23. I'm Fine

Wednesday morning rolled around as Lia woke up to her alarm ringing beside her. She grappled a hand out towards her bedside dresser as she slowly opened her eyes. Her eyes immediately landed on the jewelry that laid there, rousing in her the same panic and questions as the day before. Sitting up, she moved to put the necklace and bracelet on before going to check on Yeontan. She wanted to make sure he was settled before getting ready to go to work. Besides, focusing on something else other than Taehyung and Jungkook would help keep her anxiety down.

As she came out into the other room, she moved to walk towards the happy puppy. Even though Jin hadn't come to see her last Wednesday, he had offered to watch Yeontan. Scooping Yeontan up in the t-shirt, she slipped her phone and key into the pocket of the sweatpants as she made her way across the hallway to the other apartment, knocking at it gently. There was no answer to her first knock so she tried again. Eventually she heard someone rustling on the other side of the door, watching as it opened to reveal a very sick looking Jin.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," he lied before turning his head as a coughing fit took over him.

"No, you're not," she said, entering the apartment.

Jin didn't put up a fight with her entering since he was still coughing. Lia slipped inside, setting Yeontan down as she shut the door and pressed a hand to his forehead. It was burning up.

"You're sick," she said. "You feel like you have a fever."

"I'm going to be fine," he said. "You don't need to worry about me."

Lia didn't listen to Jin, gently directing him back to the bedroom, making him lie down on the bed once they reached it. He tried to weakly protest, but he was too weak from whatever virus he had caught and Lia was not going to be swayed.

"I have too many things to do. I can't afford to be laid up in bed," he complained.

"Stop that! You're sick and trying to do things when you are sick will just make you feel worse off."

She knew that Jin needed to sleep and get rest to feel better, but she worried that if she left for work that he would try to get up and lie to himself that he was fine to get things done. Lia groaned inwardly at the thought of having to call her boss and tell him - again - that she had an emergency, but when it came down to it, these boys were more important to her than her job.

Lia moved away from the bed as she dug out her phone. Jin sat up on the bed, looking over at her.

"Lia, what are you doing?"

"I'm making a phone call. Lie down and try to rest."

Dialing the number for her job, she stepped back out into the kitchen of the apartment, liberally opening cupboards to see what sort of food they had tucked away that would settle well in the stomach of a sick person. After the second ring, she heard the secretary's chipper and somewhat mechanical sounding voice on the other end.

"Hi. This is Lia Song. I'm calling to say that I won't be in to work today. There's another emergency."

"Hang on one moment please, " said the secretary.

When Lia Song had first appeared within the Exposure walls, she had a feeling that she wouldn't last long. She was a woman in her mid-twenties that was no doubt indecisive about her life and where she wanted to work. She just didn't think that she would have this thought confirmed so quickly. The secretary moved to press a button on her phone, waiting until the person on the other end picked up.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Mr. Kim. I have Lia Song on line one. She's calling to say that she will be out today for another emergency."

"Another one?"

"Shall I transfer the call so you can speak to her yourself?"

"Yes please."

The secretary smiled to herself as she moved to make the call transfer. She wasn't a vindictive person, but she liked being right.

She had been put on hold.

Panic began to set in as Lia kept the phone tucked against her ear with her shoulder as she dug out a can of broth. Yeontan yipped behind her, causing her to turn and see that Jin had made his way to the bedroom doorway; his face pale and covered in a sheen of sweat as he looked over at her.

"Lia, you don't have to..."

"Get to bed," she ordered as she walked back over to him.

Just as she was using her free hand to guide Jin back towards the bed, she was taken off hold.

"Miss Song, are you alright? I heard you aren't coming in today due to another emergency."

Oh crap. That wasn't the secretary's voice anymore. That was Mr.Kim. That conniving snake. Lia never did like that secretary.

"I'm fine," said Lia as she yanked the covers back once reaching the bed, pointing at Jin to get under them.

"But Lia, I'm fine. I don't need to rest..." said Jin as she quickly moved out into the other room.

Lia hoped that Mr. Kim hadn't heard Jin's voice as she shut the bedroom door behind her.

"Then what's the emergency if you're fine?"

"Family issue," she said. "It came up suddenly. I'm really sorry. I didn't intend to miss work again this quickly."

"It's alright, Miss Song. After all, things do happen when we least expect them to."

She hung up shortly after that, deciding to push any worries that were roaming around in her head aside as she moved to attend to Jin. Meanwhile - Mr. Kim stared at the phone in his hand long after Lia hung up; the beeping sound of a disconnected call echoing through his office. He thought for sure he had heard his son's voice in the background of the call just then, but that couldn't be right. Looking towards his screensaver, he stared at his son's smiling face; feeling a pain in his heart again at the sight. He knew the anniversary of his disappearance was coming up, so he figured that his grieving mind was just making him hear things.

At the same time, he was worried about Lia. She had been acting uncharacteristically off the last few days. He knew that she hadn't been working for them long, but she didn't seem to be a person that would duck out of work without a good reason. Standing up from his desk, he walked out to where the secretary was seated. She swiveled slightly in her chair to face him as he came her way.

"Do we have an address listed for Miss Song?" Mr. Kim asked. "I want to pay her a visit to check on her."
