25. Gray Area

Jungkook hadn't slept so roughly in a while. He had a hard time getting any sort of sleep that night what with the flu and with the knowledge of Taehyung and Lia floating around in his head. He was jumping to all sorts of wild conclusions from seeing her in his clothes; his mind conjuring up images that made his heart break. As the early morning light slipped across the floor of the bedroom, Jungkook gave up on sleeping altogether as he moved to stand to his feet. The room seemed to sway as he ambled towards the bathroom to try to throw some cold water on his face from the hot flash he was experiencing.

As he entered the bathroom, he was immediately brought to his knees in front of the toilet as a wave of nausea swept over him. He retched into the toilet, clinging to the rim with his hands. The force of the bile coming up at that moment was enough to bring tears to his eyes. He closed his eyes; Taehyung and Lia painted to the undersides of his lids. Them hugging. Exchanging smiles, kisses, touches...

Jungkook sat back against the bathroom wall after his stomach settled; tears dancing in an unsteady stream down his fever kissed cheeks. He wondered why she would do that to him, but then again, he wondered if maybe his reaction towards her had been irrational. He hadn't let her explain and had instead allowed his jealousy to cloud things again.

"I pushed her..." he whispered as he remembered shoving her away so hard that she ended up on her butt. Another tear dropped from his eye at the thought of her on the floor.

Even though he didn't feel as if he could stand, he couldn't sit here and pity himself. He had to go apologize to her. He had been a jerk and being sick was not an excuse. He would have time to talk about Taehyung with her later. Right now he had to apologize for his actions.

Walking slowly out of the bathroom, he walked towards the bedroom door. When he opened it, he almost tripped on what lay on the other side. Jungkook looked down to see that Lia was lying on her side on the floor outside the bedroom fast asleep. Yeontan had tucked himself up against her chest in a little ball. Jungkook stared at the two of them for a moment, not moving or saying anything.

'Did she sleep here all night?' thought Jungkook, feeling guilty all over again for how he acted.

When she still continued to sleep soundly on the floor, Jungkook crouched down and slipped his arms underneath her. He then proceeded to pick her up, carrying her back into the bedroom to lay her gently down on the side of the bed he hadn't been sleeping on. She didn't wake the entire time, only shifting once he put her down to get comfortable before slipping back to sleep.

Yeontan - who was woken up when Jungkook picked up Lia - looked at Jungkook as he left the bedroom. Jungkook felt the puppy staring at him, turning once he reached the kitchen to see that that really was the case; the puppy remained unmoved from where it was by the bedroom door.

"What?" asked Jungkook.

Yeontan let out a yip in reply to which Jungkook rolled his eyes.

"I know. I was a jerk," he mumbled.

Turning away from Yeontan, Jungkook moved to tug open the fridge door. As the light cast a glow throughout the interior, he saw all the carefully packaged and labeled meals that sat there. The handwriting on the meals wasn't Jin's. As he dug one of the meals out, he looked at it more closely to see that it was Lia's writing. Lia had prepared all the meals while she had cared for Jin. He put the meal back in the fridge, shutting the door with a sigh. Jungkook buried his face in the crook of an arm as he started coughing, rummaging for something to kill the taste of the puke in his mouth. He opted for grabbing a cracker, chewing on it on his careful way back to the bedroom. When he reached the bedroom doorway, he froze. Lia was sitting up on the bed and was looking right at him. The two of them locked eyes.

"Did you carry me in here?" asked Lia finally to break the silence.

Jungkook nodded his head as he entered the bedroom. He swallowed the cracker in his mouth as he sat on his side of the bed.

"I should go," she said, immediately moving to stand up once Jungkook sat down. "I have work and I..."

"Lia, I'm sorry."

Lia paused as she stood by the bed, turning to see that Jungkook wasn't looking at her and was instead looking down at his feet.

"I'm sorry for pushing you last night," he continued when Lia didn't respond.

"Is that all you're sorry for?" Lia dared ask, watching Jungkook turn to face her.

"It was wrong of me to fly off the handle," he said, "But those are Taehyung's clothes, aren't they?"

She nodded; his eyes looking from the necklace she wore to the bracelet.

"Are you and Taehyung dating?"

"It's...no."

"It's what?" he asked. "What were you going to say?"

"I was going to say it's complicated."

Jungkook moved a hand to the bedspread, tightening his fingers in it at her words. He was trying to keep his anger in check.

"Will you tell me about it?" Jungkook finally asked when he figured out what to say.

"I have to go to work..."

"Call out," he said.

It wasn't hard to persuade her. Lia didn't want to leave Jungkook, especially since he was sick and they had things to discuss. She just nodded her head as she went to go fetch her cell phone to call work. This time the transaction with the secretary was a bit different. She said that was fine; that Mr. Kim had also called out today and the office was closing early. Lia frowned when she got off the call, wondering what had made Mr. Kim call out but deciding that was a question for another day. She had Jungkook to deal with right now and that was headache enough.

Moving back into the bedroom, she saw that he had shifted so that his back was pressed against the headboard of the bed. His eyes followed her movements as she moved to sit back on the other side of the bed.

"Where do you want me to start?"

"From wherever the beginning is," said Jungkook as he looked at her.

"Before I start though, you need to promise me you won't just irrationally fly off the handle," said Lia. "You've done that twice to me over Tae."

"Alright," said Jungkook, deciding to ignore the fact that she had just referred to him as 'Tae'. "I promise you I will try my best."

"That's not the same."

"That's the best you're getting," said Jungkook honestly. "Now tell me."

So Lia sat there, telling Jungkook everything. She started with telling him about how Taehyung had been upset by Jungkook's note (a fact that had a small grin take over his face that Lia had to gently punch him in the arm over) and then told him about the mission she'd given Taehyung. She glossed over the discovery for the moment to admit him kissing her and then she went after him to kiss him back. By this point, Jungkook had his eyes shut; his imagination feeding him pictures of what happened after the second kiss.

"So did you two end up..."

"No," said Lia quickly as she looked over at Jungkook. "We just cuddled and kissed the rest of the night."

"Just cuddled and kissed," mocked Jungkook as he opened his eyes, letting out a snort. "You make that sound like it's not a big deal. You made out with him all night."

"You told me that you would keep your anger in check."

"I'm not yelling at you, am I? Take that as a win."

Lia sighed but nodded as Jungkook looked over at her.

"So if you two didn't do the deed, why are you wearing his clothes?"

"He asked me to stay with him for the night so he could be distracted from what he discovered. He gave me clothes to change into to be more comfortable. I fell to sleep with him, but that was it."

"You're so dismissive of it all," said Jungkook with a sigh, "Okay, fine. Say that was it as you put it. Why are you still wearing his clothes when it isn't even close to Monday?"

"I wore them to bed Tuesday night," she said, "And then when I got up Wednesday morning to give Yeontan to Jin to watch, I saw how sick he was. I forgot about everything else to take care of him."

Jungkook didn't say anything, pressing his lips together into a firm line. He turned his face away from her as if the wall was more interesting.

"What was this earth shattering discovery Taehyung made that earned him such a make out session?" Jungkook finally asked, still looking at the wall.

"He looked into my boss who is Jin's father. He found out that you all knew each other before all this and that you're all missing, presumed dead," said Lia, deciding it best to just rip the band-aid off.

Jungkook was obviously trying to process it all as he moved to stand up from the bed.

"Where are you going?" asked Lia as she watched Jungkook hobble away from the bed like an old man. She got up from the bed, watching as he turned sideways to look at her. She saw the pain in his eyes that he was trying to disguise.

"Why didn't you tell me this?"

"I just...I was trying not to alarm you."

"But you chose to trust Taehyung?"

"It's not about trust."

"Then what's it about?! Do you like him more or something? Because if that's it, just tell me."

"You're getting angry."

"I can't help it!"

Jungkook tilted a bit after he said that; Lia moving in to try to catch him. Jungkook moved his hands towards her again to try to stop her, and Lia knew it was her time to be snappy back.

"Don't push me. I'm trying to help you, and if you want to let your jealous self be sick and miserable then so be it. However - if you push me - I swear I'll hit you back. I don't care that you're sick. Understand me?"

Jungkook smirked at her snappy response back, allowing her to slip an arm about him.

"Now, are you trying to hobble your way to the bathroom?"

He nodded his head; the inability to speak taking over him again as he felt the cracker slowly making its way back up. Lia helped him to the bathroom and had just crossed the threshold when Jungkook was unable to hold back anymore. Lia was trying to navigate Jungkook onto his knees in front of the toilet, but hadn't made it in time; some of his bile ending up on the front of her shirt. She sat back on her haunches as Jungkook turned his head so the rest of it landed in the toilet bowl. When he was done, he sat back against the wall like before, looking over at Lia and her disgusted face as she looked down at her shirt. Even though Jungkook felt like crap, he couldn't help the small smile that came across his face or the laugh that followed. Hearing the weak laughter, Lia lifted her head to look over at Jungkook.

"What's so funny?" she snapped.

"I threw up on your shirt," said Jungkook. "That means you have to change out of Taehyung's clothes now. You have no choice."

Lia didn't know how to respond right off, looking at him sternly.

"Why do I think you did this on purpose?"

Jungkook continued to chuckle weakly; the smile growing a bit wider despite his crappy state. Lia found that she couldn't be mad at the man when he showed shades of his foolish self like that. She ended up chuckling too.

"Guess I'll have to go across the way to get some clothes..."

"No you're not," said Jungkook quickly. "I have something different in mind."

Lia shut the shower off when she was satisfied that she no longer smelled like vomit. Reaching a hand outside the shower for the towel, she stepped out of the shower to look at the clothes that had been laid out for her.

"I still think he did it on purpose," she mumbled out loud to herself as she slipped into the black t-shirt that Jungkook had given her; slipping the black gym shorts on after. She had to tie the strings tighter to make sure they didn't fall down her waist.

Walking over to the sink after she was changed, she squeezed her hair out one more time in the sink before looking at where the jewelry was lying. She had half thought that Jungkook would swipe Taehyung's bracelet while she was in the shower, but it still laid there. She grabbed up the bracelet and necklace in her hand, walking back out into the bedroom where Jungkook was lying in bed. He coughed, sitting up when he saw her coming. A smile appeared on his lips when he saw her cross the room.

"You look much better in my clothes just for the record," he said as Lia rolled her eyes. She put the jewelry on the bedside dresser on her side of the bed before looking at him.

"You should be sleeping to try to get better faster."

"I will get some rest if you stay with me."

"Jungkook..."

"You're really going to deny a sick man his request?"

Sighing, Lia moved to get into the bed to lay down beside him. No sooner had she done so then Jungkook was scooting her way, wrapping his body about her like a leech.

"Ew. You smell so sweaty and sick..." she teased as his head nuzzled against her neck; his hair hitting her chin and lips.

"You'll live..." He murmured as he held her tightly to him, pressing a feverishly warm peck to her neckline.

She could tell that he was getting sleepy, so she didn't dare move. Lia felt him keep his head where it was right under her chin, soon falling fast asleep; a soft snore leaving his mouth a few minutes later.

'You're lucky I love you,' she thought as he clung to her; a small smile on her face.

She couldn't bring herself to say the words out loud though. She told herself it was because she didn't want to wake him up even though that was a lie. As she waited for sleep to come to her, she thought about her feelings for both Jungkook and Taehyung; her heart resting firmly in the gray area between the two.
