Chapter Twenty-Four

Rumple's POV|

I was outside of the Rabbit Hole yet again with Lacey. I have my foot on top of Dr. Whale's body. I decided to do something to him, the same thing someone did to me a long time ago. "Wait, wait, wait," said Dr. Whale. I pressed on him harder. I could tell Lacey was snickering.

"No," I stated. "If you don't kiss it, you're going to taste it anyway."

"Come on, Gold. I didn't do anything."

"You stared at her," I said, mentioning Lacey. "And I know how you think. So... kiss... my... boot."

Then all of the sudden someone grabs a hold of me. It wasn't until then that I realize it was Bae. Shit.

"What the hell are you doing?" Bae asked.

"Stand aside," I spat. "This doesn't concern you."

"No, go!" said Bae, motioning to Dr. Whale. Dr. Whale left.

"Let go of me!" I said.

"I'm surprised you didn't turn him into a snail," he said.

"A snail?" questioned Lacey. "What are you talking about?"

"Lacey," I turned to face her. "Why don't you go and wait for me in the shop? I'll be along shortly." I then toss her my keys.

"You're unreal, you know that?" Bae said. I looked at him. I immediately regretted everything. "You spend years looking for me. I come to town. You haven't even bothered to meet Tamara."

"Why should I concern myself with her?" I asked.

"We're getting married!" Bae yelled.

"That's never gonna last," I say. "Not as long as you carry the torch for Emma."

"You know, you haven't changed one bit," he said. My heart started to pump faster. This is not how I wanted things to go. This is definitely not how I wanted things to go. "For a second," he continued. "I thought you might have. I started to think, maybe you were worth my time. I guess I was wrong."

"And yet," I said. "You're still here."

"For Henry," he answered. "Not you. As far as I'm concerned, you can stay the hell away from both of us."

I sighed and Bae walked away.
It has seemed I had lost my son yet again. I had lost Liana and I had lost Bae.

                                 +++

I was now in my shop with Lacey. We were both drinking whiskey together. She was sitting on the counter and I was standing behind her.

But then I hear the doors jingle. Mary Margaret and David come in. I sighed.

"Sorry to interrupt the party," said David.

"Well I certainly don't remember inviting you two," I said. "We're closed."

"Not to us," said Mary Margaret. "We need your help. Regina's missing and we think she might be in danger."

"Just the way I like her," I replied. "Now if you'll excuse me—"

"No, I don't think so. Whatever your feelings about Regina are, you still owe me a favor," said David.

I then turned to Lacey. "Lacey, if you could excuse us, I have some business to attend to."

Lacey nodded. "Make it quick," she said, jumping off the counter and going into the back room.

I am looking through my many cabinets to find something like an elixir to help find Regina. "I'm sure I can whip up something to find Regina, but tell me, why do the Charming's want to help the Evil Queen?"

"Because I owe her," Mary Margaret replied. "After what I did to Cora."

I snickered on the inside. "Never underestimate the power of a guilty conscience."

I turned around to look at them, showing them a bottle filled with Regina's tears. "What is that?" Mary Margaret asked.

"This is one of Regina's tears," I replied.

"Why do you have one of Regina's tears?" asked Mary Margaret.

"Because I do," I answered. "This spell, however, requires two tears."

"You want one from me?" she asked. Mary Margaret sounded surprised.

"Well," I started. "Just think of a dark moment, dearie, something bleak and hopeless. I know you have a few."

I gave the bottle to Mary Margaret and then watched as she dropped a tear into the bottle. "Perfect," I said. "Now when you drop this into your eye, you will be connected to Regina wherever she is. Whatever she sees, you'll see. Whatever she feels, you'll feel."

"How long does the spell last?" asked David.

"Long enough to lead you to her," I said. "And with that, I've fulfilled my end of the bargain. Good-bye."

"Always a pleasure," David said sarcastically. David and Mary Margaret finally leave.

I closed my eyes for a second of peace before Lacey came back out. "So it's uh," Lacey cleared her throat. "So it's true? I heard everything. You uh, you really can do magic."

I opened my eyes and looked at her. "I think you might want to pour yourself another drink," I said. Lacey could not know about magic, no matter how much I wanted her to.

+++

I decided to fuck it and show Lacey my magic anyway. Because the real her, Liana has magic of her own. This might help jog her memories.

I was showing her a bunch of my potions that I have collected over the years. "So why didn't you tell me sooner?" she asked.

I couldn't tell her the whole-truth, so I told her part of the truth. "Because magic always comes with a price," I said. "Tends to drive away the people I care about most."

"Well, then you've been caring about the wrong people," she said. That is something Liana would say. She has to be in there somewhere. "What else can you do?" she asked.

With the flick of my wrists, I made a diamond necklace appear. I then put it around her neck after she moved her hair out of the way. "Anything. There are many perks to being The Dark One."

"Immortality being one of them, right?" she asked. I nodded. "Could you, uh, could you keep me young?"

"Yeah," I said.

"Cause uh, cause then we could be together forever. Nothing can keep us apart." My heart melted at what she had just said to me. It means one thing. Liana's feelings for me are starting to show. She still loves me. I was silent for a moment. Thinking that yes I could keep her young but there were consequences. "What?" she asked.

"Immortal means to live forever. It doesn't mean that one can't be killed. There was a prophecy that... someone might be my undoing."

"Do you know who that someone is?" she asked. I nodded my head, thinking of Henry. "Then get rid of them. Stop them."

"It's complicated. Something's standing in my way," I said. Which is true. I don't want to kill Henry. I admit that over the years, before I knew that he was my grandson, I began to care for him. Love him, even. But there is still the fact that he is my undoing.

"I thought you were a man who would never let anything stand in his way," she said.

I then stood straighter. "I am."

+++

I was now at the park, watching Henry on the swings. I realized that there was a sharp rock near by, and if the rope were to accidentally rip part, Henry could potentially be killed by it.

It was like this one part of me was taking control of the other part of me. I really didn't want to kill Henry. But the other part of me, didn't let me say no. So as I stood in the park, watching Henry, I began to magically use my hands to make the rope start to rip.

And then I saw that the Charmings arrived in the car. Great.

"Gold, what are you doing here?" asked David, approaching me.

"Well," I started. "My son made it clear I'm to stay away from him, so I'm spending some time with my grandson instead."

I watched as Mary Margaret turned to face Emma. They all looked quite grim. "Emma, it's okay. Why don't you talk to Henry, and we'll handle this."
Emma then walked over to talk to Henry.

"Mr. Gold, we have some news to share with you. And it's not good," she said.

"Not interested," I said.

"It's about your son," said David.

My heart jumped. "Yeah. What about him?"

"Tamara shot him," said David.

"What?" I questioned. The woman he was supposed to marry, shot him? Killed him? "He's dead?"

"They used a bean to open a portal. Neal was hurt so badly that he fell through. He's gone."

"Bae wasn't supposed to die," I said.

I still couldn't wrap around my head that I truly had lost Bae. "Greg and Tamara," said David. "They took something from Regina—a magical trigger. A fail-safe in the curse that could destroy StoryBrooke."

"If that activate it, it's self-destruct. Everyone not born in this world will die," said Mary Margaret.

"I know this is hard," said David. "But we need your help."

"No," I said.

"They killed your son in cold blood, and you don't want to stop them?" David asked.

"They didn't kill my son, I did," I said. I know I didn't physically kill him, but metaphorically speaking, I did. I pushed him away from me when all these years I was trying to pull him closer to me. "I brought magic to this world to find Bae. And now he's dead. Magic always has a price. And this-this is it. But I'm prepared to pay it."

"But... we'll die," Mary Margaret cried. "You'll die!"

"Well, I've made my peace with that."

I then walked away, heading towards the shop, I needed to wake up Liana so we could spend our last moments together.

+++

I was now In the pawn shop in the back room, looking for something to help Liana when I heard noises out in the front of the shop. I come out from the back to see that it was the dwarves. What could they possibly want now?

"A sure sign of impending doom," I said. "Looters."

Leroy picked up a decorated drinking stain. "It ain't looting if the stuff you find's already yours. We need Sneezy's drinking Stein. We can bring his memories back."

My heart jumped. "Oh, can you?" I questioned.

"Mother Superior finally figured it out," he said. "He needs to drink this." He showed me a bottle containing blue liquid. "Out of his old Stein— something important to him."

"So she found the solution to the memory problem? Today? In the Nick of time before we all die?" I questioned.

Mr. Clark then started to freak out. Just great. "Die? Who's dying?"

"She's been working on it all along. Then when she had to transform August back to Pinocchio, she found the ingredient she needed— a hair from Pinocchio's head. Someone who returned to who he should be. Someone who wasn't cursed."

"So," I said. "You're going to wake your friend up to tell him he's about to die?" I didn't see the logic.

"I don't want that!" cried Mr. Clark.

"Shut it Clark!" said Leroy. "He wants to know who he is and be with his family, no matter how much time he has left."

"Not if I'm gonna die!" Clark cried.

"Let's take him back to Granny's. Do it there," said Leroy. The others then left along with Clark who was still protesting.

I was confused as to why Leroy would stay behind. "I asked her to make a second dose. This is for you," he said, giving me the same bottle.

I took it. "What am I supposed to do with that?" I asked.

"Liana once helped remind me who I was. I've never forgotten. I wanna return the favor. Don't let her die as Lacey."

Leroy exited and Lacey came out from the back. "What was that all about?" she asked.

"Oh, it was nothing," I replied.

+++

"To the end of the world," I said, holding up my bottle of whiskey to hers. I could tell Lacey was hesitating. "Come on, it'll help numb it."

"I, uh, I'll drink to that," Lacey reached for her cup. But then it spilled. "Oh-I'm so sorry. Uh, here. I got it."

I didn't realize it until she started to do it. She grabbed my son's shawl and started to use it as a rag. "Stop! Stop! Put that down!"

"It's just an old rag," said Lacey. I gritted my teeth.

I snatched the shawl from her. "It belonged to someone very important. You wouldn't understand."

"I said I'm sorry," she said.

And then I realized what had to be done. I had to wake Liana up, I couldn't deal with Lacey anymore.

I walked over to one of the cabinets and picked out her chipped cup, well the pieces of it at least. I magically repaired it. "That cup again. What is it?" she asked.

"It's something from my past. From our past," I said. "And I'm sorry. Let's not fight." I then took the potion that Leroy gave me out of my pocket and poured it into the cup. I then gave it to Lacey. She sips it, and I watched as she regained her memories as Liana.

I tried really hard to fight back my tears as I said her name. "Liana."

Liana cried too. "Rumple." Liana jumped into my arms and I held her tight. She then leaned in to kiss me. How I missed her. How I missed this. Her lips tasted like strawberries. She then pulls apart from me and our heads touch. "I'm so sorry," I cried. "I didn't want to wake you up to die. But I needed you," I sniffled.

"Oh Rumple sweetheart, you lost your son. I am so so sorry sweetheart. I'm sorry. I love you."

She then grabbed a hold of me again as I sobbed into her neck. "I've failed. I've failed."
