Chapter Nine

She couldn't help the bubble of laughter that burst out. She had been through so much. Lived through so much. None of it had broken her. She refused to let it. He was a monster. A wolf bent on power and dominion over all werewolves. Evil to the core. That kind of evil will be triumphed over. Good will win. She had a feeling it wouldn't be an easy win though. Looking into her mates brown eyes she felt a lightness she hadn't felt in so long. He was a wonderful mate. He brought her flowers even when the occasion wasn't special. Her eyes clouded with confusion. She hadn't known him long enough to know if he was a good mate or not. He damn sure hadn't gotten her any flowers.

He is our always and forever. Talie spoke softly. Her words confused Everly.
He's our mate. Of course he's our forever. She replied matter of factly.
Just remember. That's all you have to do. Talie sank back after her odd statement. Remember what? She wondered.

"Are you going to tell us what you did to the door?" Liam asked again. Her eyes had been slightly out of focus when she spoke to her wolf. When they focused on him he couldn't help but reach up and cup her cheek. The chill in the air made her skin cool. The heat of his palm warm against it.
"Well, I took a hammer and a flat head screw driver and popped the pins out of the hinges." Liam's eyes widened. Michael and Richard bust out laughing. "Then, I pulled the door until the door frame snapped. When he returned he knew I was gone as soon as he saw it. He never thought I would get out. The son of a bitch thought I was weak." She said the last through clenched teeth. Anger poured out of her. His beta and gamma suddenly straighten. Her rage seemed to be overpowering.

Suddenly the baby cried. She snapped out of her pain and rage. "Oh, Robbie. I'm sorry my love." Everly pulled the baby close and rubbed his small back. His tiny cries turned to whimpers. She felt him suckling on her neck. Undoing the first three buttons on the flannel she hesitated when a growl rumbled from her mates chest. She looked up. He wasn't looking at her, he was staring with black eyes and growling at an unmated male. His gamma. Though both men quickly looked away, turned on the their heel and walked ahead.
"I'm sorry Liam. I shouldn't have put you in a position like that." She hadn't been thinking about men seeing her breasts. She was only concerned with feeding her child. But she didn't want to put her mate in an uncomfortable position.
"Don't ever apologize for feeding my son. They just aren't going to be watching it happen." He stated. They continued walking with Robbie nursing greedily. The tug of his suction on her breast was a comfort she couldn't describe.

"Why don't you ever mention him by name Everly?" She knew that he was going to ask for his name eventually. It wasn't that she didn't know his name. It was that she knew him all too well. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction he seemed to get from the other women he had held captive when they begged him not to do what ever it was that he wanted. His name never passed her lips because he was of no importance. She never knew why she felt like that towards him. She was disgusted by his mere existence. He wasn't an ugly man. Green eyes. Auburn hair. Well built. Where it mattered, on the inside. Well, his insides were rotten. And she could always tell. Even before him she could tell. The other women had long been disposed of for she was the only one that had ever conceived. Even the ones before her had never resulted in pregnancy. She was the first one he used the injections with, the first experiment. She was sure that there were more. She'd overheard whispered phone conversations. He was planning something. Building something. She had to tell them everything. She delayed answering adjusting Robbie to her other breast. When she felt him latch she looked into Liam's beautiful dark eyes. His hair had a light dusting of snow. It had started a few minutes ago.

"Ferguson Payne." Liam's eyes went black. Steam rose from his body. His heat increasing as he fought a shift. She didn't know that it would make him this angry. The baby unlatched and started to cry. She backed up too quickly and tripped. She winced when she landed on her ass. She looked up at her mate, wide eyed, Robbie still crying. The beta and gamma suddenly appeared. Liam was still fighting Ranger for control. She could see his eyes shifting. Malcolm stepped in front on Everly and blocked Liam's view of her. Probably the worst idea ever.
