44. Gathering Strength

Ever since Namjoon gave her the letter Friday, she had been unable to look at it. She recognized Jungkook's familiar writing in the construction of her name on the front of the envelope. Their last night together he had wanted some time alone to write a letter to the boys for the binder. She had allowed him to do so and hadn't realized that in that time, he had also written a letter for her. Lia had tucked the letter in her bedside dresser drawer, not able to bring herself to read what was more than likely a goodbye.

As it was, Lia couldn't even think about their last night together without tears welling to her eyes. She felt badly that Namjoon and Jimin had both had to waste their day doing damage control. She just couldn't bring herself to function when she knew what was about to happen. Today was Sunday. Tomorrow would be the last day before the end. She hated thinking of it that way, but she was unable to think of it in a different light.

Hearing a knock at the door, Lia brushed away the tears on her cheek to go answer it. She assumed that it had to be Yoongi.

"I'm not up for company," she said as she approached the door.

"I never am," he replied, "But I'm here so you need to open up."

Lia gave a faint smirk as she unlocked the door and opened it to see Yoongi standing there with his disguise on. He looked at her and noticed she was still in her pajamas. He sighed, grabbing her by the wrist and dragging her back into her apartment. She was shocked by Yoongi's actions, stumbling after him. He shut the door to her apartment; Yeontan racing over to see him immediately. Yoongi ignored him as he took in the state of things. Lia knew that he must have read Jungkook's note along with Namjoon and Jimin's. Yoongi's eyes took in the balls of tissues everywhere and the bed that she had made for herself on the couch; dirty dishes stacked on the coffee table in front of it.

"Go wash up and get dressed," said Yoongi.

"But I don't..."

"That wasn't a suggestion," said Yoongi as he dropped her wrist. "Now go do as I said."

Lia knew that Yoongi could be cold sounding, but he had never been so bossy before. Listening to him, she walked towards the bathroom to get some clothes before going into the bathroom to take a shower. By the time she emerged fifteen minutes later, her eyes widened in shock to see that everything had been picked up and cleaned. She turned her head to the side to see that Yoongi was just finishing drying the last dish and setting it back where it belonged. Tears pricked her eyes as Yoongi looked over at her, but he pretended not to notice.

"Good. You're ready now."

"Ready? Ready for -"

Her line of questioning was broken off as Yoongi moved behind her to direct her towards the front door.

"Get your shoes on. There is somewhere I want to take you."

Lia nodded as she slipped her shoes on. No sooner had she laced them then Yoongi was tugging her out the door again. He had never taken his disguise off the entire time he'd been in her apartment, so it was hard for Lia to tell what he was thinking. She knew better than to ask as he led her out of the building and down the sidewalk.

Lia lost track of how long they walked, feeling her legs start to ache after they had rounded what felt like the hundredth corner. Yoongi had yet to loosen the hold on her arm. Just when she was about to demand to know the answer, they came to a halt. Lia looked at what laid before them; her breath taken away.

"Where are we?" asked Lia; Yoongi smirking beneath his mask.

He removed the mask from his face as he turned to look at her.

"I haven't been here ever since everything," said Yoongi, "But before it all, this used to be my secret hideaway where I would come to get inspired; to find comfort."

Lia looked from Yoongi to the scene before them again. They had obviously walked outside the city enough for wildlife to take over. A field of flowers greeted her eyes; the yellow and light purple flowers dancing about in the wind. The field of flowers gradually inclined as it rose uphill where a lone tree sat. Yoongi switched from holding her arm to one of her hands as he led her through the flowers up to the top by the tree. Once there, he let go of her hand and took a seat on the ground, leaning his back up against the tree trunk. Lia moved to sit down beside him, noticing a lake a little ways away.

The two of them sat in silence; the sounds of nature encasing them. It was so peaceful and so quiet amidst the raging emotions that Lia had been feeling that she felt pain spring to her chest anew. She blinked her eyes quickly to try and get the tears to stop. Even though Yoongi wasn't looking at her at the moment, he moved to place a hand over one of her knees to give it a gentle squeeze. It was as if that action gave her permission to break down, so she did just that. The tears trailed down her face as she kept staring off at the beautiful lake in the distance; Yoongi's hand staying on her knee. He kept his face turned towards the beauty in the distance to give her the privacy she needed.

"How...how do you get goodbyes not to hurt?" Lia finally asked after she had managed to calm herself down some.

Yoongi didn't say anything for a moment. Eventually, he turned his head to the side to look at Lia. He saw that tears were still on her cheeks and reached out a free hand to wipe them away. He looked away again after the gentle act, watching the afternoon sun shimmer on the surface of the lake.

"Goodbyes are never easy," said Yoongi. "You'd be a fool to convince yourself of that. You just have to try to find a way to live with the pain and to become stronger from it."

"Sounds easier said than done," said Lia.

"You think that, but you'd be surprised. We're all stronger than we realize when it really comes down to it. That includes you, Lia."

Lia gave a faint smile as she looked over at Yoongi who was still focusing his gaze forward.

"Thank you for taking me here," said Lia as Yoongi nodded his head.

"This was the only way I could find to thank you for everything you've done for us," said Yoongi. "We've only had one day a week for as long as we can remember. All our worlds felt halted until you."

It was in that moment that Lia truly realized why Jungkook thought it selfish to continue allowing them all to share a week now that he knew the truth. It was selfish of her to want him to do so even if it meant they might lose touch with each other forever.

Lia and Yoongi stayed there until the sun started to set. When the sun started to set, they walked back to the apartment. Yoongi stuck around to cook for her and tried to keep her distracted from the volatile emotions that kept wanting to creep in. As she finished helping him with cleaning the dishes after they ate, she noticed his hesitation to leave.

"Yoongi, are you okay?" asked Lia as she dried off her hands.

"I would like to spend the night here," he said, "In bed with you, but not...not like that..."

Lia blushed, but understood what he meant. She had always known Yoongi as standoffish, but she knew he was doing that so that - when Monday came around - she could spend every last second with Taehyung that she could. Lia nodded her head, moving to give Yoongi a hug. She felt him stiffen a bit under her hug before he slowly wrapped his arms about her back.

That night as the two of them laid side-by-side in the bed, her eyes kept looking at the alarm clock. It was almost midnight. She felt the bed behind her shift slightly; Yoongi letting out a soft noise. She turned her head to see the change beginning to happen in the strands of moonlight that filtered into the room. Soon enough Taehyung in all his blue-haired glory was lying in the bed beside her. She smiled softly as he cracked open his eyes; the sleep disappearing from them when he realized where he was.

"It's okay," said Lia when she saw the panic in his eyes, reaching out a hand to grab one of his.

"No. No...I can't be here," said Taehyung as he sat up; Lia sitting up with him.

"And why can't you be?" she asked as she watched him get up from the bed.

"Because I...I just can't."

"Why are you acting so weird?" asked Lia but Taehyung didn't answer as he walked across the bedroom to the door.

His hand had just landed on the doorknob to the bedroom as Lia said from behind him, "Today is my last day with you. Today is the day of the surgery to reverse all of this."

"What?"

Taehyung turned after the question of shock had left his lips, noticing that Lia was still sitting in bed with her fingers wrapped about the blankets. It was hard to tell if she was serious or not since he was unable to see her facial expression in the dark. He walked back over to the bed so he could see her more clearly.

"What are you talking about?" asked Taehyung.

"Jungkook...he knows the truth," said Lia as she looked at Taehyung. "Why did you keep it from me?"

"I was...I was trying to protect you both..." said Taehyung as Lia turned away from him.

"I wish you had just been honest with me," said Lia, "But it doesn't matter now. Jungkook gave the doctor consent and it's supposed to happen today."

"I..."

Taehyung didn't know what to say. He watched as Lia took a deep breath and let it out slowly, turning her head to look at him again.

"So I ask again...why can't you stay?" asked Lia.

'It's because I love you,' thought Taehyung, 'And I promised myself I wouldn't stand in the way of you and Jungkook anymore.'

Taehyung didn't say any of this out loud though as he instead moved to sit back down on the bed beside her. He had to put his own feelings aside for the moment because right now Lia needed him. Taehyung moved to slip his arms about her, letting her lean against his chest as he rubbed her back softly. Lia closed her eyes as Taehyung hugged her closely to him. Eventually, the two of them laid back down beside each other, still cuddled close together as they temporarily traded the cold reality before them for sweet dreams.
