Link
There was a wolf in my house.
I could tell because I could smell her. I had just been casually doing my homework when Korra's foresty scent floated up to my nose.
Then I panicked, because I had clearly told her to meet me tonight. If my foster parents saw the wolf that had probably snuck in through the door they always left open, I wouldn't let out on my own for weeks. Trust me, certain nights every month I was not a nice guy to be around.
I dropped my pencil and dashed downstairs. The she was, a huge corn-colored wolf sniffing at the couch. The front door open behind her and letting in cool breezes. Curse their decision not to buy an AC.
"Korra!" I sighed.
Her ears perked up when she saw me. "Link! Your den is very strange."
I glanced around the corner, Phyllis was making dinner in the kitchen, if it was meat I might have to grab a snack before heading out. She glanced over this way and I instantly threw myself in front of Korra.
"You'd better be done with your homework Link, and make sure to go back and check all your answers, twice, I still haven't forgotten the refrigerator incident." She warned.
"Of course! I was just getting back to it!" I waved my hand in the air to distract her from the wildly sniffing black nose.
"Come on!" I tried to push her up the stairs, hoping Phyllis wouldn't come and investigate.
"Link-"
"Sh!"
Her ears went back and she refused to move. "Link something's happened back in the woods, we need your help."
I stopped. "I have about an hour till moonrise, is it urgent?"
She nodded, using human gestured just for my sake. I bit my lip and headed for the door. Reaching for my coat and shrugging it on.
"I'm going for a walk!" I shouted, following Korra into the woods by our house. I didn't hear her reply, but it wasn't like she could stop me. Though knew I would be hearing about this later, from Phyllis and from my teacher when I failed the class.
I tried not to shiver when Lobo Fantasmas, ghost wolves, started to come into view. They were never close to my house, and the the further into the forest I got, the more there were.
I was the only one who could see them. I had gotten used to it, but they were still creepy, with their hollowed out faces that resembles skulls with glowing eyes. Their fur was white and glowing blue symbols floated around their paw prints.
Korra actually walked through one, it yapped at her and floated on. She of course was completely oblivious to the creatures around her, and I was careful to avoid them myself because I had found out the hard way walking through a Fantasma was not a nice experience.
"What kind of emergency is this exactly?" I asked again.
"Libra started poaching from the farmers again, and now she's been shot." Korra face twisted with concern.
I started running to keep pace with her. This was not good, I could not have one of my best hunters injured. Though I would be much faster one four paws, there wasn't much I could do about that.
We reached camp in roughly thirty minutes. Ren, our healer, was watching over the rust colored she-wolf who was breathing hard on a bed of feathers and pine needles. I bit my lip and crouched down to examine her.
"Give me a run down." I ordered, Ren shook his brown fur and started listing her ailments.
"I managed to get the bullet out and applied some salve, but I'm pretty sure she cracked a rib falling down a hill on her way here."
I nodded and placed my hands on her sweaty chest, there was indeed a small fracture in a rib. Don't ask me how I knew, I have a way with wolf bones.
I breathed in sharply through my nose and let it out, pushing the buzzing power from my fingertips and let it melt into Libra's fur. There was a small pop! Then she started to struggle.
"I could of... I could have lived without your help." She wheezed.
"Uh huh, sure you could've." I replied dryly.
Ren held her down, wolves are usually a bit drowsy after any bone mending I do.
After checking my watch, I realized I would not make it back before moonrise. I texted Phyllis that I was sleeping over at Tim's and waited till the clock stuck nine.
Tonight was a full moon.
