H20 Just Add Murder*

After what Mya, Derek and I found yesterday the principal has closed off the field until further notice, two students have died in within the span of a week. Four in total, a serial killer is now at large and my friends don't seem to be concerned, we need to do something about X and his yellow sidekick.

And for the love of Satan, X killed his own son, as much as I hated Nathan nobody deserves to be murdered. His death was ruled a suicide by authorities but everyone's thinking the same thing, it was a brutal murder. I did stash the note in my pocket and took it home, this note was directed at us and I don't think people needed to know that.

'He disobeyed us. My own son. Now he's dead. Next, it's you'

The note is still in my head, I see it everywhere I go. It's almost as if I have to remind myself it happened. X killed his son.

I laid in my bed that night staring at the ceiling, thinking about everything that's occurred these past two weeks. Exactly a week after we saw some random person get killed a student gets killed, then only four days later Nathan shows up dead. We have to do something. Anything. We need to save people. We need to stop X before he murders more innocents.

I super-speed across my room and grab my phone off my desk and text the group chat. Jason insisted we created an Instagram group chat that he called 'Freak Squad'. I tell them all to meet me on the Santa Monica beach, close to where Crystal's funeral will be held.

"Dad! I'm heading out!" I yell as I walk past his office, throwing on a jacket.

His door opens and he calls my name, making me stop at the top of the stairs. "Evangeline, tonight is our sleep night, where are you going?" He asked arms crossed over his chest.

"I'll be back by one to get my sleep, promise," I tell him smiling. He rolls his eyes at me but turns around and walks to his bedroom.

I super speed down the stairs and out the door, quickly making my way down to the beach. I get there and wait about half an hour before everyone shows up. "What is it, Evangeline?" Mya asks, rubbing her eyes.

"It's eleven o'clock, this better be good," Damon yawns, sitting down in the sand.

"You see where we are?-" They all nod slowly- "just across the street is where Crystal's funeral be held Saturday," I explain to them but they all look at me with unamused expressions.

"Do you guys not see!? An innocent student, a defenceless human died at the hands of these people! Murderers! And you guys are pretending nothing happened!" I shout at them. "Then yesterday, Nathan was strung up to a tree by his own father! His father! Do you not see we're next!? He threatened all of us! All of us..." I trailed off.

Most of them look at me in shock but saying nothing, I roll my eyes and turn around storming off down the beach towards the water. We are in danger and they can't seem to see it.

"She's right," I hear Damon say from up on the beach, his footsteps echo in the sand before he appears at my side, an encouraging smile on his face.

I hear more footsteps make their way towards me and Kara shows up at my side. "We're sorry," she apologises, putting her arm around my shoulder and pulling me close.

The waves lightly crash over our feet, the cold over the ocean feels like it's sweeping over my problems as the waves pull back out to sea. I inhale deeply enjoying the ocean breeze and the cool water.

Suddenly Kara is no longer standing at my side as I watch her run, fully clothed into the ocean. What the Hell is she doing? She dives under the water and I don't wait a moment before I pull off my jacket and shirt, running in after her.

I run further until the water is up to my waist. "Kara!?" I yell to the ocean, waiting for her to resurface at any moment. She can't swim, why would she do that?

"Evangeline! What are you doing!?" Jason asks from the shore, they don't know, that's right.

"Kara can't swim!" I yell back at them. I watch as everyone's faces morph into panic and soon everyone is taking their shoes, socks and shirts off.

Everyone has eventually run into the water as we spread out looking for her. It's been nearly ten minutes of looking but she hasn't come back to the surface, what if she drowned? What if my best friend is dead?

"Kara! Where are you!?" I shout, slamming my hands on the surface of the water just as tears start to brim my eyes.

"I'm right here," the small voice of Kara comes from behind.

I spin around and see her floating there, almost completely submerged but she doesn't look panicked at all, she looks calm. She is also not wearing her clothes from before, more what looks like a shell bra but I can't be certain.

I run forward to her, happy she's okay but she backs away from me, hands outstretched. "Eve, I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner," she whispers, on the verge of tears.

"Why are you sorry? What's wrong K?" I softly ask her, stepping forward.

"I was afraid, I'm sorry," she sobs and I swim forward, embracing her in a hug. As I do I feel my legs brush against what feels like a fish but much large.

That's what she wasn't telling me, "Kara, is this what you weren't telling me?"

She nods, looking down at the water, "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."

I wasn't expecting my best friend to be a mermaid for sure, but it makes sense why she never wanted to go to the beach anymore. I'm a bit freaked out but more worried for her safety, she's supernatural which means she's at risk now.

"When did this happen?" I ask, holding her shoulders trying to make her feel safe.

"The summer, three years ago, when your families fell out-" she motions between Derek and me- "I was with Nathan, it was late, and he shoved me off the pier," she mumbles, her lip wobbling slightly.

I feel my eyes change colour at the mention of Nathan shoving her off the pier. Nathan knew she couldn't swim and he pushed her anyway, I take back what I said earlier about nobody deserving murder, he deserved that for almost killing my best friend.

"He never jumped in to save me, and I sunk deeper and deeper into the water. But as I laid at the bottom, watching the moon ripple in the water, I saw someone swim above me." She looks up at me and smiles, then looks at the waning crescent moon above us.

"She has a human body and a fishtail, I knew it was a mermaid. She started singing and within a few moments I was above the water and saved, I didn't have legs anymore though. She told me I wasn't allowed to touch saltwater unless I wanted this tail," Kara finished her story, raising her tail out of the water.

The fin of her tail would have been at least a meter and a half across, and two meters tall, it was huge. It looked like a normal double emarginated fishtail but in a deep ocean blue, it also seemed to glisten like jewels were placed on it, her tail itself would have added seven inches to Kara's height and was the same deep ocean blue but with finely placed fish scales.

"Kara..." Mya mutters, touching her tail, "this is beautiful."

Kara seems to blush at this after everyone moves closer to get a good look, Derek wraps his arms over my shoulders as we stare as her tail. "I'm sorry but what the Hell!?" Jason exclaims.

"She a mermaid dumbass," Damon said, whacking Jason over the back of the head, yet he still seems as shocked as the rest of us.

We all laugh as Jason starts chasing Damon back to shore and splashing him. "Does that mean I'm the only human in this friend group?" Mya huffs as we all swim back to shore.

"Damon's still human," Kara laughs, Mya looks away nervously as we get out of the water.

Kara pulls herself out of the water and lies on the beach in her full fishy glory. For the next hour, we all sit under the pier to dry off and wait for Kara to return to normal. Once she dries off her body turns to water than back into her human form, she is completely dry and back in her normal clothes.

"H2O!?" Jason exclaims, jumping up and down as we laugh at him.

By about twelve a.m. we all put our clothes on and say goodbye, Kara comes back to mine so we can have a mini sleepover. We end up talking all night and watching some movies, during the movie I look over to Kara who is still awake, I pause it and she starts complaining.

"Okay, I wasn't going to ask in front of everyone but tell me the truth," I say, facing her. She looks at me confused by turns to face me. "Mya, are you into her?"

A huge blush breaks out on Kara's face and she starts stuttering and looking anywhere but me, a smile has broken out on her face. "Kara, it's okay, you know I would never judge you," I tell her, taking both her hands in mine.

She looks at me and smiles. "I am, I think I've always known I was into girls but I was too afraid to admit it to myself, Evangeline," she admits, a sob escaping her lips.

I pull her into a tight hug as she suddenly burst into tears on my shoulder, I hold her tightly letting her violently cry on me. "What's wrong with me Eve?" She asks.

I pull her away from me and look her in the eyes which are red and puffy. "Never say that to me again," I tell her, my face growing serious, "there is nothing wrong with you, there never has been anything wrong with you, just because you like aren't like anyone else doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you."

Her lip wobbles as she wipes a tear away, "but-"

"No Kara," I tell her, holding her face, "you are still Kara no matter who you love, I don't care what anyone else says because you are still you."

She nods her head as her tears begin to stop. "Do we want to call Jason?" I ask her, she nods so I grab my phone and call Jason. We talk with him till about three a.m. and by there Kara feels much better about herself, I knew her talking to him would make her feel a bit better.

"Okay but that's kind of unfair Kara, I haven't had a boyfriend in two years and you come along and be like 'yeah me and Mya will totally be dating in a week' not cool girl!" Jason yells over the phone.

Kara laughs at this before we all say goodbye and finally decide to get some sleep, even though we have to get up in the next four hours. "Feel better?" I ask Kara, she nods and smiles widely, good.

* * *

That Saturday is Crystal's funeral, which has a lot of attendants, people were practically spilling out the doors. Mya and Kara came over earlier that day to get ready with me, they both brought their own black dresses to wear but I lent them any jewellery they wanted.

Kara wore a plain, short sleeve, short chiffon dress with her Doc Martins and had a small black clutch with her. She also tied her hair up in a black scrunchie and did her makeup very natural and light with a pink lip gloss.

Mya wore a plain, long sleeve, short velvet dress with a pair of black ballerina flats and had a small black handbag with her. She pulled her hair up into a bun and also left her makeup natural with a small amount of gold glitter and dark brown lipstick.

I wore a short-sleeve, short LV dress with lacing details on the side with my LV stiletto ankle boots that have a stretch material over top, and a black LV camera bag. My hair was left loose and my makeup was also natural with nude lipstick, considering the media will be all over this event I needed to dress up a bit more than my friends, I warned Derek about this as well.

"Why?" He asked as we spoke over the phone.

"I told you. This is a very public event and now that we're together you will be in the public eye, just wear something nice," I told him, grabbing my long black LV wrap coat from my wardrobe. "Trust me, they will look at what you're wearing."

"Fine, just for you," he groans and I smile, leaving the house with the girls.

When we got to the funeral, we met up with the boys who are all dressed in black. Damon has a more relaxed look with black jeans, a smile black shirt and white vans, Jason was a little bit more dressed up in an all back suit without the blazer and black dress shoes with pink laces.

When I spot Derek I smile to myself but he just rolls his eyes at me. He's wearing a black dress shirt that has white embroidery around the collar, black suit pants, of course just some black sneakers but his blazer is my favourite. It's a solid black but has white flower embroidery all over it.

"You owe me for this," he tells me, giving me a quick kiss.

"I know," I smile, holding onto his necklace. He rolls his eyes at me but puts his arm out and I loop it with his. Just as we are about to walk in with our friends somebody steps in front of us and a camera flashes in our face.

"Is this your boyfriend?"

"What do you have to say about the serial killer in town?"

"What's his name?"

"Do you think the authorities will catch this mystery man?"

"Can you tell us what you're wearing?"

Questions are thrown left, right and centre but I have no time to answer, suddenly a tall, big man steps in front of Derek and me, allowing us to walk through the crowd. When we get inside I look up and notice it's the bodyguard my dad hired for events to keep me safe.

He pulls us to the side and asks if we're okay. "Yes, thank you Antonne," I thank him, as Derek looks up at him.

Antonne stands around six foot five and is huge muscle wise. He usually scares off the press pretty well, his hair is dark and cute very short, he always wears a black shirt and jeans, his eyes are a light brown and he is an African American.

Even though I could probably beat him in an arm wrestle he steps in as more of a scare factor. Dad doesn't call him up very often but I guess he did this time since he knew the paparazzi would be at this event.

"Oh, Derek, this is Antonne, personal bodyguard," I introduce them to each other.

Derek shakes Antonne's hand and smiles, I think it's weird for him to have to look up to someone for once. "You got a killer grip, Derek, supernatural?" He asks and Derek nods.

Obviously we had to tell him or else it would seem a bit off that a sixteen-year-old, five-four girl could take down a man that's almost half a person taller than her. Dad pays him double to keep it a secret which has worked out for years now.

"You okay after that Evangeline?" Antonne asks, placing a hand on my shoulder.

"Yes, thank you so much. Did dad call you?" I ask him as the last of the people slowly enter the building.

"Of course Aiden did, he was worried you would get caught in something like that," he tells me, "but you do know you will have to answer a few questions afterwards."

I nod at his statement and look down, sometimes I forget my life has been in the public eye since I was born. Mum is an A-list celebrity so that means every move I make is observed by the press, they do tend to stay away at school or school-related events but as soon as I step off the school property it's a free for all up until I get into my gated neighbourhood.

That's kind of why I avoid hanging out anywhere public, Kara has also been harassed by the press a few times but she manages to get away, now I've brought Derek into and it won't be easy for him either. It has its benefits, like a big social media following which means I have influence over people so I can share things I'm passionate about, nice clothes are a bonus too.

Anotonne says goodbye and that he'll be by the door waiting for me when the service is over. Derek and I find our friends and stand with them on the sides with other classmates watching on as friends and family cry.

"Thank you to everyone who came today, strangers and friends alike," I'm presuming Crystal's father said, "Crystal would have been overjoyed to know people cared about her this much, especially the presence of a celebrity."

Oh no, don't bring me into this.

"Thank you Ms Wilson-Ryder," her dad gesture to where I'm stood, everyone looks over and I start to feel my anxiety rising.

Before I start to play with my ring, Derek grabs my hand and starts rubbing the top of my hand to calm me down which works. "My family sends their condolences," I smile and he nods.

After the ceremony is over people begin to file out of the building, a private wake for close friends and family is being held back at the families home, before I leave I approach Crystal's father.

"Mr Callas sir," I say, he turns around and looks almost shocked to see me. "I know the rest of my family couldn't be here today but I have a check made out to your family that should cover any costs," I tell him, pulling a check out of my purse and handing it to him.

"I can't accept this," he says, looking down at it then back at me.

"Please, it's the least we can do, we have money to spare," I smile.

He suddenly pulls me into a tight hug and the rest of Crystal's family joins in, crying heavily. I say goodbye to them once they let go, Antonne joins back with Derek and me again as we walk outside, we are meet with flashing cameras and microphones in our faces.

"Please, I'll try to answer as many questions as possible," I announce to the crowd. "First, a statement."

"This is my boyfriend, his name is Derek Lightwood and we have been officially dating for almost three weeks now," I say to everyone as flashes almost blind me.

"Can you give a statement on the serial killer at large, what people call 'The Sprial Killer'?" A woman asks from the front, microphone in my face.

"No, I cannot, but it is unfortunate and I hope this person is caught soon. That will be all," I say, Antonne walks in front of Derek and I as we meet with our friends where a car is waiting for us.

Antonne ends up dropping everyone home which I'm grateful for, he drops me off and I wave him goodbye before heading back up to the house. I get inside and make my way upstairs and dad calls me from his office.

"How was it?" He asks, looking up from his computer.

"As good as funerals can be, thanks for sending Antonne over though," I thank him, pulling off my shoes.

"No problem," dad smiles, I shut his office door and make my way back to my room.

I collapse on my bed and sigh, I will find X and avenge the death of the people he killed. I promise him that because this just became personal.
