Chapter Five

She was so scared. He could reject her for birthing the child of another. Some packs punished the unmated females that became pregnant. But unmated, pregnant females didn't exactly happen. It was a rare thing that a wolf could produce a child with someone other than their mate. A lot more effort went into the conception of this child. She looked down at the tiny person she held. His hair was as black as her own. His eyes blue too. He was her image, thank the goddess for that. She looked at her mate who was busy cleaning up. The sheets she had laid on were ruined. He was gathering everything and getting it out of the way. He placed the bloody sheets and towels outside bundled together. He had already helped her clean up and get dressed. The baby was clean and wrapped in a soft blanket. She was sitting in the one chair with no top on. Her bra was gone too. Her infant son was latched onto her breast. She should feel uncomfortable but she wasn't. It was the strangest thing. The mate bond pulls you closer. Almost forces you to be near one another. It helps you forge a bond and grow to trust and love your other half.

This was different though. He was...her everything. She was comfortable around him. She didn't feel any doubt or anxiety about if he wanted her or not. She felt no shame in letting him see her body. It felt natural. Like she'd been breastfeeding their children so many times before. It was a truly odd feeling. Deja vu maybe? Like she had been here in this moment before. Shaking her head a little she looked back down at her nursing child. Worry again invaded her thoughts. She may not worry about her mates willingness to be with her. But would he accept this child? He had done nothing wrong.

When her mate stopped in front of her she didn't look up. He used a finger and ran it gently down the nursing baby's cheek. It made her heart flutter and she looked up. He was staring at the baby with so much love in his eyes she almost couldn't believe it. Was he really going to accept the child? "He is mine. You are mine." He said it fiercely. She looked into his eyes. She saw the truth. He meant every word. He wasn't going to reject her. He wasn't going to reject her son. Maybe things were starting to look up. She had a lot to tell her mate. Things that were important. But right now she had a son to nurse and she was so very tired.

She watched silently as he got clean blankets. He made a fresh pallet and motioned for her to come. She didn't bother to put a shirt on. There was no shyness between them. Only the comfort of the forever they had together. It honestly was the strangest feeling. It felt like more than just the mate bond.

He pulled her half naked body tightly against him. Her back to his front. The baby laying beside them. He wasn't asleep. Just looking. Trying to focus on things. "What's your name?" He asks her quietly. It felt silly after everything that they had just shared, that they didn't even know each other's name.
"Everly. What's yours?" She injected humor into her voice. He let out a quite chuckle.
"Everly...I'm Alpha Liam Black of the Red Dawn Pack. Do you not have a pack?" She tensed at his title. His arms tightened in response. Like he thought she would take the baby and run. She wouldn't leave but she was shocked. She was the mate of an alpha. That was a lot. And as to the comment about her pack. She didn't respond for a moment. "We have a lot to talk about Liam." He put his head in the crook of her neck and breathed in her scent. He relaxed against her.
"Rest. We'll be going home in the morning. We can talk then." She relaxed into his arms and looked at the little life beside her. She was holding him in her arms while her mate was holding them both. She knew he wasn't asleep either. They both just stared in wonder. He was so perfect and really did look just like her. She searched for a trace of the man that had helped make him but she couldn't see any features that resembled him. "What is his name?" Liam asked her. She didn't know. She hadn't really thought that far ahead honestly. Escape, survival and then birth where the only concerns she really had at the time.
"You name him." He was startled. She turned her head to look at him. He was looking at her with such a confused face. "He is yours. You said so. This is your first gift to him." She smiled. His dark eyes softened. He looked down at the sleeping boy. He took in all his tiny features. He thought for a moment before he replied. "Constantine. Constantine Robert Black." It was really a good, strong name. She loved it. Looking at the baby she could tell it was a perfect name. She drifted into a peaceful sleep. Her body, heart and soul finally at rest. Not even when she was younger had she felt such wholeness inside of herself.
