Flight

When your brother texts you, telling you he's having an emergency, generally this makes a family reunion necessary.

I didn't exactly rush over there. He was teenager, and emergency could mean anything. I could remember the time he freaked out because of a paper cut. I was not expecting, however, the unexpected.

The one I loved about my hometown during the holiday was the snow. My school in California never got snow, I had to drive a long ways to see my brother Matt.

As I pulled up into his driveway, I was not expecting to see him dressed up like and angel.

"Someone's getting into the holiday spirit." I mused, poking at the large white wings he had on.

He gave me a dry look. "They're real."

I snorted. "Uh huh."

"I'm serious," the look on his face was different than the usual touch-me-and-die.

The wings twitched and whacked me in the face. I spit out feathers while he apologized.

"Sorry, I can't really control them yet."

"So your not kidding? Stars above!" I pulled at one of the feathers, he jerked me away.

"Stop that!"

"You sure you should be out in the open like this?" I asked, poking him again.

"Oh sure, everyone's out christmas shopping," he shrugged, and starting walking down the sidewalk.

"You said you had an emergency?" I asked, confused as to why he was so calm.

"Oh yeah, I ran out of waffles and I need some cash."

"Seriously? You just grew wings and you're worried about waffles?" I asked.

He looked hurt. "They were really good waffles."

Snow had started to fall. "So what are you going to do with wings?"

He shrugged. "I dunno, learn to fly I guess, you know it's what I've always wanted."

"Yeah I guess you finally got your wish." I answered, staring at his wings.

"You remember that time I slept with glue on my hand and some feather got stuck to it? I thought I turning into a bird person" He laughed.

"Well, you were three." I pointed out.

"Still, and that time I tried to fly from that tree and broke my arm?"

"Yes, memories." I sighed. "Where are you going?"

He threw me a seriously look. "To the grocery store, I need you to buy me some more waffles."

Despite myself I smiled. "Only if you say please."

He got down on his knees dramatically. "Please! Dear sister I beg you, buy me some waffles!"

I ruffled his hair. "Okay okay, but you owe me."

His wings fluffed again when he smiled. "Come on, we have a store clerk to freak out."

The look that the cashier was giving us was unforgettable. Especially since Matt couldn't choose what kind off chocolate bar he wanted and his new wings kept twitching at random moments and knocking over stuff.

"Okay! I want this one." He placed his choice on the conveyer belt and the tip of is wing promptly knocked over a bottle on vitamins.

"Oop! I got that." he bent down and whacked me in the face again.

"Matt, watch your feathers."

He stood up again, and pushed a few gifts cards off a rack.

"You know what? Here's ten dollars, you pay and I'll pick this up." I suggested, handing him the money.

"Awesome, can I keep the change?"

"Sure buddy."

"Uh... anything else you need?" Asked the lady, staring at Matt.

"Nope! Merry Christmas!" He answered, and started to waltz out with his beloved waffles.

"That was fun!" He giggled between bites of chocolate.

I laughed with him. "So you're just gonna sing up for flying lessons now?"

"Or just walk around freaking people out." He grinned.

The snow crunched under my feet. I stuck my tongue out to try to catch a flake on my tongue.

"You never seem to worry over things do you?" I marveled, staring at him.

"Well no, not really."

He stopped and walked over to the edge of and old, dried out reservoir. I continued walking, but when he didn't follow, I back tracked and stood next to him. He just stared down while the wind pushed his hair away from his face.

"You know baby birds right?" I joked.

He broke from his trance and gave me a suspicious look. "Sarah! You wouldn't."

"Hey, anytime you need a push."

He smiled, then stared back down off the cliff.

"I think I'll start with the roof."
