Insufferable Idiots*

Walking into school the next day was weird. I'm presuming the whole school already knows about what happened in P.E yesterday. "Girl! Move you insufferable idiots!" I hear the voice of my best friend yelling, trying to push through the crowd of people in the halls.

"Get your butt here right now!" She yelled at me. I roll my eyes, walking over to her, trust Kara not to care about what people think of her. "Move along people! Nothing to see here!" She yells at the hallway, only a few people were looking cause most of them are too tired to care anyway. Kara's confidence scares me sometimes.

"Come with me," she said, grabbing my wrist and dragging me away from my locker. I almost lost my math and AP history books that I'm holding by the amount of force she used.

Kara drags me into the nearest girls bathroom, luckily not the boys, and she checks every stall is empty. I stand there as Kara checks, she then whips around and points her finger in my face, I lean back a little to make sure I don't lose an eye right now.

"What the Hell happened yesterday!?" She yelled at me, throwing her arms in the air then grabbing my shoulders. Her eyes are wide and if you didn't know Kara like I do you'd think she's a psychopath, that's still up for debt though.

"Well, you know three years ago-" she nods "-I had another breakdown over it, on the school field, the worst yet," I explained as Karas' feature softened at my words.

She quickly pulls me into a hug and starts rubbing my back mutter 'it's okay' over and over again, I hug her back and smile to myself. My best friend may be a psychopath but at least she still cares. "I'm sorry I wasn't there for you Evangeline," she mutters, trying to suppress a sob.

I pull her away from me still holding her shoulders, tears are now running down her face and her eyes are red. "It's okay, no need to cry for me, your friend Mya was there for me," I tell her, wiping her tears away.

"She's great, isn't she," Kara smiles, a faint pink now tinting her cheeks. Did my best friend just blush? Kara has never been one to get all soft over a boy, or anyone, she doesn't get attached so easily. I pretend not to notice her blush as I pull her in for a quick hug.

We pull away again, Kara heads into one of the stalls to grab some toilet paper to clean the mascara from under her eyes. "Just don't let it happen again, the blood moon is this Friday and we don't want an accident like your brothers a few years ago," she tells me, coming out of the stall looking like she hadn't been crying five seconds ago.

"Now!" She shouts, throwing her hands in the air. "To class!" Kara pushes open the bathroom door for me and I shake my head at her, smiling slightly.

Why am I still friends with her?

"Okay, see you in history," Kara waves goodbye, heading in the opposite direction. I wave goodbye to her and head to my first-period class.

As I walk into the classroom I find Mya sitting in the seat next to mine, she waves at me and I smile back at her. Behind my seat, however, is Derek sitting with Jason I presume, and behind them is Nathan. Great.

"Hey Evangeline," Mya greets, as I walk over to them. "Guys, this is Evangeline."

"We already know her," Nathan grumbles from the back, somebody's in a bad mood.

"Nathan, don't be so sour," Jason says, brushing Nathans' comment off. "Take a seat," he tells me, gesturing to the seat in front of Derek.

I glance at Derek and he looks up at me, he glances down at the seat in front of him and smiles tightly as if he's telling me it's okay. I nod slightly and place my books down then taking a seat, I pull out my pen just as the bell goes and a different teacher walks in.

"Hey class," the new man speaks, placing his bag beside the desk. "I know I'm not your normal math teacher but Mr Davis is in hospital and will likely not return so I am your new math teacher," the new teacher tells us smiling but something about his smile doesn't sit well with me.

He doesn't look at old, maybe early forties, but already seems better than Mr Davis. The new teacher has an inviting presence about him, he is dressed rather casual too compared to our old teacher.

"My name is Mr Black," he announces, writing his name on the whiteboard. "Please do not hesitate to come ask for help either, I'm here for you all," he says, smiling as he grabs his laptop out.

Mr Black. I think he'll be a good teacher. "Is it just me or is this teacher kind of hot?" Mya whispers to me, I look at her in disbelief as she shrugs, "just saying, those green eyes are pretty cute."

"I second that," Jason whispers from behind. Mya sticks her hand behind her and high fives him, I roll my eyes at them just as the class begins.

"Evangeline! Kara!" I hear my name called as Kara and I make our way through the cafeteria. Mya is waving us over, I look over at Kara but she is already making her way to their table, sitting there is Jason, Damon, Mya, and Derek. Oh no.

Kara takes a seat next to Mya and I end up sitting next to her and Jason. "So, how's everyone's second day back?" Kara asks the table, everyone is starting to slowly immerse themselves in conversation while having lunch.

I feel out of place sitting here. I look around the table and make eye contact with Derek, he opens his mouth to say something but quickly looks away and continues to talk with Damon. I sigh and reach into my bag, pulling out my black water bottle that is filled with animal blood, that's lunch today.

"Hey," Jason says, poking my arm. I stop drinking and look up at him, "I've been meaning to ask you something."

"Why do you go by only one of your last names and not both?" He asks, which catches the attention of the rest of the table, Kara quickly steps in.

"That's a bit personal, don't you think?" She defends.

"Kara, it's fine," I reassure her, I look back over at Jason but I can see from the corner of my eye Derek is staring. "I just feel like my full name is a bit of a mouthful, always saying, Evangeline Wilson-Ryder gets a bit much," I tell him, smiling awkwardly.

"That's not your full name though," Derek pipes up from across the table. I snap my eyes over to him, confused, why would he say something like that?

I look over at Kara and she looks just as confused as I am. "Why do you say that?" Damon asks, Mya nods too. Jason looks at Derek as if silently asking what the Hell he's doing, I guess Jason knows but the rest don't.

"Because," Derek starts, never breaking eye contact with me. "Her full name is Evangeline Isabell Wilson-Ryder, her middle name comes from someone her mum knew who killed herself," he starts.

"Shut up Derek," I tell him.

"I'm just saying," Derek shrugs, smiling slightly to himself.

My powers didn't work on him, why?

"How do you know that?" Mya asks, looking between us.

I clench my jaw tightly, as I play with my ring under the table. Who knew that somebody could become such a jackass in only a few years. "He used to know me," I tell Mya, my eyes still watching Derek. He raises his eyebrows and cocks his head, challenging me.

"Used to?" Damon questions. Neither Derek or I answer, we are both locked in a staring contest, waiting for the other to break under the tense pressure that has now settled over the table.

Out of nowhere, the bell rings and everyone begins moving but Derek and I don't. "Evangeline," Mya says, waving her hand in front of my face, "it's time for P.E."

With one final glare at Derek, I shove my bottle in my bag and walk off with Mya to P.E. Too bad Derek's in that class. We go to the girls' locker room and get changed, I finish first so I make my way into the gymnasium before Mya. Guess I'm the first one.

I sit on the bleachers by myself and wait for Mya. I watch as Derek enters the gym, he makes his way over to me and stands in front of me. "Hey, can I sit here?" He asks.

I crane my neck to look up at him, I didn't realise how tall he had become. "Sure," I mumble, he takes a seat next to me and I awkwardly look away from him.

"Evangeline," he says getting my attention, I turn to face him and notice how close our faces actually are. "I'm sorry if I was a bit rude earlier," he apologises, glancing down at his hands.

"Uh, it's fine," I say, just as more people enter the gym. "How have you been doin-"

As I go to ask him how he's been, we accidentally touch and it sends sparks all through my body, like when Liam would shock me but not as harshly. Derek snaps his head up to look at me, shock and worry filling his face.

I open my mouth to apologise but Derek has already stood up and walked over to where some of his football friends are talking. "What was that all about?" Mya asks, walking over to me.

"Honestly," I mumble looking over at Derek, he looks back at me as we hold eye contact. "I don't know."

When P.E is over, I planned to confront Derek about his problem earlier. I make sure to change quickly so that when the bell goes I can catch him before he leaves, when the bell goes I run out of the locker room and look around for Derek, I find him and a few of his football buddies making their way to the field.

"Derek!" I yell out to him, his werewolf hearing allows him to hear me and he stops.

I run over to him as he turns to look at me, he raises his eyebrow as I stop in front of him. "What?" He asks, his friends also turn to look at us.

I start to get anxious and play with my ring as they look on at us, Dereks' eyes flick down to my hand as he notices I'm playing with my ring. He looks back up at me then turns his head to the side to talk to his friends without looking at them.

"Go, I'll catch up," they nod and smile knowingly between them as they all walk off. Derek turns his head to look back down at me, "go on."

"Uhh..." I trail off, avoiding eye contact with him. "What was that, at the beginning of P.E? The spark, and why did you react so badly?"

I glance up at Derek as he sighs heavily to himself, he looks down at me and steps slightly closer. "Just know this; there is a bond between us, one that is very hard to resist, one that I'm not sure you want," he explains, stepping closer so he is in front of me now.

"I felt it, three years ago, and now I feel it again. I know you can feel it too, and-" he sighs, looking away from me "-it's going to be hard on the both of us, I'm not sure if I could do that to you."

He looks back down at me, tears brimming his eyes. Derek slowly raises his hand to my face, we don't break eye contact as Derek traces my cheekbone with his fingers every so softly. I can feel the small sparks bouncing between our skin but they don't hurt, the feel, right.

"I missed you, Evangeline," Derek whispers, now holding my face in his hands.

I close my eyes and smile, I've been waiting to hear that from him for three years. "I missed you too," I whisper back.

Derek slowly removes his hands from my face and I open my eyes just in time to watch him turn and walk away from me. I smile sadly as I make my way to the front of the school to walk home. Kara is going to lose it when I tell her this.

"I'm home!" I yell as I walk in the front door to a big empty house. "Of course," I sigh after getting no reply.

We live in a mansion since mum is so famous and has a lot of money, she brought this place back in 2001, only a year after Andy and Liam had been born. Our family and the Lightwoods all moved from Auckland to California together, our family went into a gated neighbourhood and the Lightwoods to the forest.

It's a pretty huge house, two stories. Eight bedrooms, thirteen extra rooms including the kitchen and dining area, an indoor theatre, two gyms, a huge backyard pool, and a foyer that opens to the two staircases that goes upstairs and behind that it leads you into a small pit sitting area which connects the main guest bathroom and the kitchen/dining room.

And it's all in sand beige and black, made out of stone and wood. It was an expensive home but it's all I've known, lived here all my life.

I make my way into the kitchen and grab my water bottle from my bag, I wash it out then dry it. I go into the fridge to find it nicely organised with our animal blood bags taking up almost the whole thing. We have three different fridges, one for animal blood, one for human, and our other one is packed with human food as well as a pantry in case we have guests.

I bring out one bag and start filling my water bottle for the next day when Liam walks in looking angrier than normal. "Where's dad?" I ask him as he walks past to grab himself his own snack.

"Probably in his office, not that it matters," he growls, sitting down at the kitchen bench sucking on a blood bag with a straw.

"And your brother?" I ask, my bottle filled. I throw out the empty bag and place my water bottle in the fridge's side compartment so I can find it easily tomorrow.

"In his room, he never leaves," he says, also throwing out his rubbish.

I nod at him and walk out of the kitchen, I head upstairs and down some of the many hallways to my room. My room is also massive, my double bed sits on one wall with two bedside tables, opposite to my bed is two doors on either side, a rack of my most expensive clothes and shoes between them, one leads to my walk-in wardrobe and the other to my bathroom.

Opposite my door is where a massive window sits that you could easily get in and out of, which I do when I get bored at night, in the corner is two bookcases filled to the brim with books both old and new. Then I have two desks that sit next to my door, one is for my studying and the other for makeup.

I also changed my colour scheme for my room, the walls are white except my feature wall behind my bed which is a royal purple and filled with photos of my friends and family. A lot of my furniture is also either white or black, and my blankets are also purple, at the end of my bed is a small couch that is black with white pillows for anyone who comes over. In the middle of my room is a big fluffy rug too which Kara loves to roll around on.

Speaking of Kara, I grab my phone out and find her number. It rings for only a few seconds before she picks up and I relay everything that happened with Derek to her.

"What!?" She yells in my ear. "Holy shit! This is huge! And bad news, yet exciting!" She screams as I hear her jumping on her bed in the background.

"So it means something?" I ask, holding onto one of my pillows as I smile widely.

"Obviously! Derek that sly son of a bitc-"

"Language Kara!" I hear her mother shout in the background, cutting off Kara.

I laugh at her and she curses at me but quietly. "Anyway, I have to go, my AP English teacher already hates me. Goodnight Eve," she says.

"Goodnight K," I say, hanging up.

I lie back down on my bed, smiling to myself. I always knew back when Derek and I were still friends that I had the smallest crush on him, could it be possible he felt the same way?
