Feather's Graditude | s.g.
For Feather, Thanksgiving was sort of a sombre holiday.
At least he didn't have to travel worldwide. Thanksgiving was a holiday only celebrated by Americans. So that made it less stressful. It was the memories of what Feather had done that made it more painful.
"Hey." Raven appeared next to him. "Stop being so downcast, that's my job."
He cast a sideways look at the unsettling figure beside him. Raven leaned awkwardly against the snow covered fence post with his huge black wings that stretched all the way to his ankles. He still wore his cloak, only so newbie's wouldn't see his face, which was cursed to look like a skull.
Not that Feather was off any better. He had feathers sticking randomly out out his skin, which gave him his name. He didn't always look like this, only closer to his holiday, and his name wasn't always Feather. He used to live here on this farm before he moved to the city. After he died his remaining family had moved back.
"I'm not being downcast." He complained weakly.
Raven raised an eyebrow at him. "You realize I can literally sense it."
Feather pursed his lips. He forgot about that.
"So what is it about this place? Or did you just choose some random fence in the middle of nowhere to come and mope during your holiday?" Raven was trying to make him smile, it was strange talent of his, considering his gifts.
"This was my home." Feather answered quietly.
"Oh."
It had been a few years. His mother had remarried and his half-brother had grown up. She didn't remember him, at least not in a sad way. He liked it better this way, but it was still bittersweet.
The door opened and a robust young teen stormed out. He was yelling angrily at the inhabitants within. Raven winced, Feather sighed, he had been waiting for this.
"Daniel wait!" He shouted across the field.
The younger turn whirled on him, his eyes cloudy with anger. His fist were balled up in anticipation of the fight.
"Who the heck are you? How do you know my name?" He growled tenaciously.
Feather wasn't shaken or stirred by the pure rage emanating from the young man. He calmly rolled his sleeves over a bare patch of feathers and waltzed closer. Daniel waited impatiently for the message. It was unnerving how calm Feather managed to be.
"You know it's Thanksgiving?" Feather started.
"If theres a point, you better get to it fast." Daniel replied.
"Do you know what you're thankful for Daniel? Are you thankful for your family? They want to share the evening with you." Feather, continued.
"Well now they can watch me leave!" Daniel started to turn.
"Are you thankful for your life?" Feather yelled at him.
Daniel stopped and turned back around.
"Are you thankful for the small things? For the turkey that gave it's life to be your next meal?" Feather was on a role now, as his speeches usually went.
"What're you saying?" Daniel responded quieter, calmer.
"Everything can change in a heartbeat Daniel, you should savor what you have."
It was then Daniel lost the ability to see Feather. He could still see himself of course, but Daniel couldn't.
He stood there blinking for a few seconds where the older teen used to be. Then he slowly turned around and started to head back towards the house. Feather could hear him apologizing to his parents. He sighed and turned back towards Raven, who was watching the whole thing with a slightly amused expression.
"I'll never understand how you do that."
"It's my aura, it's make people fall to their knees." Feather joked back, finally in a lighter mood.
"Aha! There's the little bundle of feathers we know and love! So does that mean you'll join us for dinner, Sunny's cooking."
"Oh goodness no! Remember the time he chased me around with a steak knife a couple years back thinking I was a real turkey?"
Raven chuckled. "Good times, you will be coming though right?"
"Sure."
