Hallucinations, A Minor Side Effect*
"I just don't get it," I whispered to Jason as we sit in science class, "nothing is adding up."
"Evie, stop worrying. Derek and his parents are figuring out what to do, I'm sure it was just a random murder, happens here all the time," Jason mumbles taking notes from the whiteboard.
I sigh and drop my pen, turning to Jason. "I know but I can't help but feel that this is something serious that needs more looking into," I tell him, frowning slightly.
"And you're starting to sound like one of those teens one those shitty murder shows," he says, looking at me with a raised eyebrow. Just then the bell goes and we pack our stuff away, ready to head to period four.
When lunchtime comes around Damon, Jason and I walk towards the cafeteria laughing about how Damon yet again upset our English teacher. Suddenly, a cold feeling comes over me and it feels like somebody is staring at me.
I turn around for a second and notice Nathan leaning against the lockers, glaring daggers at me. He then smirks when he notices me staring and winks, I glare at him before he walks off. I brush it off and walk into the cafeteria with the boys and sit down at our lunch table.
I sit next to Derek and he kisses my cheek. "How was class darling?" He asks as I pull out my black water bottle.
"Yeah, it was good, Damon pissed off our English teacher again," I laugh as Damon looks at me and throws a sarcastic wink with finger guns.
"Evie," Jason says from the opposite end of the table, "do you like, eat?"
I raise my eyebrow at him questioning, "unless you count any form of blood as 'eating'-" I put finger quotations on eating- "then I don't."
"Odd, I didn't know that," Mya says, taking a bite of her pasta.
Everyone soon falls into casual conversation again, I feel cold all over again and look around the room trying to find Nathan. I spot him by the cafeteria doors but he's not alone, each side of him is a man and a woman.
The woman has long golden hair and her eyes are bright yellow, almost sick looking, she is dressed head to toe in a black uniform of some kind. The man has a hood over his head and a face mask over his mouth, his eyes, however, are almost glowing green, I feel a sense of familiarity in them.
My eyes widen as I realise it's them, the people from Friday night, the murders. "Derek," I mumble, tapping his shoulder not averting my eyes from them.
Derek asks me what's wrong but I just point at Nathan with a shaky finger, soon they are engulfed within yellow smoke making it hard to see them.
"I only see Nathan," he says, turning my face to look at him, concern filling his face.
I turn back to look at where they were but both them and Nathan are gone, I begin anxiously playing with my ring, panic filling my entire body. "Did Nathan just walk away?" I asked, turning back to the table.
"Evangeline, are you alright?" Damon asks, Jason places a hand on my forehead but I slap it away.
"Did he walk away?" I demand, Derek grabs my hand to stop me from shaking.
"He did, why?" Mya asks me, finishing off her pasta and coke.
"I saw the people from Friday," I whisper, Jason looks at Derek asking for confirmation but he shrugs slightly, confused as everyone else. They don't believe me.
"Could have been a hallucination? Kara said you get them from time to time," Damon hesitated to say.
I look around the table, a frown on my face. They think I'm hallucinating, they think I'm crazy. Without another word I stand from the table and walk off, I hear Derek call my name from behind me but I ignore him and walk faster. I get to the girls' locker room and wait outside for the bell to ring.
"You know, they probably don't get you and your powers," I hear Nathan say from behind me. This annoying asshole again.
"Go away Nathan," I tell him, crossing my arms over my chest.
Nathan comes and stands in front of me, a dumb smile on his face and I roll my eyes. "You know-" he lightly caressed my face. I stare at him in shock- "if you weren't with Derek I would have you."
I slap his hand away from me and glared at him, I push myself off the wall and start walking away from him but he follows. I walk faster and he chuckles to himself. Out of nowhere, I'm slammed against the wall by an unseen force and Nathan smiles, standing a couple of feet away from me. He couldn't have done that, he's not even touching me.
"I was really upset when Kara broke up with me, she was a fine piece of ass," Nathan smiles, I try to move but I can't which only angers me more as the bell rings. "But I was even sadder because it meant I couldn't see your beautiful face," he says, stepping closer and touching my face.
"Nathan, stop it," I demand, making sure to hold eye contact with him. His eyes flash purple and he removes his hand from my face and steps away, looking confused.
"What are you doing!?" He shouts, holding his head.
Suddenly I'm let off the wall and I don't bother answering him before I take off running down the hallway towards the field. When I get there I notice the entire class is standing at the tree line looking at something.
I run down the bleachers and all the way across the field. I push my way past everyone to find Mya and Derek standing at the front of the crowd when I get there Derek is crouched down at a body that is destroyed beyond recognition, covered in blood.
I gasp and crouch next to him as Mya also comes next to me. The shirt is ripped open and it's hard to see through all the blood but there's an 'X' surrounded in a circle craved into the person's chest. "You think it was them?" Mya whispers, making sure our classmates don't hear.
"Must be," Derek mutters, "I'll get my parents to check it out." Derek subtly grabs out his phone and takes a photo of the body.
I hover my hand above the symbol careful not to touch it, someone accidentally knocks me though and my hand slips, soon I start to see images flash in my mind of this mans' final moments.
First, it's him walking going for a walk through the forest, then two people grab him and stab him multiple times in the back. They draw the symbol on his chest before dropping his body here, as the imagines stop, my hand begins shaking profusely and I feel sick.
"Eve, are you okay?" Derek asks coming over to me, helping me stand as sirens echo from the school parking lot. "What did you see?" He asks, leading me away from the body as Mya follows.
We walk over to the bleachers and sit down as I nurse a headache, I look up at the tree line as the police are boarding off where the body is. I notice both of the people from earlier are standing there, watching everything unfold but nobody seems to notice. So I wasn't hallucinating.
* * *
It's now Thursday, three days after the body was found, and the police have opened up the field just in time for tomorrow night's first football game of the season. Which Derek, Jason and Damon have been training extensively for and Mya has been training her cheer team with their routines.
Kara also came back to school today, we filled her in about all that's happened and she flipped out. "I'll come watch you guys train after school," I say as we all sit around our lunch table.
"Kara? What about you?" Mya asks her, a faint blush coating her cheeks. Is it possible that Mya is into Kara?
"Sorry, I have to go straight home after school, but I'll be at the game," she smiles. Mya looks slightly disappointed at this news but smiles through it.
After school, I walk with Mya to the girls' locker room as she pulls out her cheer uniform and changes. The uniform is a tight top and pleated skirt in the school colours which are light blue and dark blue, underneath is a long sleeve white shirt.
"You should consider joining the team," she tells me as she shoves her clothes into her gym bag then locker.
"No way," I laugh, "that's the number one way to expose myself and everyone around me."
Mya chuckles at this as we make our way out of the locker room and down onto the field. I say goodbye to Mya and start on some homework. After about an hour I had finished my homework which is really annoying.
I look out onto the field where the cheerleaders are practising and the football players are currently running around the track as a punishment of sorts. Most of them are also shirtless which is an enjoyable sight but I'm only looking at Derek who winks every time they run past.
On the next lap, Derek grabs my hands and pulls me to my feet forcing me to run with them. "You've got nothing better to do," he chuckles as I run alongside him.
"Derek's girl has decided to join us!" One of the football players yells from behind as Derek and I run at the front of them all. Supernatural unfair advantage.
Derek seems visibly upset by this comment but says nothing, his eyes flick between yellow and his normal brown but occasionally go red too for a split second. "She can keep up with us too! Impressive!" Another guy yells from the back.
"And she has a nice ass!" Someone else yells. Suddenly Derek stops running and turns around to face the guy who made the comment. He marches over to him and grabs him by the shirt, almost lifting him off the ground.
"I'd watch that mouth if I was you," he growls, shoving the guy slightly but never letting go.
Damon runs over to Derek and places a hand on his shoulder. "Hey man, we need all of our players for tomorrow," he says calmly to avoid upsetting him even more.
Derek holds there for a second longer before dropping the poor guy, he walks over to me and lightly grabs my hand and leads me over to the bleachers. Derek's anger has almost completely fizzled out but his body temperature is still a bit above normal.
"Sorry," he sighs, dropping his head.
I cup his face lightly and make him look at me, "it's okay."
I kiss his forehead and tell him I'll head home now so he can focus, I run up the bleachers and grab my bag before running back down to Derek. I quickly kiss him on the lips, telling him goodbye then beginning my walk home.
* * *
Today's now the day of the game and you can tell the school is excited. Everyone is buzzing about tonight and how it should be an easy game, let's hope they're right.
"Eve!" I hear Derek's voice come from down the hallway, I turn around to see him and Jason running down the hallway, Derek is holding a paper bag with something inside it.
"Hello, my love-" I place a kiss on Derek's cheek- "Hey Jason," I say as he gives me a hug. "What's in the bag?" I ask, looking down at the bag then back at Derek.
"Our new team letterman, I want you to wear it for me," he said, pulling it out of the bag and pushing it into my arms. He encourages me to put it on so I hand him my books and bag, I put it on and it's a few sizes too big for me but Derek seems really happy.
I take my things back from him and he says goodbye to me, placing a kiss on my cheek before running off down the hallway with Jason. Boys, they are humanity's weirdest creatures.
At lunchtime, I head down to the field to say hi to Mya, Jason, Damon and Derek. I greet everyone before sitting on the bleachers to drink my lunch, all the football boys whistle at me joking and I laugh at how mad Derek looks right now so I blow him and kiss which makes him smile.
When training is over Derek runs over to me with a smile on his face. "The boys want to introduce themselves," he tells me, grabbing my hand and dragging me over to where the team is standing on the field.
After each one of them introduces themselves I go back along and say each person's name. First, there is Damon who I obviously knew and the captain, Jason and Derek, then Chris, Isaac, Jack and Zack who are twins, Ryan, Conner, Sam and Finn, then the substitutes Joseph, Theo, James and Jay.
"She got everyone's names right," Jay says in disbelief.
I roll my eyes at them, giving Derek a kiss goodbye telling him I'll see him at the game tonight. As I walk down the hallway to the girls' locker room I notice Nathan coming towards me with a proud smile.
I try to avoid him but he grabs my arm and stops me. "Everything is going according to plan," he whispers in my ear before walking off. I watch him walk down the hallway just as the last bell goes, I hurry to P.E. and get ready for gym.
* * *
At around six-thirty, I begin getting ready for the game at seven. I have my shower and do some very light makeup before picking out something to wear, of course I will wear Derek's jacket on top.
I grab a black long sleeve with a rose embroidered on the corner, black and white cargo pants, white Gucci platform sneakers and my big black wool Gucci coat. I put on my locket necklace and grab a small black and grey Gucci side bag.
When I leave my room I notice Andy's door is open slightly which is unusual for him, I open the door to his room and see he's not there. "Andy?" I call into his room.
Some crashing comes from his bathroom before he emerges at the door. "Oh, you look nice," he compliments me, a bit taken back.
"Yeah, Derek's game is tonight, you coming?" I ask him as I slide on Derek letterman.
Andy thinks about it for a second. "Think I'm good," he says, nodding slightly, "hey you got a pencil sharpener? Art stuff," he awkwardly asks.
I nod and head back into my room to grab it, when I go to his room he's standing at the door smiling tightly. "You're the best Evangeline," he says, ruffling my hair.
I slap his hand away and say goodbye to him before he closes his door. I knock on Liam's door asking if he's coming tonight, he says no and, I quote, 'shit to smoke, bitches to bang'. My brother is such a hypocrite, says he wants to change then doesn't.
I walk downstairs and into the kitchen to fill a travel cup with some blood just in case I get peckish tonight. Dad is sitting at the kitchen counter, working on some photos when I come in. "Those look really good dad," I tell him as I grab my snack and begin filling my bottle.
"Thanks, sweetheart," he says, looking up at me then back down, "going to Derek's game?"
I smile when dad seems unfazed about Derek and me. "Yeah, I got to be the supportive girlfriend," I smile, throwing my trash away.
"I would like to see that boy someday again," dad smiles to himself, closing his laptop.
I nod and smile, Derek will be happy to know that. I make my way towards the front door as dad starts walking upstairs, I hear him mumble something like 'I have a bad feeling about this'
"What was that dad?" I ask, turning back around.
Dad turns around to face me, a smile on his face, "nothing sweetheart, go enjoy the game."
Odd but okay.
