Infiltrate

I never thought I'd see a dragon in my life.

After the events of 1987 people were still shaking their heads at the thought. Dragons were undoubtedly appearing all over Amercia, where they were coming from, nobody knew.

Well, I knew, but that was a story for another time.

I also knew the U.S. had devised a solution to the problem. A school, to train older teens how to slay dragons, in order to protect their country. Adults don't have the same don't-jump-to-conclusions-dragons-could-be-real kind of thinking, so that's why kids were doing it for now.

That's also why I had to stop them.

"You sure about this? I won't be able to protect you in there." Tasha fussed.

I laid down on her scaly back, avoiding the wind as she glided steadily on the strong winds we had gotten since yesterday.

"Well, I can't just standby and watch as the army trains kids to kill dragons, that would go against the code." I sighed.

She snorted, spitting out smoke and sparks. "The code is dead, the book you have is from the homeland, in Skylark. There is no Dragon Code in the human world."

"But the dragons are from Skylark right? All dragons are."

My dragon was quiet now, I could sense she was confused and worried. It's a little special trick I benefit from being her human.

"That's what I don't understand Aaron, these dragons are feral, attacking humans even after the peace treaty was signed. Either something has happened in the time I've been gone, or they're under influence of a more powerful dragon."

I pondered her words while staring up at the sky. Large, puffy, dark clouds passed overhead. The perfect camouflage to hide Tasha's silver scales as she beat her wings up and down. Just for safety precautions I reached down to the bag I had strapped around her middle. Inside was a smooth and glossy blue oval the sise of a big cat. A dragon egg, we had been going across America searching for it's rider, if it had one. Even then it's possible the little guys's rider was back in the Drackardia, where the dragons came from, a completely different universe than earth's. My train of thought ceased as an icy fear crept over my connection.

Aaron, whatever you do don't make a sound.

Tasha's voice rang clear through my head, I could sense her fear and anticipation. There was something out there.

What? I asked.

I can smell another dragon nearby, he's big an angry. With the oncoming storm we might be able to escape his attention-

All of a sudden a huge red dragon slipped out from the cloud cover right above us. Tasha made a small eep! We instantly rose into the clouds, hoping he hadn't seen us.

We need to protect the egg! She cautioned, I slid back to rest a hand on it's smooth and silky surface.

There was a sharp growl from beneath us. Tasha's fear was spiking through my brain and feeding my own. If the older male tried to attack us, we would be doomed.

"Come join us." The dragon spoke, his voice was strangely deep, almost like a purr.

Tasha remained silent, not exactly sure how to respond. the red dragon repeated his message with the same tone.

"Join who?" She asked, sounded braver than I knew she felt.

"The Great Queen, she who rules all dragonkind." He replied in the same monotone voice.

"No thank you." She excused.

There was a deep growl again. "If you're not with us, than you are against us."

I gulped, that did not sound good. the older dragon let out a roar and Tasha yelped, I felt a sharp pain across my stomach. Except I was perfectly fine.

Tasha dropped from the sky.

I leaned forward, gripping her shoulders with my legs. Any other occasion and I would have enjoyed a free fall, you could live for that kinda stuff. Not when the huge red snout of the older drake nearly snapped on her tail.

"Humans!" He cried. "How disgraceful."

That was me he was talking about. I turned around and blew a raspberry at him. He snorted and his throat started to glow.

Fire hazard! Prepare to roll. I told her.

I felt the heat on my neck as Tasha rolled to the right and the drake's fire shot past us. It hurt, and I could feel her worry for me. It was instantly drowned as the egg started to come loose from it's pouch.

Pull up! I screeched.

She snapped open her wings and we shot up past the red dragon. She instantly started pumping them as hard as she could to get away from our attacker.

That was when the lightning started.

"Oh no," I groaned, pulling my hood over my head as the flash storm started and rain was pelting Tasha's scales. At least the drake could no longer use his fire without inhaling some rain water. I swiveled back to check on the egg, so far so good. We still had it, but Tasha was had been hurt in the tussle.

"Tasha." I tried.

"I'm fine, it's just a scratch, she assured, I could feel her getting dizzy from blood loss.

"You need to land." I ordered, she growled at me.

The red drake roared from below us, he had a bigger wingspan and was catching up.

"Tash-"

"I will not back down! I am Alpha!" She roared in protest.

With that, she stalled and in the pouring dropped like an arrow from the bow back down to the red drake. I considered slipping into the Samtvinnud to help her, but I needed to make sure we didn't lose the egg.

She ripped her claws into the back of the drake. Which didn't do much because of the hard scales on top. It made him angry and he followed us in the asending movement, lightning arched and cracked through the sky and I got a metallic taste in my mouth.

"Watch out!" I warned.

She roared, teeth flashing, and green eyes glowing with rage. Mine were probably glowing too, it's just what happens.

"Hang on!" She shot back, before flipping over upside down.

I pressed against her back while clinging on for dear life. She went for the soft scales on his underbelly and dug her claws in, swinging him around and letting go while he careened across the sky.

A bolt of lightning screamed through the sky and struck him, lighting up the dragon like a firework. Then he fell from the sky, landing with a thump in the grassy field, and he didn't get up again.

The rain let up again, all that was left was a bit of thunder. I sighed and relaxed a bit.

"Something wrong." Tasha growled.

I looked behind me and gasped. The eggs was gone!

"The egg!" I said, horrified.

"I can't see it." She cried.

We landed in the middle a rainy desert. Tasha was sniffing and digging around in the sand.

"The rain is washing away the scent." She informed sounding desperate.

After an hour of looking I was starting to get cold and wet, my arms wouldn't stop shaking and I was soaked to the bone. It didn't bother Tasha because she was covered in scales, but I was pretty sure I had fallen ill.

"Aaron, we need to rest, both of us."

I couldn't actually complain because she had held me down while creating a tent for me to sleep under with her wings. I was angry at first but then became to sleepy to care.

The next morning I woke up to the sweltering heat. We hadn't seen it last night, but there was a huge collection of buildings in the distance.

"It's the school," I realized.

"If we're this close, than they could have found the egg already." She suggested.

"I need to get in there. It's where we were going anyway."

She gave me a worried sigh. "Just be careful okay?"

"I always am."

I started walking towards the dragon slaying school.
