The Song
The Song
Its melodic notes soothe my fears
And my quivering spirit.
All around the sighs, the tears,
Yet peace falls on us who hear it.
Haltingly, with glistening eyes,
Her fingers strike the keys,
And though too soon she knows she dies,
She plays sweet melodies.
Stronger, sweeter, with love she plays,
Forgetting now her fate.
The music easing these harsh days
As her death awaits.
How cruel to rob earth of joy
And Of her fervent songs!
How wrong for death's employ
To curtail it all along.
I sit and watch her move and sway
With the music's ebbs and swells.
While the moments melt away,
The sweet melody does tell
Its tale of hurt and great peace,
Its glad, yet sorrowful song.
Tears and joy both increase
As the notes prolong.
She stills. The song ends,
And the notes die away;
But the sweet song still sends
The meaning that she did play.
Oh, to sing through the pain,
To play through all the tears--
This is the greatest gain
That is taught throughout the years!
And even now, I hear its notes
But more than that its song,
"Do not fear what life forebodes,
Life is too short, and death too long."
