The Sword of Li
by Angelica S. Cabangon
Yu Jinli, the son of a concubine with a frail constitution, was considered an ill omen according to monk's astrology, earning him the unfortunate label of a disaster. From birth until the age of 10, he lived on the fringes of his household, gradually becoming the target of his cousins' ridicule and abuse.
One day, while fetching water from the river, Yu Jinli's cousins pushed him in, subjecting him to the dangerous current. His life took an unexpected turn when Old Han, wandering Mount Xueshen, discovered him. Old Han recognized the poison "Fuzi" in his body and realized the young boy could still be saved.
Six years later, Yu Jinli transformed from a fragile, malnourished boy into a sturdy and handsome young man under Old Han's guidance. Determined to uncover the truth about his mother's mysterious sickness, Yu Jinli and Old Han sneaked into his family home, only to find it abandoned and his mother dead.
Training under Old Han, a retired general, Yu Jinli rose through the ranks in the military camp, earning the name Sword Li of the Yang Military Garrison for his fierce kung fu skills. In battles, he became renowned among soldiers and nobles alike, bringing pride to his mentor.
During a holiday granted by the Garrison Commander, Yu Jinli encountered Lu Chu Hua, a young lady from the famous Lu Family. Their acquaintance blossomed into a deep connection, and as their love grew, Lu Chuhua became a source of comfort for Yu Jinli, helping him overcome his painful past.
As the emperor initiated conquests across vast lands, Yu Jinli accepted the orders, viewing it as an opportunity to seek revenge for his mother and propose to Lu Chu Hua. Successfully conquering three nations and defeating enemies, he presented his achievements to the emperor.
Impressed, the emperor granted Yu Jinli the title Marquis of Yongwu (Military Might) and the chance to make three wishes. His wishes were to marry Lu Chu Hua, seek justice for his mother, and reveal his true identity as Yu Jinli.
Upon learning the truth, the emperor was enraged and demoted the head of the Yu Household and those involved. Yu Jinli chose not to make a third wish, leaving the emperor to decide the fate of his biological father. Yu Jinli married Lu Chu Hua, and they lived happily ever after.
