||Personality||
Melchior was born with a silver spoon at his lips, maids attending his every need. It is no stretch to claim is is rather spoiled, used to being waited on hand and foot. Even worse, he is used to getting his way in any situation. A rejection, a flat out no, is something rather new and challenging for him. His reaction will be one of shock, of surprise at the audacity to deny him anything. Such does not happen, and it makes him extremely uneasy to deal with. However, he won't be angry. Melchior may be spoiled, rather naive in that sense, but he is no monster. Anger, unnecessary cruelty is a rather savage trait, something he refused to take part in. Even better, he looks down on those who do. Especially those that simply punch down on those below them, for nothing but their own amusement. It is rather pathetic, nothing is gained from it except endless suffering. Oh no, he finds it absolutely disgusting, and voices this thought quite clearly. That is another thing about Melchior, he does shy away from announcing his opinion. It is perhaps this persistence of speaking his mind that earned him is spot. Do not be mistaken, he is not snappy or sassy. His word are not uncontrolled by annoyance and fear. Quite the opposite, he is completely in control of his argument. It is exactly that which makes him suitable to speak his mind. If he disagrees, he will mention so. Even within those above him, those with more power, higher status. He will not be disrespectful, there is no need for such pettiness, but he will not shy away from the conversation. Speaking your mind, granted it is logical and respectful, will never be harmful. At least, that is how Melchior feels, within is privileged position.
Melchior may seem a rather good person; respectful, empathetic and not afraid to speak his mind. Unfortunately, this is not the entire picture. Melchior would be best considered neutral rather than positive. He has been raised within a position of privilege and that is noticeable. He is rather unmoved by the suffering of those below him. He will not partake in it, and he will speak but when he considers it unnecessary, but he will not intervene. He has been taught such things are part of life, and the world simply works in such ways. Melchior truly believes that, believes that everyone has a position in the world, and trying to change that is useless. He is truly removed from empathy below them, as long as he cannot gain anything from it. After all, Melchior has been raised within the elites, the pureblood. Within the world of never ending power struggles. He may not help those without power simply to be a good person, but he will help them if he gets something in return. That is Melchior's reputation, that of a deal-maker. That is is real face, a cunningness to gain from the suffering of others. He is known for it, for his deals with those less fortunate than him. Sometimes even those more fortunate, who simply need a favour. He helps them, does them a favour, and they owe him. They works for him now, they almost belong to him. It is so how his influence grew, a network of those indebted to him. And one thing is for sure, he may help you but the cost will always be greater than the help. For some it does not matter, as Melchior will not intentionally sabotage those he has helped, but he will request a favour back in at least equal size.
||Background||
Melchior was born within the high ranks of Varox. His father, Duke Strat Nyreas, ruled over a decent sized province, close to the heart of Varox. The Nyreas family has been influential within Varox for the majority of it existence. There are almost no records of the family not holding a strong position of power. They have deeply rooted themselves within Varox aristocracy, often marrying within other great houses. Some say Nyreas blood is seated within every great house. How can they be this successful? How is it that their house has not be crushed by the political games, as so many have. Simple, it is their neutrality. House Nyreas does not pick sides, they do not partake within the power struggle. They remain in their position, close to the royal family but never the favourite, never in the spotlight. They do not compete, make sure to keep away from the power struggle. Even if the entire court is dominated by such struggle, house Nyreas will only choose side when the winner has been chosen. Even better yet, they will support both sides, keeping within the good graces of them all. Such neutrality, combined with the strategic marriage alliance, allow them to remain in power. Never at the top, but always close. Influential enough to not be challenged, to do as they please, but never so powerful that the need to be knocked down.
Melchior's mother was of noble descent as well, the Sharys house. Her family was less careful with their position, climbing rapidly within a few generations. They had positioned themselves within the royal family's favour, basking with the power they gained. A marriage with them would have been optimal, had they not been deeply intertwined in a power struggle. A marriage would be unwise, at least according to the head of the Nyreas family, Melchior's grandfather. It would put the family at risk, something that had not been done for over 2000 years. Melchior's father did not care, he was enthralled with the young Sharys, obsessed with winning her favour. Melchior's mother was entertained by his love, amused by his attempts to court her. Their affair was passionate, fiery and so intense nothing but it mattered. They married within the year, without the blessings of their family.
It's was a gamble, not only on whether their families would accept the marriage, but also whether other families would turn their gaze to them. This new union very well may be seen as a threat, or even as an offence to the house the Sharys were in conflict with. It was a gamble of not only their marriage, their life but also their family name. Strats father was furious, considering disowning his only child for the slight, but Strats's mother convinced him to welcome their son back. The marriage was a gamble yes, but perhaps it was time for house Nyreas to step out of the shadow.
The marriage was a success, producing 7 children. Such a number was almost unheard of between pureblood vampires. Their oldest child was a son, Melchior. He grew up in Varox's capital. As heir of the noble house Nyreas, he was raised at the court. Heirs often did, hoping to gain favour, to make the vital alliances needed for a noble. However, his parents marriage had elevated Melchior's status. He was not merely the son of a duke, but the son of those heavily favoured by the royal family. He was truly raised with a silver spoon in his mouth, never denied a single thing. Other noble children his age were all to eager to be his friends, hoping to claw their way to the top through him. Melchior did not mind they gained something from him, as long as their friendship also had a advantage for him. That is where Melchior's little business started. He would play mediator between the other nobles, retaining them while simultaneously playing in their hands. His position granted him certain privileges , that he would be all to happy to share, as long he got something in return. Soon his favours started to grow, turning into deals. Deals that no longer simply contained noble children, but adults as well. And soon mere adults turned into creatures and individuals from all classes of society. Melchior created a network for himself, a network of little favours, of those that owed him.
It was supposed to be a safety network, a way to ensure his position. A play of a spoiled noble brat. It did not remain that way. Not when the ruler themselves noticed him, how this one (still heir) boy had half of their court wrapped around his fingers. Melchior still remember the day, he was simply hanging around at court, laughing with some nobles. A silence fell over the hall, a shadow over Melchior, as the high ruler stood beside him. He still does not know how his ruler had managed to sneak up on his so quietly, how no one else noticed them. Of course, he immediately jumped into action, bowing in respect for the ruler. But they simply ordered him to follow them, no emotion on their face. Melchior was convinced he was done for, going to he executed for a slight he did not know he committed.
But he wasn't. No, his ruler was rather interested by his little games instead. He may not have been the most savvy politician, or the most powerful general, but his network was deeply rooted within Varox. His little spies covered all layers of society, and his ruler was rather interested in employing that network. Melchior was allowed to confine his games, his scheme and favours. Even better, he was invited to sit on the high council. How incredible. To grow for a simple heir to a high council member, someone who ruled Varox. The only condition, remain loyal. That was no hard task, Melchior had never been traitorous, never interested in that side of scheming. He had no issue swearing his blood to the ruler, no issue proclaiming his loyalty. It was a small price to pay for the safety his family had so long desired. A small price for the almost infinite power it brought.
That was 22 years ago. Melchior has remained on the high council ever since. He is the youngest and newest member. It is no easy job, and there are days he longs back to his easy going childhood. But he finds himself comfortable at his position, at the top of the top. It brings safety, power, something Melchior did not know he had a taste for until recently. Throughout these 22 years, he has strengthened his network. They are deeply rooted within Varox, and he hopes to extend them within the court realms. Humans are such useful tool when treated correctly. It is unfortunate that other Vampires seen to forget it so easily. However, he has yet to tell his ruler of his plans, of his growing networks. It is not a matter of betrayal, but he is a bit uneasy about a possible rejection.
||Other||
➸Melchior is still rather young for vampire standards. Pureblood vampires reach adulthood at 100, and he is barely 25 years older than that. Some do not take him as serious as they should due to his age.
➸He became high council member 5 mere years after reaching adulthood. He was the youngest council member in a long time. It created a strong pressure on him, but he has yet to fail or crumble under it
➸His role on the high council mostly concerns the more fragile aspects. His focus is mostly internal, leaving the bloody war to his colleges. Melchior is what one would call the spymaster, keeping touch at all levels of society through Varox. There is very little happening that he does not know of
➸I would not call him empathetic towards humans, but he certainly is not hostile to them. He is actually known for making deals with them, if he considers the, worthy so. He also will not hurt them for his amusement, finding the practice savage and unworthy.
➸He has many deals with humans. He is quite well known for them, and not even in a bad way. He intends to use them to infiltrate the other kingdoms, after all; no one pays attention to mere humans. They are the perfect little spies
