutes, in which Izuku regained some of his composure, the two boys resumed their homework, the air was far more charged than it previously had been. A sense of joy tinged with slight panic hovered above them.

Dinner that evening was practically dedicated to teasing Izuku and Katsuki, with more efforts being put towards getting Izuku's face to glow ruby. After Katsuki had screamed bloody murder at Ashido and Sero for annoying him for the thirteenth time that day, everybody's efforts had been directed towards torturing Izuku.

"It's really not that big of a deal, guys, couples kiss all the time..." Izuku muttered nervously into his plate.

"Yeah, but not everyone gets caught, dude!" Kaminari chortled. he, along with several other members of the class, had been in a perpetual state of laughter for the entire duration of dinner so far. Katsuki was nearing the end of his rope and Izuku was due to pass out because of the sheer embarrassment he was being subjected to.

"Well, no, but I think we've joked about it enough, now. We didn't tease you and Jiro this much when you were caught in the stairwell." Izuku argued.

"He does have a point, dear," Yaoyorozu agreed as she laid a hand on her boyfriend's arm, "You should stop teasing Midoriya, it's getting to be a bit much now. Besides, you and Kyoka were worse than Midoriya and Bakugo, so you don't really have a leg to stand on."

Izuku couldn't be more thankful for the class' vice president if he tried. He wasn't sure if she had picked up on his blatant discomfort or if she herself was simply tired of the 'joke', but he was thankful, nonetheless. Also, he was sure that if Yaoyorozu didn't speak up soon, Katsuki was going to jump across the table and throttle Kaminari, just like he had promised to do if he didn't stop annoying him.

Finally, after Yaoyorozu spoke up, the teasing abated and Izuku could breathe a sigh of relief. The topic of conversation shifted away from Izuku and Katsuki and towards more mundane topics, like the difficulty of that week's homework and what was going on in the TV show the class had decided to watch together.

This was the sense of normality that Izuku craved. he didn't want anyone mentioning his pro-longed absence from UA. He didn't want anyone to mention his kidnapping. And he didn't want anyone to make a big deal out of his and Kacchan's relationship. It wasn't like their outward behaviour would change much, certainly not after the relentless teasing they had been subjected to throughout the day. What Izuku wanted was for everything to be exactly as it had been before he was forced away from UA, of course, it wasn't a realistic fantasy. It's impossible to ignore the fact that Izuku had been missing for four months. It was impossible to miss his dimmed eyes and the new scars that crisis crossed his back and peeked up above his shirt collar, they stood out, pink, against his pale skin. But nobody wanted to bring them up, nobody wanted to mention them. They implied something that nobody wanted to think about. So everyone stayed silent. Everyone pretended as if nothing had happened, and that was all Izuku wanted.

That night, with Katsuki curled around his body and a warm feeling in his heart, Izuku scrolled through his phone. He had only just retrieved it from the draw that Katsuki had been keeping it in for the past three months.

"What are you looking for, nerd, I doubt you missed anything interesting?" Katsuki grumbled into the back of Izuku's neck.

"I've missed plenty, Kacchan." Izuku replied, "I have loads of comments on my quirk based blog asking where I am, so I have to reply otherwise they'll think I'm dead. Also, my favourite analyst has posted ten new videos, each an hour-long, that I need to catch up on. Also, the people who read my fan-" Izuku could have rambled on forever, but Katsuki's hand clamped over his mouth to muffle his voice.

"Alright, alright, I get it. You have a lot to do." Katsuki grumbled, "Just hurry up and do it so that I can go to sleep without that shitty light in my eyes. And don't forget to delete all of the random shit that's inevitably gonna be in your camera roll from the class group chat."

"Oh, you're right. I completely forgot that that app automatically downloads media," Izuku chuckled as he exited his blog and clicked on his phone's gallery, "Did Sero and Todoroki have a meme war again-" Izuku's voice trailed off slowly.

"Yeah, they were fucking annoying about it as well!" Katsuki huffed, not noticing the wide-eyed look on Izuku's face.

"Kacchan..." Izuku whispered almost inaudible.

"What is it, nerd?" Katsuki said in an exasperated tone, all he wanted was to go to sleep, the day had been tiring.

"Did...Umm...I need to talk to Aizawa and All Might! Now!" Izuku yelped. He leapt from the bed and started making his way towards the door in nothing but his boxers and a white t-shirt with hiragana spelling out 'pyjama top.

"What the fuck!" Katsuki shouted, "Why are you rushing out of the door all of a sudden?" He rolled off of his bed and followed after Izuku.

"I have to talk to them! I'm such an idiot! How could I forget?" Izuku cried.

Katsuki sped after his boyfriend, when he finally managed to catch up, he pulledIzuku to a stop by his elbow and looked him directly into his suddenly intense eyes.

"What do you mean?" Katsuki asked.

"They're going to attack in three months! I showed Aizawa the pictures when I came back after leaving, but I just remember something about it. I need to talk to them and make sure that they have a plan!" Izuku yelled, retching his arm from Katsuki's grip.

"Who? Who's going to attack?" Katsuki asked, but he already knew the answer. Who else could it be but...

"The League of Villains."

So, apparently, I just forgot to post this chapter on the first? I'm so confused because I was sure I did because this chapter is posted on AO3...Anyway, I'll post this now, and there will be a chapter tomorrow. So sorry about that.

Anyway, thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are.
