36. The Truth Untold

Jin and Lia sat at the small table that had been fully furnished with a variety of what Mr. Kim claimed were Jin's favorite dishes. For the home being as big as it was, Lia was surprised by the fact that Mr. Kim had such a little table to eat off of. She figured though that that was the case because the man didn't want to feel lonely. As Jin and Lia sat next to each other though at the crowded table, it made Lia feel as if she was under some sort of microscope. Mr. Kim's gaze kept flicking back and forth between the two of them. He waited until they had both filled up their plates with some food before asking his first question.

"Jin, where have you been all this time?"

Lia could tell that Jin wasn't sure how to answer that question, so Mr. Kim followed up with another question.

"Did you want to get away from me for some reason?"

Jin's eyes widened as he looked up from his untouched food to his father to see that his eyes had welled up.

"I...I understand that I couldn't accurately take on the role of mother and father in your life, but I tried...I..."

Jin reached out a hand to put it over his father's hand. Mr. Kim immediately turned his hand so that he was gripping Jin's tightly as he looked over at him.

"I don't think so," said Jin, "But I really don't remember anything. None of us do."

"None of us? What do you mean?" asked Mr. Kim.

Jin's face flushed as he flicked his eyes in Lia's direction. It was obvious that he wanted to be saved from the line of questioning that he had no idea how to answer.

"It's complicated and I'm not sure you'd believe us if we told you," answered Lia.

"I want the truth no matter how complicated that is," said Mr. Kim as he looked over at her.

Lia nodded, taking a deep breath as she said, "Jin is only around on Wednesday. Every other day of the week he is someone else."

"You're going to have to explain that more," said Mr. Kim. "Who is Jin the rest of the week if not himself?"

"Monday he is Taehyung. Tuesday he is Hobi. Thursday he is Jungkook. Friday he is Namjoon. Saturday he is Jimin and Sunday he is Yoongi."

Mr. Kim didn't say anything after that for a moment as he looked at the two of them.

"You're kidding..."

"No, I'm not," said Lia as Jin drew back his hand to keep on his side of the table.

"Those names you just said...those were the names of Jin's best friends that all disappeared around the same time as him..." mumbled Mr. Kim.

"Do you know why?" asked Lia as Mr. Kim shook his head.

"I know Jin said that one of them was deathly sick and that they were going on a brief trip together because there wasn't much time left for them. When Jin didn't come home, I figured he just didn't want to. I didn't know what happened..."

One of them had been deathly sick. Lia froze hearing those words. He made it sound as if one of them was close to death before they all vanished.

"Which one of them was sick?" asked Lia.

"I don't recall unfortunately," said Mr. Kim.

While Lia wished he knew, she knew at least that it wasn't Jin. Mr. Kim spent the rest of supper providing them with what limited knowledge he had of Jin's relationship with the other six. To Lia it sounded as if Jin thought of them like brothers and they did everything together. Mr. Kim never disapproved of them, but he also rarely saw them in the house as Jin was always out and about doing things with them.

After supper, Mr. Kim insisted that they both spend the night in one of the guest rooms upstairs. He still didn't believe the whole idea of Jin turning into someone else at midnight. Lia knew that Jungkook wouldn't be the happiest about waking up in a new surrounding tomorrow, but figured that it would be okay in the end. She trusted Mr. Kim and Jin did too. They had to let someone in if they were to figure out how to put an end to the madness.

Lia had a hard time sleeping that night though. Jin had suggested she sleep in the large bed beside him to be a comfort to Jungkook when he came around at midnight. She had tried to do that but her thoughts had started to race and didn't allow her to sleep. She laid there and waited for Jin to fall asleep before slipping out of the bed. As quietly as possible, she began to rummage throughout the room for paper. If she couldn't sleep, she'd start her pros and cons list before Jungkook came around at midnight. Eventually finding some paper in a drawer, she moved to sit on the window sill where the moonlight spilled into the room. She was so lost in writing her list that she didn't notice Jin waking up and slipping out of the bed and over to her until his hand was on her shoulder.

"When I suggested that you make a list, I didn't expect you to make that instead of sleep."

Lia smiled a soft smile as she turned to see a sleepy smile on Jin's face; his eyes barely open as he stood before her in his gray and white striped pajamas.

"I'm sorry."

"Get to bed and put that away," he said as he slipped a hand about her wrist. "It's almost midnight. I can tell."

"Because of how dark it is?" she asked.

"No, by the fact that I can barely stay awake," he remarked as he gripped her wrist tighter for a moment before his body fell down towards the floor as if he had fainted.

Alarmed, Lia dropped the list that she had started onto the floor, moving to scoop his limp body into her arms before he came into contact with the floor. As she looked at his face in the moonlight, she noticed he had changed. It wasn't Jin she was holding anymore but Jungkook. His eyes still remained closed as she gently shook him by the shoulders, causing him to eventually open his eyes to look at her.

He didn't say anything at first as he kept his eyes locked on her, soon looking about the darkened and unfamiliar room he found himself in before shifting to sit up.

"Lia, where am I? Why am I on the floor?..."

"It's a long story," said Lia with a sigh as Jungkook's eyes shifted to the list that Lia had let drop onto the floor, spotlighted by the moonlight like a piece of incriminating evidence. He leaned forward, snatching it up in his hands.

"What's this?" He asked as he noticed his name and Taehyung's name on the paper followed by a pros and cons list.

"Jungkook it's too late to worry about that," said Lia as she tried to reach forward to snatch it from his hands, only for him to lean back so she couldn't touch it.

"Oh my word, you did sleep with Taehyung," muttered Jungkook as his eyes looked over what little Lia had written; his lips forming into a tight frown.

"You're the one that gave him permission," snapped Lia.

"I didn't think you two would actually do it though," said Jungkook as he looked up at her; hurt and anger brewing in his eyes.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Lia hadn't wanted to get into this now, but it was obvious that Jungkook wasn't about to drop it. She moved to push herself off the floor, leaving him sitting there in the moonlight with the list as it slowly became more and more crumpled as his hand turned into a fist.

"I thought you were in love with me."

"Jungkook, please..."

"That was a test!" he interrupted angrily. "Do you think that I would really allow that?! How long did it take for you to give in to him?!"

"JEON JUNGKOOK!" Lia snapped. "Listen to me, will you? First of all, you do not get to control who I date so giving Taehyung permission in the first place was absolutely ludicrous! And second of all, are you really going to sit there on the floor getting into an argument with me in Jin's father's house?!"

Jungkook fell silent at that, looking about the room he was in once more. He looked back at Lia to see that she was standing there in front of him with her fists clenched and tears shining in her eyes. The anger that he felt began to seep out of him like he was a deflating balloon, but it was too late. The damage was done.

"Lia, I..."

"Goodnight, Jungkook," she said before turning on her heels to leave the room.

As she left the guest room, she realized she didn't have anywhere to storm off to. This wasn't the apartment building, so she couldn't go back to her apartment to hole up in there. She was in Mr. Kim's large house. She was thankful though that the house was so big as the silence indicated to her that Mr. Kim obviously hadn't heard the fight. With tears burning in her eyes, she eventually stole down the front steps and outside into the night.

Lia had no idea where she was going; her bare feet slipping on the blades of cold grass. By the time she stopped walking, she was standing in front of a line of trees. The wind whistled through them, rattling the leaves as if whispering to her and giving her comfort. Sinking down onto her butt, she hugged her knees tightly to her chest and started to cry. If Jungkook hadn't been so bull-headed, he would have seen that the list was barely filled out. It didn't matter though. The fact that it existed was enough to make him angry at her.

She didn't know how long she sat there before she heard steps coming behind her. Eventually someone came to sit down beside her. Without turning, she could see the gray and white striped pajamas and knew it was Jungkook.

"Is this another test?" she said more acidly than she meant to.

"I'm an idiot, aren't I?" asked Jungkook as Lia huffed.

"You certainly don't have a way with words, I'll tell you that."

Lia was angry at herself when a tear or two silently tripped down her cheeks as she stared at the trees before her.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I shouldn't have said those things."

"Don't be sorry for saying things you mean," she said as her eyes scanned the trees. "You wanted to test Taehyung and I."

"I knew you had feelings for him and I stupidly thought that if I gave him permission to sleep with you, you'd stand your ground. You'd choose me..."

"That's some twisted logic you've got there."

"I know. I'm sorry."

Lia was silent for a moment as she moved a hand to brush the still tears off her cheeks.

"I do love you, Jungkook," said Lia as she kept her gaze focused ahead of her instead of over at him. "That's what makes it all so hard because I love him too."

"I know. I'm sorry."

She sighed at hearing him apologize again; each apology he fed her laced with more and more regret and remorse. Lia finally turned her head to look at him and saw that he was looking at her with tears in his doe brown eyes that ached her heart.

"You make things so hard sometimes," she said to which he smirked weakly.

"I'm..."

"Sorry, I know," finished Lia as he reached out a hand to grab one of hers. She allowed it, turning her hand over so that she could firmly grab his hand, lacing her fingers through his.

"Can we put this behind us?" asked Jungkook. "Start this Thursday over?"

"We can try," said Lia as she felt Jungkook squeeze her hand, leaning over to press a gentle kiss to her cheek before helping her stand up.

They walked back inside where it was warmer, soon ending up back in the same bedroom they had been in before. Crawling under the warm covers, Lia didn't pay attention to the fact that she couldn't see the pros and cons list anywhere. Instead she paid attention to the fact that Jungkook was pulling her close to his body so they were resting against each other, letting his hands and lips give a more eloquent and passionate apology than his words ever could.
