Do You Realise Romeo & Juliet Is A Tragedy?*

"It's only the third day back and I already have boy drama!" I exclaimed, slamming my locker shut and leaning against it. I cannot afford this, I'm supposed to be studying to go to Oxford not worrying about boys, or a certain boy.

Kara just laughs at me and pats my head, a sarcastic sympathetic smile on her face. "There there wee lamb," she says, trying to hold back her laughter.

I glare and slap her hand away from my head, we start walking in the direction of our first-period class when I spot ahead of us Mya, Liam, and my least favourite, Nathan. Kara hasn't spotted them yet but she will.

"Talk about annoying things," I mutter, specifically talking about Nathan but also my brother. He was in a particularly bad mood this morning when he left the house.

"Babe!" Kara squeals, running over to Nathan. He catches her in his arms and spins her around, Liam rolls his eyes and leans against some poor kids locker.

Mya walks over to me and we laugh at Kara and Nathan. "Hey Mya," I greet her, trying to ignore Kara and Nathan kissing in the background and Liam harassing some freshmen after they asked him to move.

"How's it going?" She asks, tying one of her ribbons in her high ponytail. She's in her cheerleading uniform today.

"Great, it's the usual, struggling with school and now boy problems," I say, making us both laugh.

"Oh if only I could relate," she laughs, making a 'jazz hands' motion.

"Hey, Evangeline," Nathan calls, getting me attention. "Who were you talking to after school yesterday? Looked pretty seriously," he asks, a knowing smile playing on his face.

Kara looks up at Nathan in shock, then to me. I open my mouth to reply but notice out of the corner of my eye, Liam has suddenly taken interest in this conversation. Liam has a tendency to hate any boy I talk to, he also despises the Lightwood family with all his being, can you see how this could end?

"What guy?" I play dumb, pressing my lips together. I swear to Satan that I will murder Nathan if he continues to go on.

"Yesterday," he muses, "he was tall, dark hair, attractive. Isn't he on the football team? His name starts with a 'D' I believe," Nathan adds, smiling while looking at Liam who has now walked over to us.

"Who was it?" Liam asks, intrigued by who I was talking to. I look at Kara nervously and she shrugs her shoulders, also clueless on what to do.

"No one," I tell him, crossing my arms and looking away from him.

"Evangeline," Liam says my name in a firm tone, "who was it?"

Liam takes a step towards me, hoping to intimidate me, like he ever could. Liam is all talk and no walk when it comes to fighting me, he can try all he wants but he'll never actually hurt me.

"No one," I bite back.

It all happened so quickly. One moment I was standing there, the next I'm thrown against the lockers and Liam was standing above me, absolutely fuming.

"Who was it!?" he yells in my face, his hand directly in front of my face, if almost ready to slap me. I glance at his fingers where blue sparks are bouncing between them, the air has suddenly become static and tense as a small crowd has been drawn.

"No one!" I shout, trying to shove him away but it doesn't work, Liam is the stronger one between the two of us. It makes it harder to fight him when we do fight, which is a lot recently.

I start hitting his chest trying to get him to move but he won't, a hand lands on Liams' shoulder that startles both of us. "Backup Ryder," Dereks' voice comes from behind Liam. This will not make it any better.

"Piss off Lightwood," Liam grits, not turning away from me, "this has nothing to do with you."

"Actually, it does-" Liam snaps his head to look at Derek- "right Evangeline? I was the one you were talking to," Derek grins, watching my eyes go wide. I was trying to protect him but if he wishes for death, he just got it.

"You what!?" Liam shouts, turning around to look at me, his eyes flicking between electric blue and his normal blue. "Evangeline, you better be glad we're in school right now," Liam says lowly before turning back to Derek, who now looks a little worried as he can sense the electricity bouncing from Liam.

"But you Lightwood, you're dead," Liam growls. Derek doesn't have any time to react before Liams' fist makes contact with his face and the crowd grows as the fight breaks loose.

"Liam! Stop!" I shouted as they rolled over one another, punches flying left, right and centre.

"Liam! Don't make me force you," I said, finally pulling him off Derek. I stand in front of him, forcing him back, quickly casting an illusion in his eyes so he can't see.

Looking at his face he only has a bruised cheek that will heal by tonight. "Evangeline, what have you done to me?" He asks, looking around frantically.

"I'll undo it if you walk away now," I tell him, he nods slightly. I raise my finger to his eyes and move it across them, dropping the illusion.

I turn to look at Derek, who is still on the ground, and his face is much worse. Derek has a forming black eye, bruised cheek, and blooding dripping from his lip. My heart pulls as I feel guilty and the need to go to him but decide against it, he'll heal by tonight as well and I don't want to make the situation worse.

"Next time Lightwood, don't even think!-" Liam jabs a finger in Dereks' direction- "of going anywhere near my sister!" He shouts, then storming off in the opposite direction.

The hallway is almost completely cleared, as well as Mya, Kara, and Nathan. I walk over to Derek to help him up off the floor. I extend my hand out to him, he takes it and when we touch the sparks return, he only looks at me with compassionate eyes. We hold eye contact before he leans in closer, not one of us breaks eye contact as he pushes himself off the ground still holding my hand.

He looks down at me, the sparks growing more intense. My lips part slightly as I go to say something but Derek pulls his hand from mine and walks off before I can say anything.

"Derek! Wait!" I call after him as he walks away.

He stops and turns to look at me over his shoulder, his face changes from sombre to hard as he looks at me. "I don't want another beating from your brother, so leave me alone," he says quietly, then walks off down the hall.

I sigh as I watch his retreating figure, my face all flustered now. Time for math I guess.

* * *

"This cannot be happening!" I hear Derek whisper to Jason as we sit in math. Now their useless blabbering is going to distract me from learning in class.

"It's happening, can't deny it," Jason whispers back as I hear his pen scribble on his paper. They both suck at trying to be quiet, or is it just my enhanced hearing?

"But I can reject her, she doesn't know," Derek tells Jason. What don't I know?

"Remember class," Mr Black announces, "your answer is only as good as your working, without one or the other you will fail the test."

"Or..." Jason trails on, ignoring the teacher, "you get to know her before you do that, having a mate is the highest honour for our kind, especially a future alpha."

Reject me? Highest honour? What in Satans' name are they on about? I mean like I would want Derek after what he pulled earlier. I mean, he isn't that bad, his hair always looks super-soft, he was always nice to me, he's on the football team so he must be in shape, his eyes are also like gorgeous brown pools of honey, he has-

Wait, no, I'm not about to start daydreaming about him. No way.

"You know the backstory, and after what happened this morning I highly doubt any member of her family would want to see me again," Derek sighs, as I hear his pen hits his table.

"This can resolve the conflict," Jason quietly exclaims, "like Romeo and Juliet."

Jason seriously didn't compare Derek and I to Romeo and Juliet did he? He does realise that their story is a tragedy.

"Do you realise their story is a tragedy?" Derek questions.

I think Derek and I need to talk after school again.

When the end of the day comes, I make my way out of the girls' locker room and quickly spot Derek walking across the field, heading home. "Derek!" I yell at him. I run down the bleachers and onto the field which is difficult with my bag on my back and not using my super speed.

"What?" He asks, turning around and rolling his eyes. I inhale deeply just to calm myself before we have this talk.

"What was that from before?" I ask, dropping my bag from my shoulders, "the electric feeling, when we touch."

"Nothing, forget it," he grumbles, turning away. I grab his hand and turn him back to face me, the sparks shooting through my body again, this time stronger leaving me slightly trembling.

Derek looks down at my hand in his then back up at me, his brows furrowed and a small frown on his face. He can feel me shaking and seems almost worried. "Don't...don't lie to me," I beg him in a soft tone while looking into his eyes, they flash purple for a second but seemed to have no effect on him.

"Shit," I curse under my breath, quickly looking away. I can't control it still, after having my power for almost all my life and I still struggle with control over it.

"So you swear now?" Derek mocks in disbelief. He steps slightly closer to me as I look up at him, we hold eye contact as my heart rate picks up and the sun casts a glow over Dereks' face. The way his brown eyes almost seem to glow yellow in the sunlight like golden rays surrounding a night sky, it's hypnotising in a way.

"I do it without people knowing," I say, trying to sound confident but it comes out as more of a whisper.

"Stop with the confidence act, that isn't who you are Evangeline," He said in a low voice, his fingers coming up to my face, stroking my face lightly just like yesterday.

Him saying my full name resides within me, like a cool breeze on a cold but clear night, and I haven't heard it from him in three years. It's comforting, like the bond we have was never really lost.

Something suddenly changes behind his eyes and he is no longer captivated, his eyes suddenly turn cold as the sunlight leaves his face and he removes his hand from my face. "You want to know, find someone else because I'm not your guy, I'm not what you want," his voice strident, taking me aback.

"Then how come you haven't taken your hand away?"

He looks down at our hands still together, like he almost forgot. He pulls his hand back and looks at me with annoyance before swivelling around and storming off. "What are you avoiding telling me!?" I shout at his retreating figure.

"What won't you tell me!?" I yell, holding back tears of anger as my fists ball at my sides. "What are you so afraid of!?" He suddenly stops in his tracks and I quickly shut my mouth.

He whips around, fury consuming him head to toe. "Why do you want to know so badly!?" He yells, slowly walking back to me. "Instead of telling you, I could show you!" He shouts, marching over.

My lips are pressed tightly together as I try to keep my face void of any emotion so he can't tell his argument is upsetting me. "Is that what you want?" He asks, stopping in front of me, our chests almost touching.

His anger seems to have flattened out as he looks down at me, his eyes are brimmed with tears as well and he looks more worried than angry anymore. My lips tremble slightly as he stares down at me with such an intense yet soft gaze, I am completely at his mercy.

His eyes searched my face and landed on my trembling lips, his hand lightly touches my face as his eyes quickly fill with worry as his eyebrows knitted in frustration. His hand slowly moves under my chin and he holds me there, his hold is gentle like he is afraid of breaking me, like I'm glass.

I cast my gaze down to avoid his look of pity. "Evangeline," Dereks' voice softly says, "look at me," his fingers lightly push my chin up and my eyes quickly flick to his.

"Don't be afraid. I would never hurt you," he whispers, wiping a lone tear that had made its way down my face away.

He tilts my chin slightly higher, looking at my lips then back at me, silently asking if he can kiss me. I nod slightly, too afraid to trust my words. He slowly brings his lips down to mine, my eyes slowly flutter shut just before our lips connect.

It feels like a jolt of electricity is sent right through me, all the way down to the tips of my fingers, we hold it there for a second savouring the moment. Dereks' other hand holds my waist lightly and pulls me in, our lips move slowly in sync like they were meant to do this.

My hands reach up and hold onto his jacket trying to keep him close, afraid he'll disappear like when we were younger, now kissing him deeper, more passionately as it feels like the world disappears beneath us, only him and I. But this only lasts a few moments before Derek quickly pulls away and takes a few steps back, leaving me feeling cold and betrayed.

"I'm sorry," he mutters looking at the ground then back at me, "that was a mistake." My heart wrenches at that, the wind is knocked from my lungs like somebody just punched me but my face remains blank.

Derek turns around, going to walk away, he turns his head back around to take one last look at me before running away. I'm left standing there in the middle of the field as I watch him disappear into the trees, a tear slowly makes its way down my face but I angrily wipe it away.

I pick up my school bag and slowly make my way off the field, I pull out my phone and text my dad.

DAD:

Evangeline: I'm going to be staying at Karas' tonight, history homework

Dad: Okay

Typical dad reply. As I make my way towards Karas' place I also send her a text.

KARA:

Evangeline: Can I stay the night?

Kara: Uhhh obviously.  No need to ask, mum's made cookies so we can eat those within five minutes and I can tell you what a dick Nathan has been

I chuckle as Karas' reply and put my phone away as I walk down the street, thinking over the event that happened less than five minutes ago. Boys suck, especially ones named Derek Lightwood.

When I get to Karas' I walk in without knocking, taking off my shoes I leave them at the door. As I walk by the kitchen I can smell Miss Martin's amazing cooking, "hey Miss Martin, smelling good."

"Oh! Evangeline darling!" Hazel, or Miss Martin, calls from the kitchen. She quickly walks out of the kitchen with a plate full of chocolate chip cookies.

"Kara said you two would need these," she smiles, handing me the plate. I smile and thank her then make my way upstairs to Karas' room.

Her door is already open for me and I'm greeted with her familiar bedroom. It's nowhere near as big as my own by it is cosy and feels like her own little getaway home as she calls it.

Her bed is smacked in the middle facing her wardrobe with a dark blue tapestry behind her headboard, next to it is her white vanity and a bunch of different pillows line that wall. On the other side is a fairy light curtain with pictures of friends and family, fake vines also framing it.

In the corner is her bookshelf that is lined with books and planets. Along that wall is a mini blue couch with many pillows and blankets, next to that two blue and purple bean bags and a small rack of clothes and more pillows. More fairy lights also wrap around the top of the room.

Kara is already dressed in her night shorts and a hoodie with her hair done up in a tragic messy bun. "Okay so let me-" she starts but when she looks over at me her face falls.

"What the Hell is wrong with you? Your eyes are puffy and you look like someone just ran over the dog you don't have," she says as I place the cookies on her vanity.

"Boys are annoying," I groan, flopping onto her bed.

"Oh I know, that's just a fact of life honey," she states, rolling her eyes, "but why do you say that?"

"Derek and I talked after school-" she gasps- "it didn't go well, then it did, then it didn't," I tell, a frown on my face as Kara leans over me to grab a cookie.

"Go on," she says through a mouthful of cookies.

"We were arguing, then kissing, then he left," I huff, crossing arms.

I hear Kara start spluttering beside me, I quickly sit up and she looks like she's about to die and her eyes are wide. "You what!?" She yells.

"Kissed, and I enjoyed it, a lot," I mumble.

Karas' face breaks out into a wide smile before she starts screaming and giggling, she punches the air with her cookie and starts saying 'yes' over and over again, her mum tells her to shut up and Kara finally stops giggling.

She looks at me, a wide smile on her face while I stare at her wide-eyed. At least something is still normal, my best friend being a psychopath. "My OTP," she giggles to herself, bouncing up and down.

"What?" I ask her in disbelief. Is this psychopath serious?

"OTP, One true pairing," she starts but I just look at her confused. "God women, do I have to spell it out for you? I've been shipping you and Derek since you guys were like eleven," she giggles.

"But he stormed off afterwards?" I question, Kara just flicks her hand to the side.

"Minor details," she muses, "you have the best boy analyzer right here, I got you."

Kara pretends to flick her hair over her shoulder even though it's tied in her messy bun with her favourite blue scrunchie. "But for now, bring it in, I'm so proud of you for having your first kiss," she says pretending to wipe a tear from her eye.

She holds open her arms and I can't help but move closer and let her hug me tightly. "Have I ever told you you're a psychopath?" I chuckle.

"Almost every day since you learned what the word meant in sixth grade," she laughs as we pull away. "But my God, let me tell you about Nathan."
