The Amazing Water Family
The first thing Kat B. Waters did when she woke up in the morning was avoid her little brother and his fish.
Julian was a weird little kid. He had won a goldfish in a fair (yes we've all been to those fairs) four years ago. Since then all he wanted to do was carry him around the house like the proud seven year old he was. I personally did not want to see his fish, which he had affectionately named Bruno, and mom made him put it back into the tank after a while.
Today she was having no such luck.
Being two years older than him made her his idol, which meant she was always having that silly fish pushed into her face. Which also happened to be today.
"Look Kat." She smelled fish and felt her stomach go all queasy.
"Not right now Julian, I have school." She answered, pushing away his hand and and hefting her back pack over her shoulder.
"Katty." He whined.
Water was sloshing all over the floor and the small fish had a worried look in his eye. Kat knew if the little kid wasn't careful he would slip and-
Julian feet went out from from under him and Bruno went flying. Kat's hand shot out and she caught her brother by the arm, but he nearly took her down to with his weight. Julian instantly cast a forlorn look around, staring with teary eyes at the water all over the floor.
"Where's Bruno?"
She looked around, spotting a small orange blur in the sink behind Julian. Upon further investigation she discovered the gold fish swimming angrily around in the basin, which was thankfully filled with water and dirty dishes.
"Here he is," Kat comforted, scooping up the fish in a cup.
Julian giggled at the sight of his fish. "There you are silly Bruno."
"Let's go put him back in his tank, alright Jules?" She asked, holding the cup of water out of his reach.
"Okay Katty."
She poured the water and the fish back in his fish tank and watched as Bruno flicked his tail in a grudging matter. That fish seemed to have almost human personalities sometimes.
She sighed again and started for the door. She was late for school now, but when she opened the door she was surprised to find the world was covered in a tall layer of white.
"What the?" Kat gasped.
"Snow!" Julian gasped and instantly ran forward to dive into the freezing frozen water.
"Hold on there Jules." Mom walked up the drive way and turned him around before he could catch his death of cold.
"Does this mean no school?" Kat squeaked, already dropping her bag and running to the closet for her jacket.
"Yep, school is cancelled, you two have fun." She laughed.
A few minutes later nine-year old Kat was digging in on of the huge snow drifts besides her house. She was small enough that she house fit inside the igloo house she had made for herself. It was warm inside and she and her brother huddled laughing to themselves.
"We're like snow people." said Julian.
"Yeah, let's go outside and hunt for food." Kat suggested, crawling on her hands and knees towards the door.
Outside, more kids had started to play outside. Kat pointed towards a stray dog that was wandering down the streets.
"There's a fish, that's our dinner." She suggested.
Julian frowned. "I don't like to eat that kind of fish."
She ruffled his hair. "We don't have to eat him, we just have to catch him."
"Oh, okay then."
And that's how she spent her day.
