Chapter Twelve

Liam watched as Everly's eyes rolled back and her body went slack. Frankie caught her before she hit the ground. His heart speed up and so did his feet as he hurried to his mate. Frankie let out a startled cry when Everly's body started convulsing. He panicked. He quickly removed Robbie's makeshift sling and handed the boy to Malcolm. He picked his mate up and ran to the infirmary. A six bedroom house they had converted into a small hospital. The front doors had been replaced with automatic sliding doors with bullet proof, and wolf proof, glass.
"Doctor O'Malley!" Liam's voice reverberated off the walls. The alpha command in his voice.

A shorter man with dark hair starting to turn grey and soft grey eyes rushed up to Liam. He didn't even spare him a glance before he was ordering his staff and whisking Liam's mate from his arms. She started to seize again when she was placed on the gurney and rolled away from him. His eyes were black. Ranger was not ok with them taking her like that, he was not ok with it at all. Liam kept a firm hold on his wolf. The doctor had to do his job. And he was just going to have to get over the fact that an unmated male had his hands all over their unconscious mate.
Ranger! Calm down! He is a medical doctor! You saw. Something is terribly wrong! His words seem to penetrate his wolfs red haze. He felt his muscles relax. His eyes were still black he knew. He may have a hold of his wolf but Ranger wasn't going to back down. He would be right there with Liam. Watching.

The doors slid open and his beta came rushing up to him. The baby had started to fuss. Ranger could feel the distress from the young pup. He growled softly and took the fussy infant from his brother. Placing the small body against his shoulder Robbie quieted. He turned his tiny head into Liam's neck. It shocked both him and his wolf when the baby seemed to inhale his scent before relaxing completely.

This tiny wolf was already bonded with him. It was the most amazing feeling. He had heard other parents describe the moment that their offspring recognized them as their parent. It forms a connection that is only severed through death. Usually the child is around a year old before the bond is strong enough to form. But not with Robbie. Liam could feel that tiny connection in his heart. His eyes widened and he made eye contact with his brother. He couldn't describe in words what was happening. So trusting his brother he opened the private mind link they shared and let him feel what he felt.

Malcolm's eyes widen in astonishment. He looked down to the dark haired infant that was now sleeping with his tiny face turned into his brother's neck. A parental bond had been made between a child and a father who were not blood. That just did not happen. Ever. He was in awe of the feeling of that little tendril of trust that linked his brother and this child. He felt like it was the most special thing he had ever had the privilege to feel. He looked from the sleeping baby to his brother. His eyes were also filled with tears. Malcolm wouldn't feel this bond with his own newly born daughter until later. Liam was suddenly filled with a faith in the moon goddess and her timing in a way he never had been before. He savored this connection he had with his son. Maybe not by blood but in every other way that mattered. This child wouldn't inherit the alpha title but he was meant for great things. Liam could feel it in his soul.

It had been over an hour and still nothing. Robbie was awake and Liam and he were just staring at each other. Blue eyes to dark brown ones. It was the oddest thing. The baby was "talking" to him. His wolf was old. Very old. And wise. He couldn't really communicate with words. They were, the baby and the wolf, both too young to express themselves in that way. But he had other ways, feelings and colors. Flashes of his birth. In his own way Robbie told him what it was like for his mother. Because that's how he knew things. Through her. All the times he'd been scared or saddened by her pain was because of what was happening to her. Pups are automatically born with a connection to their mothers wolf even if the connection couldn't be felt yet. It's how they gauge who to trust, who to fear, to always obey the alpha. Not Robbie though. The thought made Liam smile and he felt a bump of happiness through the hour long bond that had formed. He was admiring how much the child resembled his mother when the doctor came back.

He jumped up and felt Robbie jump a little bit he didn't cry. Liam felt pride. The baby trusted him. He could feel it. With worried eyes he looked at the doctor. His eyes had gone black. Ranger was listening too.

"She seized a few more times and then developed a fast rising fever. We had to give her an ice bath to force it down."

Liam's heart jumped with anxiety. He had to control himself and let the doctor finished.

"We've gotten that under control." Liam breathed a sigh of relief. "She's awake and seems aware and told me the baby's hungry." He smiled a little as he finished. "I'll take him to her if you want me to."

He didn't even bother answering. He headed straight for his mate following her scent. He needed to see her and so did Robbie.
