Chapter 02
I opened my windows and invited the songs of the birds perched on the single tree outside. The streets were not busy, but people jogged alongside the pavements while early rises started their day by going to work with dark blue suits and black briefcases.
"It is a beautiful morning," I thought to myself and took a sip of my black tea, when my peace was broken by the unwanted arrival of a butterfly.
I tried to blow it away, but its blue wings kept flapping annoyingly as it circled my head. I gritted my teeth in irritation and shut my windows loudly.
Great, now my whole day was ruined.
After dressing up, I left my apartment and made my way towards my workplace. The early sunlight warmed my skin as I entered 'Bakes and Cakes', the cafe I worked at.
Crimson and Melody, the two other employees who worked here were already there, sweeping the floor and polishing the counters.
"Hey, good morning!" they greeted me and I greeted them back, stifling a yawn behind my palm.
"Boss isn't here yet?"
"She is back at the office," replied Melody as she handed me a cloth.
"My turn to rub the windows, huh?" I drawled and started to wipe down the glass as Crimson flipped open the Welcome sign of the shop.
"Isn't the morning just lovely today?" Crimson hummed and I watched as her fiery red hair that flamed under the sunlight that was emitting through the window. It made her look ethereal and Goddess-like.
"An early Saturday morning is just too early to admire," I mumbled in response, my arm already sleeping with the rubbing and wiping I'd just done.
The two high schoolers chuckled in agreement before they were silenced when the first hoard of customers started to board our café.
All in all, this was the most exhausting day I've ever encountered in my two years of working here. Even Boss Annie had to come out of her office to set the plates and manage the cashier. The fact that it was Saturday made it worse, as many customers came by and left as they pleased. My mind was muddled in confusion at the fact that I had seen couples more than usual.
There were so many butterflies inside the café that I had to ask Boss to switch me to kitchen duty.
Crimson looked at me in surprise when I posed this observation when the time for us to clock out got closer.
"Why, today is Valentine's Day!" she exclaimed, watching my orbs enlarge in disbelief.
"No way, really? It's February?"
Crimson looked genuinely concerned at my statement as she blinked her eyes.
"Oh, how fast the time flies!" I gaped and leaned my body against the counter. "Boy am I spent. My whole body is hurting."
"Yeah," Melody groaned as she placed a tower of dirty dishes on the sink. "I want to spend Valentine's with my boyfriend too!"
"Did he come back from College?" I wondered and she shook her head sadly.
"No, it was impossible for him to take a day off today. But he will come to see me tomorrow! I can't wait to see him. I miss him so much!" she sighed, her face turning sad as she thought about her older boyfriend.
Crimson's eyes fixed on something at the entrance because she started to giggle a little with a wave to whoever it was out there. Both Melody and I turned to see who it was, and of course, there stood Drexel with a goofy grin on his face as he waved back.
I wish I had stayed back in the kitchen when a kaleidoscope of honey-brown and golden butterflies swarmed in, surrounding both Crimson and Drexel. I watched them blankly as Crimson jumped on her boyfriend in excitement. The butterflies danced around them as they hugged each other tightly.
"Please do that outside. The butterflies are cutting my air supply and I am single," I said unamused and the couple broke apart.
"Sorry about that! I'll be leaving then! Have a great day!" Crimson hollered and Drexel looked at her with that same crazed lovestruck gooey eyes he made every time he watched her, interlacing her hand with his.
"Ah, they are so cute together, don't you think?" Melody commented from beside me and I had to agree that they indeed, in fact, did look adorably cute together. "Well, looks like we'll be spending Valentine's, just the two of us."
I rolled my eyes as I heard the bell of the entrance ringing. "Thanks. How nice of you to be my Valentine for only one second."
"YOU ARE HERE!!!" Melody screamed and jumped above the counter and hugged her boyfriend, sending them spiraling onto the ground.
She started to repeatedly kiss his face and I aggressively wiped down the wet glasses on my hand. I swear if another couple comes to flaunt their love in my face, these glasses might just break with how hard I am holding back from cracking them!
Another group of butterflies appeared from nowhere as they excitedly started to fly around Melody and her boyfriend.
"Kai, I thought you were not free today?" she exclaimed as she took him by the shoulders.
Her boyfriend tenderly kissed her forehead. "Surprise! How can leave my beautiful girl alone on Valentine's? Someone just might snatch her up!"
"Yeah, I almost did," I mumbled as I started on the dishes after swatting away a butterfly that came too close to my liking.
"See you later!" Melody waved at me as she took her boyfriend and the butterflies(thankfully) away from the café to the outside.
For a while, I just stared at the entrance. I let out a deep breath and clutched my head. Ugh, I was getting a headache. A massage and some peace sounds about right now. But being at that lonely apartment was the last thing I wanted to do today.
My mind drifted to the violin boy I saw yesterday.
Oh, what I would do to listen to him again! Maybe I should pass by the park to see if he was there?
Yeah, I will do that.
With determination, I finished my share of work quite quickly and bid my Boss goodbye. The sun was ready to end the day by the time I had reached the park.
Ah, it really was Valentine's Day!
Butterflies filled the park as couples had their dates and outings with wide smiles and blushes on their faces. On a normal day, I would turn my back and return to my apartment at this sight, but my eyes sought hopelessly and my ears listened for any traces of the violin boy and his song, but to no avail.
However, I decided to sit beside the fountain, hoping that he would appear miraculously and play his violin for my ears.
Yesterday, he had been here an hour late, so I waited in suspense. Couples who passed by watched me pitifully or worriedly, undoubtedly thinking something akin to me being alone or stood up.
Despite their stares, I ignored them and their lovey-dovey moments and leaned against the edge of the fountain. I closed my eyes, hoping that the sound of the water gushing behind me would soothe the pain in my head.
I was dozing off when I felt a tickle on the tip of my nose. My eyes opened and met with a blue butterfly who was calmly hovering over my nose. With a sigh, I shooed it away when the familiar strings of a violin resonated towards me.
He was here.
