Chapter Twenty-Eight

"What the hell was he talking about?" asked Neal.

I looked at Rumple who was trying to avoid this conversation. "Oh, don't mind him."

"He said you were gonna murder Henry!!"

"He plays games," spat Rumple. "Mind games. The important thing is we got the boy and and we got away."

"Where are we?" Neal asked.

"The other side of the island. We're safe here for the time being," said Rumple.

Neal walked over to Henry who was unconscious. He was under some kind of spell. "Hey, hey, Henry," said Neal, walking over to him. "It's me. It's your Dad."

"No, he... He can't hear you," said Rumple.

"Then wake him up," Neal ordered.

"Pulling him out of the spell would be dangerous," argued Rumple.

"Yes," I said. "I agree with that. I've been under the spell before. So um... he should wake up naturally in a few hours. Don't worry Neal, he'll be fine."

"All right," said Neal. "Then you two can explain to me what the hell Pan meant. This prophecy he's talking about, why would he say that you'd kill Henry?"

"Oh, I don't know," Rumple started. I glared at him. Lying only makes things worse. And I should know. "To create a wedge between us."

"That's not a denial," Neal sighed. "No, this has to do with what happened when I found you two. You," he looked at Rumple. "You thought I was a hallucination even though Liana saw me! You also said that you had to do the right thing and save Henry! What did that really mean?"

"Bealfire..." said Rumple.

I sighed.

"It's Neal!" Neal yelled. "Now stop dodging and tell me what's going on!"

"There was a seer, and she told me of a prophecy... that boy would help reunite me with you. And that boy... would be my undoing."

"Henry," stated Neal.

"I didn't know it was going to be my own grandson, till I found you in New York, and discovered you were his father."

"You were planning on getting rid of him, whoever he was, weren't you? To try and cheat fate? To get around the prophecy? You Cold-blooded son of a bitch. You were gonna kill him!"

"Yes," said Rumple.

"And you," said Neal, looking at me up and down. I froze in my place. "How could you go along with this? Were you two planning it together? Did you even know about it and are you just a pawn to his little game?"

"Neal," said Rumple, using his new name. "Stop. Say what you want about me, but don't go attacking her!"

"Yeah... yeah... you'll protect your little sex toy, but you won't protect your own grandson!"

I gritted my teeth. "Neal," I started. "I am no one's sex-toy. I am with your father through and through. And yes. I did know about the prophecy, but only found out about it recently. Listen to me Neal," I said. Neal then looked at me. "Your father has a darkness within him that he can't control."

"Yeah I know," he said. "I can see it as clear as day!"

"No. You don't understand. It's a physical darkness. It's matter. What your father says, Magic always comes with a price, it's true. He is suffocating, drowning in this darkness, wrestling with it, trying to beat it every single day. And yes, he was planning on killing Henry— which is absolutely horrible to even think about... but... he is leaning towards the right direction, he is going to save him. And that took a lot of hard work to come to this point.
Your father is a good man, Neal. I have seen him during his best and worsts moments. A long time ago, he even explained to me how and why he became the dark one. Truth be told, he was manipulated into becoming the dark one, thinking that if he had all this power, he could use it to protect his family, you. So..." I smirked. "Don't think that you understand what this is."

"You're right I don't understand," he spat back. Rumple and I locked eyes with each other before looking back at Neal. "So, both of you. Get back. You both stay away from him!"

"Like Liana explained, that was then. Things have changed. I... I didn't come to Neverland to hurt Henry. I came here to save him."

"After what you just told me, I'm supposed to believe you!?" Neal yelled.

I bit my lip. Rumple spoke again. "I don't lie to you, Bae. Self-preservation has been a nasty habit I've had my whole life, but I came here to break it, to do the right thing and save your son. Even if it meant sacrificing my own life." Rumple then whispers, "You have to trust me."

Neal the questioned, "How can I?"

"Tell me what I have to do to gain your trust, and I will," said Rumple.

I looked between the both of them. "Give me the Dark One Dagger. I know you. I know you wouldn't come all the way to Neverland without it. It's the only thing that can control you. It's the only thing that could stop you. You wouldn't take any chances with it."

"I don't have it," said Rumple.

Oh no. This isn't going to be good, I thought, as my stomach started to feel sick.

"Why you lying?" asked Neal.

"He's not lying," I said.

"Did you see him hide it?" Neal asked me.

I looked down at my shoes. "No."

"Exactly," he said. "No evidence."

"I'm not lying to you Bae," said Rumple. I hid it so Pan couldn't get it, so he couldn't stop me."

"So un-hide it!"

"My shadow took it," Rumple replied.

Neal laughed. "Your shadow. Man. You got an answer for everything, don't you?"

"I'm telling you the truth, I swear."

"You know, maybe you did come here to hide it. Maybe you do want to do the right thing. But that's today. What about tomorrow?"

"I've changed," said Rumple.

"Have you?" Neal asked. "Because Liana here says it's an ongoing fight between you and the darkness that lives within."

"Yes," he said.

"The prophecy still stands. You save him, he's going to be your undoing," said Neal.

"I'm still willing to die for him," said Rumple. My heart ached.

"What happens if we get back, you two are in your little happy relationship and you realize the only thing standing between you and your happy ending is my son?" he questioned. "And suddenly, undoing doesn't sound so great."

"You're my happy ending," said Rumple. "This is, because it's my redemption. I can be strong, son, if you have faith in me."

Neal lowered his voice. "You know, when I was living here and sleeping in a cave, I used to dream of you coming to rescue me. But then I'd wake up and remember how you left me behind. You left your own son behind for the power of that dagger. How can I think that things would ever be any different?"

I watched as Neal held onto Rumple's hand and then I heard a whooshing sound. Rumple was suddenly trapped, with the same magic that was going to trap Pan.

Oh no... if Rumple's trapped that means... I looked down. I could not move my body because of the blue energy surrounding me.

"You want to know the real reason why I left you behind?" Rumple asked.

"And what is that?"

"I was too scared. I was scared that if we both went into that portal and went to a realm without magic, I'd be like who I was without magic-back when we were all a family. I was a weak coward who ran from the ogre war. If we went to that new realm, then I wouldn't be able to protect you," Rumple explained.

Neal chuckled. "That's an excuse."

"It's not an excuse," Rumple said. "It's the truth. It's what I was feeling in that moment. I didn't want to leave you behind Bae. I tried to hold on to you, to grip on to you, so you could stay here in the Enchanted Forest with me. But you accidentally let go..." Neal shook his head and then went over to grab Henry. "Neal. What are you doing?" Rumple asked.

"I'm gonna find Emma and the others and get the hell off this island. Then I'm gonna get my family back home."

"You can't go into the jungle alone!" Rumple yelled after his son who was about to carry Henry into the jungle. "Without my power to protect you, Pan will capture you both!"

"I'm sorry," said Neal. "I got no choice. We're safer without you two. Goodbye, Papa."

I then watched as Neal took Henry into the jungle, and then I heard some faint crying from Rumple. All I wanted to do was hug him in that moment, to offer some comfort, but I couldn't. I was frozen, just like he was. And unfortunately we will be for a while.

                              +++

A few hours later, Rumple and I were no longer frozen. Rumple sighed deeply. "I'm so sorry Rumple, Neal should have trusted you," I said, walking up to him, and placing my arms around his neck.

"How could he?" he questioned. "After everything I've done?"

"Well..." I started. "He may not know what's in your heart... but I do. You would've protected Henry. You would've even given your own life to show Neal that you've changed."

"Are you asking me that Liana? Or do you truly believe that? After all, you did say it was an ongoing process, my love."

"I know it with all my heart, Rumple," I said. "What I don't know is why you look so upset now. I mean, Rumple, he's alive. Baelfire. You have something to live for. That has to be something, right?"

"But the prophecy remains," he said. "Henry's still my undoing."

"Oh. I get it," I said. "You're afraid to die because you finally have something to live for. Rumple... bad habits can be broken, can't they? I feel like they have thus far..."

"I'm sorry Liana," said Rumple. I furrowed my eyebrows. "Do you mind giving me some alone time? I don't want to talk right now."

"Of course sweetheart," I said. "I'll just sit on the log over there to get some rest."

Rumple nodded his head. Before I walked over to the log, I looked at Rumple in the eyes. "Hey, I love you."

Rumple weakly smiled at me, before replying. "I love you too."

Rumple then turned around and started to go for a stroll to clear his head while I flopped down on the log and started to think about what had just happened.

A/N: I'm sorry it's been a while guys! I keep forgetting about this story every now and then... whoops! But I hope you enjoyed this chapter! I tried really hard to give Liana her own lines... without it fully changing everything. In this scene I like how I could see both sides of the story. And this is exactly how I wish things went in the show, with Rumple sticking up for himself more. Again, thanks for reading! Don't forget to vote and leave a comment! <3 oh and tell your friends about it, lol
