22. Confusion
"Lia..."
He whispered her name as his lips slid into place over hers again as the two of them remained on the couch. She wasn't entirely sure who was kissing her, but she fell into the kiss back. Lia kissed her mystery man for a while before pulling back to look at his face. She saw Taehyung sitting there, smiling at her.
"Thank you for being here," he said as he moved to press a kiss to her cheek and then her jawline.
"Any time Tae..." she whispered.
"What did you call me?"
"Tae. You told me to call you that from now on."
She felt the kiss stop by her ear, watching as the head pulled back. Only now it wasn't Taehyung that was looking at her but Jungkook. His eyes broiled with anger as he stared at her; his jaw clenched. Lia felt her heart jump into her throat.
"I'm not Tae. Why did you call me by Taehyung's name?"
The anger that came from his voice made Lia start to panic. She hurt Jungkook and she didn't even know how to explain her actions.
"I thought you loved me. Are you seriously going to shack up with Taehyung over me?!"
Lia tried to open her mouth to respond, but the words failed her. Jungkook moved to stand up from the couch he was sitting on, marching towards the door. When Lia tried to get up, she felt like her entire world began to tip upside down; the room turning sideways and knocking her off her feet.
"Wait! Don't leave!" she was finally able to say. "I'm sorry..."
The only one that seemed to be unaffected by the room turning upside down was Jungkook. He had made it to the front door of her apartment and had it open, turning to look back at her just as she slipped onto the ceiling; the room finally coming to a stop.
"Goodbye Lia," Jungkook said in an ice cold voice; slamming the door behind him.
Lia's eyes shot wide open; her breathing heavy as she woke from the nightmare that her guilt-riddled brain had fed her.
'It was just a dream,' thought Lia as she closed her eyes. 'It wasn't real.'
When she had allowed herself to settle down, she opened her eyes again. She was confused for a moment when she realized she wasn't in her bedroom. Soon her brain caught up with the program and her blood froze when she remembered where she was. Light from the window streamed under the curtain and across the floor. She had overslept the alarm and was still in the wrong apartment. That had to mean...
An arm was still draped over her as she turned her head sideways to see Hobi's sleeping form there. His eyes were still shut as he slept. Taehyung was nowhere in sight. She never thought they were lying, but this had been the first time she had been around to see that the man she had been with the day before was gone.
Lia knew that she couldn't get caught by Hobi when he woke up, sure that Jungkook told all the boys that she was his. Moving slowly, she untangled herself from the arm that Hobi had about her waist, moving to grab her clothes up in her hands as she made her way towards the door. As she opened the door of the bedroom and slipped out, she saw Yeontan running about in the kitchen. She shut the door behind her as Yeontan yipped and came racing her way.
"Shh..." she said, trying to hush the excitable puppy.
As she walked over to go pick up the shirt Yeontan liked to sleep on, she noticed that he had been the source of the bang that had waken her up. Somehow this morning he had knocked the television remote off the stand and onto the ground along with a round bluetooth speaker. Lia walked quickly over to it, picking it up and trying to make it look as if nothing was out of the ordinary. Just as she moved to scoop Yeontan and the shirt up in her arms, she heard the bedroom door open behind her.
"Lia?..." she heard a semi-sleepy voice say.
Turning her head, she saw that Hobi stood in the doorway to the bedroom. His hair was sticking up a bit from sleeping; one fist balled up to rub at his eye as he let out a yawn. He brought the fist away from his eye as he looked at her, completely confused as to what she was doing in their apartment.
"What are you doing here?" he asked as she remained frozen there.
"I...uh...I was just visiting with Taehyung last night and lost track of time."
That wasn't entirely a lie, but she could see that Hobi was skeptical about it, especially seeing her wearing some of Taehyung's clothes.
"Did you two...?" he asked, letting the question die out as he turned to look back at the bed behind him.
"No, no!" she said quickly; her cheeks flaming red. "We didn't."
Hobi turned back around to face her, not saying anything for a moment as he looked at her.
"Well, even if you did, it wouldn't bother me," he said with a shrug of his shoulders. "One of us had to get lucky eventually."
Lia wondered why Hobi would respond like that instead of automatically falling on Jungkook's side. As she thought about it, it was then that she remembered that he probably didn't know about her and Jungkook yet because it hadn't been Tuesday again since Jungkook had asked her out.
"Why don't you stay for breakfast at least since you're already here?" suggested Hobi as he walked towards the kitchen. "I can make you something before you have to leave for work."
Work. Lia had completely forgotten about that with everything else going on.
"Oh shoot! Hobi, what time is it?"
Hobi turned his gaze from the bread box to look at the clock on the microwave beside him.
"It's almost 9."
"SHOOT! I'm gonna be late," she said.
Leaving work early yesterday and showing up late today would definitely not be a good impression for her boss. She dropped the shirt Yeontan slept on as she moved quickly towards the door with her clothes in hand.
"I'll have to take a rain check on the breakfast, Hobi. I'm gonna be late. Maybe we can just have breakfast for dinner."
"Alright, sure," he said, barely able to get the answer out before she left, slamming the door behind her.
Hobi looked at the closed door for a moment before turning his attention back to the bread he had pulled from the bread box. Something had to have happened between her and Taehyung last night. He just didn't know what. He was sure that he'd find out when he looked at the binder though, figuring Taehyung probably left him a note about it.

"I'm sorry I'm late," said Lia as she approached the front desk.
She had tried to shower and change quickly once she got back to her apartment, doing so in a manner that would have put a quick change artist to shame. Still - by the time she got to her job - she was still fifteen minutes late. The secretary looked up as Lia brushed past her with a quick apology.
"Mr. Kim would like to see you," the secretary said.
Lia froze when she heard those words leave the secretary's lips, thinking for sure that she was about to be fired. Taking a deep breath to try to steady herself, she moved down the hall towards his office. Like yesterday, his door was half open. She knocked on the frame and waited for him to bid her entrance before she stepped inside.
"Please have a seat, Miss Kim."
She sank down into the chair in front of his desk; her heart hammering in her chest as he looked right at her.
She was fired. She just knew it.
"I'm sorry for being late, sir. I promise I'll try and be more punctual in the future."
"Is that why you think I called you into my office?"
"Isn't it?" asked Lia as she forced herself to lock her gaze on his.
A small smile broke across his face then - and for the first time - she could see the similarity between him and Jin. He shook his head as he leaned back in his chair.
"I was calling to follow up on your emergency from yesterday. I wanted to see if things were okay."
"Oh," she said, not able to hide the surprise in her voice, "Everything is fine now."
"That's good to hear," he said. "I saw you leave with a gentleman yesterday. Was he part of your emergency?"
"Yes," she said, trying to fight the blush that wanted to rise to her cheeks at the renewed thought of Taehyung.
"What's his name?" asked Mr. Kim.
She was debating whether or not she ought to tell him. Now that she knew they were all missing men that were presumed dead, she was worried that Mr. Kim would find out about them and their secret. She didn't know what role - if any - Mr. Kim played in all of this. Lia had to protect them. However, she already knew that she put her foot in her mouth even saying that she was with him yesterday.
"He's just a friend," said Lia.
Mr. Kim looked at Lia. The silence was deafening and just heightened Lia's anxiety. Eventually he just nodded his head, gesturing his hand towards the door.
"Well, I've taken up enough of your time. You ought to get to work."
"Thank you sir," she said, quickly standing up from the chair. She bowed her head towards him before quickly escaping out of the room and to her work area; Mr. Kim watching her go.

By the time work was done for the day, Lia was tired. She wanted nothing more than to go home and curl up in her bed to sleep. Lia knew that she couldn't though, having promised Hobi earlier in the day that she would come for dinner.
"Why did you do that you knucklehead?" she asked as she walked up the stairs of the apartment building, going towards the neighboring apartment.
She reached out a hand to knock on the door, hearing Yeontan's happy yips from the other side. Hobi opened the door shortly after her knock, opening it up wide for her.
"Come on in," said Hobi as he stepped aside so she could enter, shutting the door behind her.
Lia could smell something cooking in the air; the scent making her mouth salivate and her empty stomach rumble. In her haste to try to make it to work on time, she had forgotten to pack anything to eat and had ended up skipping lunch. She watched as Hobi moved to walk back into the kitchen; Lia bending to scoop up Yeontan into her arms before following him.
"Whatever you're cooking smells delicious," said Lia as Hobi stood in front of a frying pan on the stove.
"Thank you," he said, turning his head aside as he sneezed into the crook of his elbow. He sniffled a bit as he brought his head out from his arm, turning to grab a spatula to check the underside of the omelet he was making.
"Are you okay, Hobi?"
"Yes, I'm fine. I think I just added too much pepper to it."
Hobi soon finished with his cooking, slipping the omelet onto a plate before handing it to her. He made another one for himself before joining Lia on the couch. Lia had put Yeontan down to be able to eat and he instantly ran to the shirt on the ground, circling in it a few times before settling.
"Thank you for cooking, Hobi," she said as she shoved a bite into her mouth.
"You're welcome," he said as he took a bite of his own food.
When he swallowed, he looked over at her.
"Lia, can I ask you something?"
"Sure Hobi," she said, "What is it?"
"Are you an item with Taehyung or an item with Jungkook?"
The fork that she had been bringing to her mouth froze in mid-air as the panic set in again. Hobi could see her panic, putting his own fork down as he patiently waited for a response. When he didn't get one, he decided to continue.
"I read the binder after you left. Jungkook had left me a message that said you were going on a date with him this coming Thursday," said Hobi, "But you were with Taehyung last night, right? Was it really just as friends?"
Lia sighed as she leaned forward to set her omelet plate aside.
"I am going on a date with Jungkook this week," she said, "And what happened with Taehyung last night...I don't know. Please don't leave a note and tell Jungkook though."
"So you want me to lie?"
"Not lie. Just..."
"Because lying is never a good thing," interrupted Hobi. "That'll just make things worse. If something happened between you and Taehyung, I think you owe it to Jungkook to be honest."
Before Hobi could say anything more, he turned his head aside to bury it in the crook of his elbow again as another sneeze took over him.
"I will. I'll tell Jungkook," she said as Hobi turned back to look over at her. "Just let me be the one to do it. Please."
"Alright," said Hobi as he resumed eating. "Besides, it'd be better if he heard it from you anyway."
Lia nodded as she moved to continue eating. She wasn't looking forward to the confrontation that would inevitably happen when she told Jungkook, but she knew she would have to. All Lia hoped was that it wouldn't end up like her nightmare. When she was done eating, she helped Hobi clean up before leaving him for the evening; Yeontan buddled in the shirt in her arms.
When Lia got back to her apartment, she made sure Yeontan was situated before going to her bedroom. Even though it was still early, she was exhausted and was ready to call it a night. When she entered her bedroom, she saw the clothes that Taehyung had let her borrow last night on a pile on the floor. She had dropped them in her haste earlier in the day.
Bending to pick the shirt up, she brought it to her nose. It still smelled like him. Even though she knew she shouldn't, she changed into those clothes to sleep into. She put Jungkook's necklace on her bedside table beside Taehyung's bracelet, looking at them beside each other in the lamp light as she slipped under her covers. She laid on her side staring at the two objects for a moment before reaching out a hand to shut off the light; letting her confusion drown in darkness as she fell asleep.
