Missing Heir | d.o.s.

Age of Bronze, year 1287

(Can I also say this is no longer canon)

    I hated funerals.

Especially when the empty casket was supposed to hold my daughter's rotting corpse.

But, no. They hadn't even been able to find her body. I growled softly under my breath, no one would understand why I was in such agony. Because she wasn't supposed to be born. My husband had no idea the real crime he had committed by taking my hand in marriage, no one did. Because to every other human on this Skylark forsaken rock I looked just like them.

"Mommy?" There was knock at the door. I wiped my eyes and smiled a bit, patting my lap as a small boy with black hair shuffled slowly towards me. He was almost a year old and looked just like me, a wild mop of hair that was as black as the oil in the dim lamps that lit the room. He looked up at me with his wide, vivid blue eyes into my own green ones. I bit my lip and caressed his face.

My daughter had been his twin. She's had the same raven black hair, the same eyes.

"Mommy where is my sister?"

I squeezed my eyes shut and felt my hot tears roll off my face and onto the floor. They made hissing sounds and steam rose off the carpet. It wasn't normal, I know, but I was feeling so emotional it was getting hard to control my magic.

"Lazaro my son, why don't you go play with Kylo? Mommy's not feeling well." I said to him, he nodded and waddled off.

I sighed heavily and walked out to my balcony. I yelled at a midwife that I was leaving my room. Then I stepped out onto the moonlit balcony. I hadn't had the stomach to go to her funeral, not when I knew the casket was empty. I could see the small procession going on beneath me, it was a good thing it was night, otherwise I wouldn't dare such an endeavor. For the first time in eighty-four years I shifted back into the body I had been hatched in.

A few minutes past, then I sprung off the balcony and spread my huge, black, leathery wings and soared off into the air. Hoping beyond hope my little girl was waiting for me somewhere up in the bright sky of stars I was staring at.

I flew for a long time before nearing a small mountain that looked like a dragon had taken a chunk out of it. The flat side of the cliff had dozens of small holes that butted up against the rainbow colored grass. I banked and cruised past them. Sniffing for a certain scent and looking for the chunk of pitchblende that always marked the doorway.

There is was, the dark rock was always there. I tilt led in and folded my wings. Landing roughly on the floor. It had been a while since I had flown, or landed, but you know what they say, once you learn you can never forget.

"You have a lot of nerve showing up here Ree." A deep gravely voice said from the dark of the cave.

"If I'm not welcome here, I'll just leave," I answered, flicking my black tail across the dusty floor.

A deep blue face littered with scars lumbered out from the back of the cave. He had orange eyes that glowed faintly in the semi-darkness. He still had that elegant curve in his neck and strong arms.

"What's wrong? The Ekiria I know would never back down from a challenge." He rumbled sweetly as he settled down on the cool stone floor next to me.

"It's our clutch Deseir, I gave birth to twins. I swear they were both healthy until Zara start to get sick..." I swallowed another sob, trying to hold back from another wave of tears.

He made a soft purring sound and rubbed his head against my cheek. I felt the hot tears fall from my face, sizzling, for dragon tears are hotter than normal.

"She was so beautiful Day, so young." I sobbed helplessly.

"What about the other?" His voice cracked and pained with emotion.

"A boy, I call him Laz. He's small, but I love him so much. He doesn't show a single hint of being anything but human Day."

"That's good for now, your life is still in danger my love."

"I know, but you should see how much the kingdom has changed for the better." I sniffed, wiping the shining tears off my face.

He rumbled softly in agreement. I looked up the stars as the night went on by.

She was still out there, I knew it.
