*Author's note*
I apologise in advance that this was meant to be set in August 1982 but Queen hadn't yet reached Japan on their tour (they were still in the US leg according to my Queen book), so as someone as Queeky as me who likes to work around the timeline of the band as much as possible I regret to inform you that this is a slight altercation of history. It may not bother you so much but it bothers me personally. And in the future there may be a few more historical inaccuracies to come for the sake of this fic... but not as awful or drastic as the movie was, I promise you!
Regardless, thanks for being loyal and I hope you enjoy this update
Park Hyatt hotel, Tokyo
"Disneyland?!"
"Keep your voice down, I want to keep it a surprise or else they'll be restless on the journey there" she hissed, glancing at Johnny and Roshni scrambling around the hotel suite in only their underwear.
"The oldest country in the world and that is all you can think of?" He shook his head as he went to their hotel bed.
"Well, it's newly opened! And there are too many things to do here, it's the only thing at the top of my head that I can think of" Monica scrunched the mousse into her hair.
"We took them to the one in LA, didn't we?" Freddie frustratedly threw clothes onto the mattress as he rummaged through his suitcase.
"That was when they were seven months old, they're never going to remember that!" She argued.
"I don't see why you can't give them a taste of the culture and take them to a shrine or a Bunraku puppet show or something... and where in the fuck did that t shirt and my shaving cream go?!"
"Which shirt?"
"The yellow Ralph Lauren one, like you asked over the phone"
"I don't bloody see it!"
"I did pack them for you!" She insisted.
"I know, I saw them last night when I opened it but they've vanished!"
"Don't change the subject," she went to the bed were he was, lowering her eyes at him. "Do you really think I'd let those two loose in a Shinto temple? They'd only disturb the peace!"
"They're disturbing our peace" he wanted to say, then he turned his head to see where they were.
He realised quickly that they were no longer running around the master suite, and that he could hear giggles coming from the bathroom.
Before Monica could intervene, the desk telephone rang.
She quickly picked it up, "Hello?"
"Misa Watanabe on line for Alfred Mason?" The Japanese operator said in broken English.
"Yes, he's here. This is his-his partner speaking."
She had to stop herself from saying wife and not fiancé, once again the fact that Freddie had not acknowledged their plans of marriage in a long time.
"Ohayōgozaimasu! Freddie?" Misa's familiar voiced sounded on the other end.
"Misa, ohayōgozaimasu! This is Monica!" She customarily replied with little of the vocabulary Freddie taught her, putting her finger in her other ear to drown out the commotion in the background.
"Ahhhh!" She cooed in the other end. "How did you sleep well?"
"We did, but the children are restless now though" she giggled slightly, trying to speak clearly enough so that Misa could understand her accented English.
"Very good, is Freddie with you?"
"Yes, do you need him now? We just ordered breakfast from room service."
"If you please, I like to speak with him. Jim alerted me that the music news station needs him earlier than we expected." She responded.
"Oh, of course. He's tied up right this minute but I will tell him..." she trailed off as she saw the twins provoking Freddie and running across the bathroom suite in the mirror.
Johnny giggled, waving a familiar yellow garment above his head as Roshni wore a foamy white beard on her face with a can of Gillette in her hand, followed by Freddie grumbling and cussing in irritation as he chased after them in only a pair of underpants.
"So that's where they went" Monica sighed at her reflection, for aside from an empty stomach she was the only one in the family fully dressed and ready to head out the door.
"Freddie?! Misa for you!" She called out.
"She's early!" He made a grab for Johnny, but failed.
"She says it's important!" She looked back pleadingly.
He huffed, and made his way towards the phone.
She handed it over cautiously, for the angry look on his face wasn't a pleasant one.
"Ohayōgozaimasu! Ogenkidesuka?" the words flowed off his tongue, then he pointed at the bathroom in order for her to intervene.
"Well excuse you, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed," she muttered, to which he ignored her, then rushed to the scene, clapping her hands, "Settle down, you two!"
"Look mummy, she's Santa!" Johnny squealed, jumping up and down and pointing at his sister.
She shushed him as she pulled the slider doors across, then bent down to their level, "When Phoebe gets back from the shop we all need to go downstairs right after breakfast and meet that nice lady Misa who we met at the airport last night."
"But I wanna play here!" Roshni pouted stubbornly.
"I'm going to take you both somewhere fun today" she gently pried the can of shaving cream from her small hands and put it up on the towel rack out of her daughter's reach.
"Where?" They quipped.
"It's a surprise. So you better be good, because daddy is not in a very good mood today," she took the yellow shirt from Johnny with ease and started folding it up neatly in her hands. "So, will you two be on your best behaviour until we get outside?"
They thought for a moment about what their mother just asked them, then nodded reluctantly.
She smiled and lifted the hand towel off the rack and started wiping the foam off of Roshni's face, "Good. Now it's time for you both to get dressed."
She took them by the hand and led them out.
"Alright, see you in about half an hour, Misa... yes, domo arigato. Sayonara." Freddie hung up, then let out a yawn as he rubbed his head.
"Do you have time to help me dress them seeing as Phoebe isn't back yet?" Monica asked as she led them to their bedroom.
"Yes, alright" he mumbled, storming after.
This was mainly a business trip rather than a leisure one, which made it all the more stressful even though she knew he was in his favourite country. But his cranky attitude just because he'd have no time for shopping sprees was beginning to put Monica on edge.
"I want to wear the princess gown!" Roshni picked up the pink blossom patterned kimono-like dressing gown that her daddy had given her as a present the night before.
"That's for going over your pyjamas at night, you'll be cold" she took the 'princess gown' from her daughter and went to the wardrobe to get a clothes hanger for it.
"But I want it!" She pleaded.
"I packed your favourite clothes for you, you can wear it when we come back from dinner tonight" Monica smiled and lifted her smocked dress out from their designated suitcase, and Roshni's mind was quickly changed.
"You two are going to have to wear a uniform when you start going to school" she heard Freddie murmur behind her as she pulled the dress over her daughter's head.
"Oh yes... that" Monica was anxious as the time looked closer and closer. When they got home from Japan she knew it was time to start looking for jobs, and Freddie would be whisked back in the studio looking for new song ideas.
"I want you both to thank Misa for the beautiful presents she got for you both, what we say to say thank you here is arigato, alright?" Freddie continued as he helped Johnny step into his green dungarees.
"You hear that, you two?" She pressed, and they repeated it in unison, "Arigato"
Freddie chuckled slightly, and then picked them up, "Oh, you two make me proud."
"Well, look who's lightened up a bit!" Monica crossed her arms, to which Freddie simply rolled his eyes before tenderly nuzzling them both.
"He can be a grump... but a loving grump" she thought as she watched them giggling in his hold.
He kissed their heads and set them back onto the carpet, "Now run off and get your shoes sitting at the front door"
Monica smiled a little, now that harmony was seemingly restored.
She made herself busy and picked her pyjamas up off the floor. Watching as he lifted a blouse with botanical fabric from his suitcase, much like he always wore ever since he knew her.
"You're not wearing that woman's shirt all day today, are you?" She folded her pyjamas and slipped them under her pillow. "It's too loose at the top. You have no boobs to fill it out."
"Well, can I borrow these ones then?" He slipped grinned and behind her, cupping her breasts.
"Hey!" She pried his hands off as he laughed.
"I still don't know where my yellow shirt went" he released her.
She straightened up her jacket, "I set it up high on the towel rack where Johnny couldn't reach it"
"Oh, well, thank you my dear" he muttered, then leaned in to kiss her.
"The first kiss of the day" her heart warmed, watching as he rushed into the bathroom.
A pair of footsteps sounded, and she was pulled back into her life, "Mummy!!"
She turned to them, "You got them?" and they held their lace-ups in their hands.
"Ladies first," she pulled Roshni up onto the bed. "You're both going to learn how to tie when you go to school as well."
"Will you come too?" Johnny grabbed his mother's forearm.
She saw so much of his father in his beady brown eyes, especially in the pictures that Jer has shown her in the past.
She ruffled his hair, and continued tying a bow on her daughter's shoe, "Mummy's too old to go to school I'm afraid."
"Can I wear my princess gown to school as well?" Roshni kicked her feet once her mother was finished.
"No, you'll have to wear the same clothes as all the other children" Monica lifted her down.
"All the other children, my god..." Freddie thought sadly as he rinsed his razor in the bathroom sink, listening in on their conversation. "They'll have to conform for once... but ah well, at least they'll turn into obedient little shits and they will be out of my hair for as long as necessary for the next fourteen years"
He'd wished that Queen were scheduled to go on tour when the blossoms were in season for them all to see.
"But that's life... it can't be perfect" he remembered Phoebe telling him a while back at the hospital when little Johnny broke his leg that not everything, not even the most minor details, could go as one wished.
"But what an imperfectly perfect four and a half years it has been with them... six or so if you count her..." he watched through the doorway as he pat his face dry, for Phoebe was now in her bedroom upon returning and rummaging through his plastic bag of groceries.
He watched as his assistant pulled what looked like the small box of cigarettes he requested himself.
"Well, thank fuck," he dropped the towel and rushed to the rest of them. "You found some!"
"Just about. I'm not sure that they were the brand you liked last time we were here" Phoebe fidgeted anxiously.
The man shrugged, peeling the plastic film off, "Well, we will get through them and see."
"Please go do it by the window. You know I don't like you smoking near them" Monica nagged as she followed Phoebe across the suite.
"Well that's one thing that's changed, Monica's ferocity. She used to be a quiet little thing who wouldn't dare cross my path" he huffed and went to the large walled sheet of glass, looking across the overpopulous city.
"You know, when we were in Germany he screamed at the audience to shut up" Phoebe murmured to her upon being told that she found he was being cranky as he unloaded the shopping bag.
"I don't understand what his problem is," She whispered. "The kids and I were looking forward to meeting him here."
"He wanted your first time in Japan to be more special. This country means a lot to him," He explained. "It's where he and the boys first realised that they were doing something right with their passion for once"
"He never told me that... all he goes on is about how beautiful it is" she murmured, looking at her feet.
"He told me that after a few shots of Sake," Phoebe giggled. "But he also told me that he's doubtful he's not making the best of his time with his family before they start school and you get a job again... he's scared of going downhill and losing everything like every other rock star, especially after the ratings Hot Space got"
"Oh, my Freddie..." she stood up against the sideboard.
"What do we tell him about the deformed koi?" Phoebe suddenly changed the subject after a moments' silence.
"Oh no, not that" she thought with dread.
"What deformed koi?" Freddie interrupted, strolling in as he buttoned up his trousers with the intent of finding his lighter.
"Oh fuck" she watched as Phoebe turned pale.
"Phoebe?" He put his hands on his hips sternly.
Monica swallowed, "One morning when you were still asleep Phoebe and I were checking on the filter in the koi pond after it got fixed"
"Was it running smoothly?" Freddie asked hopeful.
"Yes... But, one of them wasn't swimming well and was... well, it was slightly inbred." She continued to explain.
"So then what?" He crossed his arms.
"We didn't know what to do so we-I killed it with a hammer" Phoebe cut in.
"Phoebe, you fucking savage!" The man snapped.
Monica came to his defence, "We didn't know what to do and we wanted to keep it out of the way of the children-"
"When we got home we're calling the fish man and finding a more humane way of dealing with it!" He rummaged through his assistant's bag. "Now where is my lighter?"
"I can't put up with this" Monica thought, then she went to the doorway. "Kids, get your things, I'm taking you out for breakfast!"
"I thought we were having breakfast here!" Freddie argued as they ran in.
She picked her hand bag up off the cubic armchair, "Well, clearly things are too hectic for you around here, so if we're that much of an inconvenience we will keep out of your way."
"Well, have you got enough yen to get you around the city?" He watched as his assistant put the twins in their coats, for the sky was cloudy outside.
"Yes, Freddie. I've got enough yen," she slipped her key card into her pocket. "I'll see you at the..." she paused for she couldn't pronounce the name of the restaurant they arranged to meet at. "Whatever, I have the address but I can't be bothered, we will see you at 7"
He watched as she grabbed Johnny and Roshni's hands and rushed out the door.
"She wouldn't even let me give them a proper goodbye."
