13. Cooking Up A New Friendship
The next morning as Lia woke up and left her apartment for work, she didn't see hide nor hair of anyone. Lia began to wonder if whoever this last person she was meant to meet was as much of a shut in as Yoongi. Making sure Yeontan was properly situated before she left, she decided that she couldn't waste her energy thinking about it. She had to focus instead on this new job. These boys couldn't distract her from it. She needed this to prove to her family back home that this new start wasn't the start of a new mistake.
Lia had barely gotten to work when her boss asked to see her in his office. She knew she hadn't done anything wrong, so she shouldn't be alarmed by him summoning her in, but the butterflies were still there all the same. She mentally tried to calm herself down as she knocked on his door and stepped inside once his booming voice echoed out for her to enter.
The entire office was something that belonged in a magazine called OCD weekly. Everything was arranged on glistening glass shelving. Pictures and degrees hung on the various sea gray walls. The floor to ceiling windows that were behind her boss's desk caused the sun to shine in and bounce off every available service while also giving him a view of the world outside. He was seated behind his desk with his fingers steepled in front of his lips; his gray hair neatly slicked back and parted. The black suit he had on was without a wrinkle.
"Have a seat, Miss Song."
Lia did as she was asked to, walking herself across the cream colored tiles to have a seat in a chair in front of his desk. Seated in front of his desk, she had a better view at what was on it. Some miscellaneous files for approval for the next edition of the magazine sat off to the right of the desk; his laptop off to the left. His laptop was currently open with the lock screen on. Her eyes looked at the screen, noticing that it was him with a smiling boy who looked to be somewhere in his twenties. They looked like they were at a lake fishing; each of them holding up what appeared to be a giant tuna.
"Is that your son?" asked Lia, chiding herself for asking the question the moment it left her mouth. It made her sound like such a snoop.
Surprised by the question, it took a minute for the man to track her gaze to his laptop's lock screen. He gave a paper thin smile before reaching out a hand to shut the laptop.
"Yes that was my son."
Was. Lia gulped as she ran her hands over her thighs to keep them from slicking up with sweat.
'Way to go and not only be nosy, but flub up so badly in front of someone you were trying to impress,' Lia thought.
"I'm sorry."
"It's fine, Miss Song. You didn't know. It shows you're quite observant."
"Well, thank you Mr. Kim..."
"What else do you observe?" he asked, cutting her off before she could say anything more.
Lia cast her eyes about the office again, trying to rehearse her answer before she let it leave her lips.
"I see a man that is very disciplined and organized."
"Why do you say that?"
"The degrees. The way your office is organized with everything being in a proper place..." Lia trailed off, forcing herself to look back at Mr. Kim. "This can't be the reason you called me in here though."
"No, it's not. You're a very keen observer, Miss Song. You'd make a great reporter."
She felt a flush sneaking across her face as she clenched her hands into the material of her jeans.
"Well, thank you sir."
"Maybe someday you'll think of becoming a writer for our magazine," continued Mr. Kim. "Keep that in the back of your mind."
"Are you saying that because you're going to fire me from my current position?" asked Lia.
Mr. Kim chuckled, shaking his head.
"Of course not. Absolutely not. I just wanted to call you in because I've been hearing rumors around the office of you bringing men to sit in my waiting room all day. A waiting room that is supposed to be for clients only."
Lia felt her heart thrumming faster in her chest, watching as the man's eyes locked in on hers.
"Look, I like you Miss Song, but I just bought this company about a year ago. It was going under and I'm trying to save it. You bringing in various men to lounge about in a place of business is not alright."
"I'm sorry," said Lia with a quick head bow. "I'll talk to them."
"It's fine. I just...who are these men of yours?"
The question seemed odd to Lia as she looked at Mr. Kim again to see he was studying her.
"They are just some new friends I made," said Lia. "As I said, I'll tell them to wait for me outside of work."
"Very well. Thank you Miss Song. You're dismissed."
She nodded as she rose from the chair. He gave her a few papers to file on her way out the door, and she hugged them to her chest as she moved back to her desk to get to work. Lia was still so high strung from the encounter that lunch came around and she didn't even realize it.
"Miss Song," said a woman as she paused in front of Lia's desk, causing her to look up. "You have a visitor with a delivery."
Puzzled by this, Lia moved to get up. She walked to the front desk where a man with dusky gray hair stood. The gray hair made him look distinguished though his face was quite younger and handsome. He was holding a small microwaveable container in his hands as he looked about the place where he stood. As Lia approached the desk, his eyes landed on hers; a smile lighting up his face.
"Hello," said the stranger as Lia stood in front of him. "Here. I made you lunch."
"Thanks?" said Lia as she reached out her hands to take it. "And you are..."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I'm Jin," he said with another grin.
He was so boisterous and happy. Though Lia had never seen him before, he looked familiar for some reason. She moved to peek at the food that was hidden under the lid; the amazing aroma wafting up to greet her nose.
"What is this?" asked Lia as Jin explained to her what it was.
"Bibimbap," said Jin. "I just made it this morning, so it's fresh. I thought you might like some before I refrigerate what remained. It's why I didn't say hello to you this morning."
"So you're my neighbor," said Lia. This was Wednesday.
"Yep," he said with another grin. "I have to stop off at the market for some more supplies, but I'd like to also invite you to dinner tonight. I'd like to get to know you like the others."
"Sounds like a plan," she says. "But do you mind if I bring a dog over?"
"Tae mentioned Yeontan. I'd love to meet him," said Jin. "That's absolutely fine."
Lia kept the container close to her as she waved goodbye to Jin, watching him slip out of the door to go to the market. It wasn't until she was seated back at her desk that she realized why he looked so familiar.
Jin was the person standing with Mr. Kim in his desktop lock screen picture.
