Every Move Counts (Chapter 7)~Jeffory's Scream

My eyes open slowly. I twist and turn, "Where am I?" I mumble. Once I move my arm, an extreme pain surges thru it. I yell and wince. "Calm down!" Brendan says. I look over at him, "Why'd you knock me out?" I ask. "We had to do some work to nurse your wounds. The only way you could avoid pain was if you were unconscious. I am so so sorry!" Brendan apologizes. "It's ok, I guess." I mumble. Brendan clasps his hands together and smiles, "That's good!" He exclaims cheerfully. Garroth pops his head into the tent, "Hey, guys. Uhh, Laurance... You might want to see this." Garroth says. I carefully get out from the bed. I glance at Brendan, asking for permission to leave. Brendan nods in approval, "You're free to go. Just be careful with your arm, ok?" Brendan says. "Yup. I'll be careful." I assure. Brendan smiles, then Garroth takes my hand and whisks me off to the maze. "Why're we here?" I ask. I see a bunch of people here, all of the circling around one person. Jeffory. "What're they doing?" I ask Garroth quietly. Everybody except Vylad and myself has a staff of some sort in their hands. Even Garroth. "We're banishing him off the maze. What he did to you is against the rules here in Roto. He also got stung, which makes him insane. He would've died even if we kept him here. In the maze, his death will be faster and he won't have to suffer as much." Garroth explains. I look down, "So you're banishing him, right?" I question. "Correct..." Garroth states. "Garroth, get over here!" Travis commands. Garroth looks down at me. We make eye contact, "It'll be fine." Garroth assures. I nod timidly, then Garroth jogs over to Travis, "Coming!" The blonde exclaims. I make my way over to Vylad. I engulf him in a hug, to where his eyesight is blinded from Jeffory's banishing. "What're they going to do to him?" Vylad asks innocently, oblivious to what's actually going on. "What are they going to do to Jeffory?" Vylad adds. I think of a response. Vylad doesn't deserve to be here and if there's anything I can do to make it easier for him, I will. "Jeffory's just... Going on vacation." I reply. "What's vacation?" Vylad questions. "Vacation is where people go somewhere for a little while." I inform. "Oh..." That's all that comes from Vylad's mouth. "NO! DON'T MAKE ME! I DON'T WANT TO DIE! I DON'T WANT TO DIE! TRAVIS, PLEASE! KATELYN! SOMEBODY, PLEASE, HELP ME!" Jeffory cries. "This is your punishment." Travis growls. Katelyn stays silent. Vylad burrows his head into my chest. I hoist him up and run off. I don't want him seeing this. Once I make it to the hammocks, I lay Vylad down. I sit down on the hammock beside his, "It'll be fine." I assure. Vylad nods. To change the gloomy subject, I change the topic, "So... What do you like to do?" I ask. Vylad's face lights up as he starts rambling on and on about his interests and duties in Roto.

I glance back to look at Laurance and Vylad, but I notice them over by the hammocks. I can only see the back of Vylad's head, but I can tell he's going on and on about something, due to the fact that he's using his arms to help him talk. Laurance is smiling. I guess Laurance took Vylad out from the scene. Laurance is good to Vylad. "Garroth! Stop making goo-goo eyes at Laurance and help us!" Travis exclaims. His voice seems rushed and impatient. I know Travis hates doing this, but both of us know it's for the best of Roto. I turn my head back at Jeffory, who's arms are tied up with some rope. Everybody starts walking towards Jeffory. When he tries to escape, somebody pushes him back with their staff. "I don't want to die! Please! Let me go! I-I promise I'll be good!" Jeffory pleads. A look of desperation is plastered on his face. "This is your punishment, Jeffory. Accept it..." Travis pauses. We take another step closer, "AND MOVE INTO THE MAZE." Travis yells. His voice is demonic and low. We take a few steps closer. Travis, Aaron, Nate and I all enter the maze as the rest stay behind. We push Ben behind the walls, then quick run out as the maze's entrance starts to close. Jeffory tried to follow us, but when he noticed the entrance closing, he knew it was no use. Nate is the last one out. Aaron, Travis, Nate and I stand side by side, waiting for the maze entrance to close. Once the maze doors close, we hear Jeffory's whimpers. It echoes. Everybody stares at the maze for a moment, before slowly spreading out. Travis, Aaron and I are the last to leave. We knew Jeffory very well, but now... But now he's gone.

•Back To Laurance's POV•

Once night falls, there's no celebration. No laughing. Nothing except an eerie silence. Everyone mourns about Jeffory's death, but nobody can do anything about it. I'm the last one awake. For some reason, I just couldn't seem to fall asleep. There's a huge scream coming from the maze. Jeffory's scream. He's now dead. I look around and see Garroth starring down at the ground. Aaron blinks occasionally as he stares at the sky. Travis just sits up with his hands in his lap. The four of us look at each other. "We should get to bed..." I suggest in a hushed voice. The others nod, then we lay down and at least try to get some sleep. But I can already tell that a restless night is ahead of us.
