The Calm Before An Unforgiving Storm*
I gulp and slowly place my pen in my pocket, I've got to get out of here. My vision is blurring as a sick feeling twirls in my stomach, I turn around to face Jason, his brows knit together in confusion and his mouth opens and closes.
"Evie, you look like you've seen a ghost. Are you ok-"
"Did you leave the yearbook copies at my house as I asked?" I cut him off, gripping the back of the seat tightly, hands shaking.
He nods slowly, looking across at Mya who also looks confused. I snap back around to the front to see X looking completely unbothered, my jaw clenches as he writes another thing on the board.
Without a second thought, I snatched my book off the table and my bag off the ground, almost running out of the classroom. I slam the door close, hearing Derek yelling my name but I ignore him, I have to be sure I've got this right, I have to know it's him.
I sprint as fast as I can, without bursting into super-speed. I may be in a hurry but I still have to keep my secret. As I'm running down the hallway, I shove my book into my bag and close it, throwing it back on my back.
I shove the school doors open, the sharp air of autumn hitting my face. I let out a shaky breath, taking one moment to calm down before I begin my run home, this time at super-speed.
I slam the door open and bolt up the staircase to my room. I swear I almost tear my door off its hinges when I open it, I throw my bag across my room letting it slam against my mirror, cracking it. I dive for the box under my bed and pull it out, I dumb its contents onto my bed, some of it spilling onto the floor.
I grab the big pile of papers that are being kept together by binder rings. I slam it onto my bed and frantically go through all the pages, my friends and I were meant to go through this together this weekend, plans have changed.
I almost miss it because I'm searching so fast, the senior class. I carefully flip through the pages, looking for the students with the last names beginning with 'B', once I get to the right sections I start looking across the rows, looking for his face.
I jump and almost drop the book when my phone starts ringing in my back pocket, I pull out my phone and answer. "Jason, what do you want?"
"Where the hell did you go!? We're all worried!" He shouts into the phone, the muffled sound of students moving in the background.
I pause for a moment, placing the book down, preparing to tell Jason what I discovered. "I think I know who X is," I say, finally admitting it out loud.
"What!?" Multiply voices shout in the background.
"Who?" Jason asks in a hushed tone.
I sigh, "I can't say just yet, or how I know, but give me today to confirm it's true, then we can finally do something, please."
I hear Jason sigh on the other end, I can tell he really wants to help out but I don't think I could possibly explain to him how I know all this. "Fine, but promise you will tell us Evie?" Jason asks just as the bell rings in the background.
"Promise."
I hang up and pick the book back up, just as I'm about to start looking again my phone starts ringing again, jeez Jason, what now? I pick up the phone expecting to hear Jason's voice on the other end, but it's all static.
"Hello?" I speak into the phone, but nothing replies.
I'm about to hang up when suddenly I hear whispering, I can't make it out and I'm struggling to hear it through the static. I listen closely to the whispering, soon I can just make out what they're saying, a name.
They keep repeating this name over and over again. "Ethan?" I breathe, and then the line goes dead. Was the name Ethan? I look down at the yearbook page looking for an Ethan but nothing, how?
But just as I closed the yearbook in defeat, a loud ringing sound echoed my ears. I drop to the ground, screaming in pain, gripping at the side of my head, trying to block the noise out but it gets louder and more painful.
My mind starts to whirl and spin and I can barely hold myself up, I feel myself fall sideways. The ringing becomes so intense I'm seeing white. I feel like I'm about to throw up when the ringing stops and I'm sucked into a memory that isn't my own.
"Rosalee! Please! Let me explain!" Ethan calls out to me, but I'm too engulfed in my anger to care about what he has to say to me.
A hand lands on my shoulder and I spin around, ready to rip the hand off of Ethan's body. Ethan stumbles back from me and almost falls, he looks down at me in shock, suddenly rendered speechless.
"R-Rosalee?" He questions, looking down at me.
"What!?" I shout at him, my body on fire from anger at this point. He really thinks he can talk to me after I caught him in bed with my best--ex-best friend.
"Your eyes," Ethan points a shaky finger at me and I tilt my head, eyebrows furrowing, what does he mean?
I turn around to face a car window and stare at myself, my eyes. My eyes are bright red, why are they bright red? I look back at a terrified Ethan then turn away from him, bolting into the night, something is wrong with me and I don't know what.
Are these mums memories? Soon the world is changing around me again, this time I'm in the middle of the forest during a storm.
Aiden picks me up and spins me around, my boot making contact with the guys head, smashing his skull. I land gracefully and Aiden smiles down at me, he gives me a quick kiss on the lips before we continue fighting Tyson's army. Who is Tyson?
Aiden and I turn back to back and continue to fight off the army, our friends and family doing the same. Once we've taken almost all of them out, I turn towards Aiden who is looking down at me, smiling.
His smile suddenly fades and within the flash, he's removed the dagger I had strapped to my belt and shoving me out of the way. I fall to the ground and look up just in time to see Aiden slice someone across the face with the dagger.
I stand up and join Aiden who is looking down at the guy, who now is bleeding profusely from the wound that goes from just under his left ear into his hairline on the opposite side.
The guy rolls over to look up at me. Ethan. He's using both his hands to try to stop the bleeding but is failing, he glares up at Aiden and I, snarling. "You'll pay for this one day," he mutters rolling back over.
Everything flashes white for a second and then I jolt up, coughing. I look around and realise I'm on the floor of my bedroom, what was th-
I hold that thought as I gag, I cover my mouth trying to stop myself from throwing up as I run into the bathroom. I lean over the toilet bowl and throw up a black liquid, gagging as it keeps coming up.
I eventually stop and I spit into the bowl, grabbing a wet cloth from my sink I wipe away the black liquid. I furiously brush my teeth, unfortunately staining my toothbrush in the process, but now I have a few answers.
Mum and Dad knew X, or Ethan I guess I should call him. Mum dated him back in the day. But that still doesn't explain why he's doing this?
I spit into the sink and clean off my now black toothbrush, I sigh and look up at the mirror, I do look tired, as tired as someone who barely sleeps can look. I make my way back into my bedroom where all the paper is scattered, I have to clean this up.
I bend down to pick up some paper but when I stand back up, a hand clasps around my throat from behind and I drop everything I was holding but the person takes my hand and pins it behind my back. They hold me there as I struggle against them, how are they stronger than me?
"Let me go," I wheeze as more pressed is applied to my throat.
I feel the person's breath against my ear and they chuckle. "Evangeline, it's been too long," he whispers, no...
I elbow the guy in the stomach and turn around to see Nathan straightening himself back up, wincing. He's alive, but how? His corpse was swinging in a tree only a month ago. "I can tell by your expression that you're wondering how I'm alive," Nathan chuckles, sitting himself down on my desk chair.
"I'm going to presume you know Ismey is a witch," he smiles, as I stand there frozen, "she just had to cast a little spell and made some random guy look like me, like she does with my dad's nasty scar."
My eyebrows raise, shocked. Nathan covers his mouth, suppressing a laugh. "Whoops, hadn't figured out that part yet?" He chuckles, standing up and walking over to me, standing in front of me.
I look up at him, hands balling into fists ready to punch him in the face. "Now Evangeline, I'm just here to deliver a note to you, courtesy of dear ol' dad, since he's teaching right now," Nathan smiles, pulling a note from his pocket and handing it to me.
I take it from him, refusing to break eye contact as he smiles sickly. "So X is Ethan Black?" I whisper, my voice wavering slightly.
Nathan traces a finger along my jaw and lets it rest under my chin. "Mhm, correct Evangeline, I'm surprised it took you this long," he says, eyes looking at my lips.
Nathan suddenly pulls away and walks towards my open window. "Wait!" I shout just before Nathan is about to jump, "why?"
Nathan chuckles to himself and turns back around. "Now that's a question you'll have to ask my father," he pretends to tip a hat before leaping out the window.
I rush to the window just in time to see him disappear in a cloud of yellow smoke. I let out a deep sigh and sat back on my bed to read the note Nathan left from Ethan.
You finally figured it all out Evangeline, I'm so proud of you. Unfortunately, that means I have to enact the next stage of my plan, I look forward to seeing you soon and so does Nathan.
- X, Ethan Black
I reach for my phone and open the group chat, we need to meet immediately.
FREAK SQUAD:
Eve: Derek's place. After school. I know who X is
* * *
Dad drops me off at the Lightwood's place and says goodbye. I walk down the driveway just as I hear car doors slamming from inside the garage, my friends walk out and look at me all seriously but Laura calls my name when she sees me.
"I didn't know you were joining them," she laughs, pulling me into a tight hug, which I happily return.
"Yeah, I went home early today, family stuff," I lied to her, as Derek leads the others inside.
Laura and I walk up the steps and inside. "This isn't to do with that serial killer nonsense is it?" She asks, and I sense Derek freeze in front of us, but I remain calm.
If Laura knew what we were getting ourselves into she would kill us, and tell all our parents which we don't need right now. "Of course not, we're all just hanging out," I reassure her, pulling off a convincing smile.
She looks at me unsure before bursting into a bright smile. "Okay kiddos! Have fun hanging out and let me know if you want to order pizza again," she laughs walking upstairs and I tense, we definitely won't be ordering pizza again any time soon.
I walk into the meeting room and close the door behind me, and look at my idiot friends who are all spinning around in the chairs, this is going to stop soon.
The last time I was in here it wasn't a very pleasant experience. Lucifer told me that I needed to be careful and to prepare because people were going to die, the memory sends a shiver down my spine. I spot Damon sitting next to Jason as they both try to spin faster, I'm glad he's finally hanging out with us again.
"Okay everyone," Derek starts, catching everyone's attention, "time to get down to business."
Everyone stops what they were doing and circles around the table, eager to hear what I have to say, I'm not even sure what to say. "First off," I start, "Nathan is alive."
Everyone looks around the table in disbelief, unsure of what to say. "How do you know this Evie?" Jason asks, leaning forward in his chair.
I sigh, they may not believe me but I have to tell them. "He visited me, today. He was delivering a note from his father," I reach into my jacket pocket, I slam it onto the table and Jason is the first one to pick it up and read it.
"Ethan Black?" Jason asks, confused as he hands the note off to the girls.
Derek tenses beside me, what does he know that we don't? "A ghost from our parents' past," I gesture between Derek and I. Derek somewhat relaxed but I can still feel how tense he is.
"Wait, wait, wait," Mya waves her hands around, "we saw Nathan's dead corpse hanging in a tree five weeks ago, he can't possibly be alive."
Damon scoffs and rolls his eyes, "well clearly he is."
Jason shoves Damon's shoulder lightly. "Hey man, lose the attitude," Jason tells him as Mya sinks back down into her seat.
I watch as Damon's eyes flash green for a second and his fist ball up on the table. "I'm just saying, it's obvious he's alive," Damon mutters, rolling his eyes.
I look up at Derek knowingly. Ever since Damon gained a temper the smallest things can set him off, and I think he's about to explode.
"I'm just saying Damon-"
"Get you hand off me!" Damon shouts, his chair goes flying out behind him as Jason, still in his chair, hits the wall.
Jason stands up abruptly, his eyes glowing yellow now and you can feel the anger radiating off him. Damon's eyes are bright green and his hands are now swirling with a green light.
I look at Mya and Kara and tell them to follow me. I turn in the doorway to face Derek who looks as worried as I am, he pulls me in and quickly kisses me, just as Damon slides across the table.
I close the door behind me and not a few seconds later growling comes from inside the room. This can't end well. I run outside to join the girls who are standing by the trees, we look back at the house and for a few moments, it is quiet.
BANG!
Damon's body comes flying out of the room, breaking the door in the process. A brown wolf follows Damon out, but this wolf is much bigger than your normal wolf, maybe almost eight-foot-tall.
Jason, in his wolf form, pounces at Damon but Damon uses his magic to throw Jason away from him. Coming out of the room is an abyss black wolf, eyes glowing red and visibly bigger than Jason, it's got to be Derek.
Damon and Jason, while continuing their fight, are getting closer to the big glass doors, which will shatter soon at the rate they are going. I turn to face the girls and pull them in close, ready to protect them from the majority of the glass rainfall.
A couple of seconds later the sound of glass shattering echoes in the woods, I tense up ready to feel the glass piercing into my back, but it never comes. Instead, it sounds like the glass is hitting something behind us.
I stand up and turn around to come face to face with this black, dense fog that has formed a wall in front of us. It has completely blocked our view from the boys but I can still hear their muffled fighting. "Kara, are you doing this?" I ask, hand reaching out to touch the fog.
"Eve..." Kara speaks slowly from behind me, "it's you." Kara's hand wraps around my wrist and raises my hand so I can see it.
My hand looks like it's been dipped in black ink. I glance up at the wall of fog in front of us and smile, this must be what my parents were talking about, that something might change with me, I must admit, new powers are pretty cool.
I raise both my hands up and within the blink of an eye, I bring my hands down and behind me, making the fog disappear. Once it's gone I look at the boys who are dressing behind a bush, but no Damon.
Derek looks up at me and smiles, my cheeks heat up once I realise he is shirtless. He walks up to me and kisses my forehead, his shirt in hand. He pulls his shirt on, smiling down at me knowingly, idiot.
"Where's Damon?" Mya pipes up as Jason joins us, thankfully fully clothed.
"He ran off," Jason sighs, "but Evie, what was that? Black fog thing?" He asks, pushing his hand through his messy hair.
I shrug, smiling slightly. "Guess it was what my parents were talking about, they said I might be different or get a new ability," I explain the best I can, but honestly I'm not even sure if that's exactly what it is.
In that moment, I felt that darkness come to the surface, it wanted to cause pain and suffering. I felt myself slipping into it, just before Kara interrupted that thought pattern and it was gone as quickly as it came.
"We should find Damon guys," Kara pipes up, "and then Evangeline can tell us more about this Ethan Black guy."
Everyone nods in agreement, they still don't know what Ethan looks like, and they are going to be very shocked to learn that it's our math teacher.
* * *
After an hour of looking for Damon, we eventually ended up at the clearing in the woods. He is sitting on a log where the bonfire would be, the sun has begun to set and it's casting a golden glow over everything, warming the cold early October air.
We all run up to him but he doesn't turn to face us, he is just tracing patterns in the dirt with a stick. "Damon..." Derek says his name and is the first to approach Damon.
Derek takes a seat next to Damon and they begin talking, Damon's shoulders begin to shake and I can hear Damon's sobs. Derek wraps his arm over Damon and lets him cry, Jason soon sits down on Damon's other side and wraps his arms around him as well.
They all hold each other there for a few moments before us girls join them. I sit in front of Derek and place a hand on Damon's leg in comfort, Kara sits in front of Jason and does the same as me. Mya kneels down in front of Damon and pulls out a cloth to wipe his tears away.
"Thanks guys," Damons sniffs, cracking a smile, "I'm sorry my anger interrupted our meeting."
We all chuckle and tell him it's okay. "Hey, does this mean I'm the only human?" Mya asks in disbelief. We laugh at this and nod, she throws her hands in the air dramatically saying something like 'now you all have to protect me'.
"But Evangeline," Damon speaks up, "what else were you going to tell us about Ethan Black?"
Everyone suddenly becomes stiff at Damon's question, how do I even tell them?
"The night you all stayed at mine, except Damon, I had a very real feeling nightmare," I start, "he was there, and he showed me his face, Ismey was there too."
Everyone's eyes widen, looking at each other in shock. Believe me, I feel the same way. "He has this nasty scar that my dad gave him, going from his under his left ear and across his face up to his hairline," I tell them picturing how ugly the scar looks but now Ethan still manages to pull it off, like some handsome villain in a Bond film.
"Okay, but we'd know who Ethan was if we saw someone walking around like that," Jason comments, raising an eyebrow.
"Not if they used magic to conceal it," I throw back at him, "Think about an adult you know, who we see almost everyday. High cheekbones, striking green eyes, a little bit odd," I tell them.
Derek, Mya and Jason's eyes all widen in realisation but the others don't catch on. "How is it!?" Kara asks, looking at all of us.
"Our math teacher," Derek whispers, staring off into the distance still trying to process it, "Mr Black, he's our serial killer."
"Dammit!" Jason shouts, "the hot ones are always evil," he huffs, crossing his arms.
I look around at the others. "This morning, in class, I think Ethan wanted me to figure out it was him. I don't know why but I think he's planning something, something big, and I think the pieces of his plan are all falling into place," I say and everyone hums in agreement.
If what I think is true that means something terrible is about to happen. Thinking back to Lucifer's words, 'people will die' 'the man behind this, won't stop until he's dead'. Whatever's coming, can't be good, even the devil believes we are in danger. This is the calm before an unforgiving storm.
