Come On Babe, It's Just A Game*

It had only been a few days since Evangeline had the accident and suddenly became comatose, but it felt like forever. Her family won't even tell me what's happening to her; she just went down on the floor of her brother's bathroom and has been unmoving since then.

Kara doesn't know what's wrong with her either, and we're all starting to worry. Her brothers haven't shown up to school too, it's Tuesday now and noting. I slam my locker shut after putting away my last period books ready to head to lunch.

"Hey! Derek!" A voice comes from down the hallway.

I turn to see Izzy bouncing towards me, a big grin on her face. I am not in the mood for her preppy attitude right now.

"What do you want, Izzy?" I ask her, leaning against my locker.

She stops a bit too close to comfort for me and smiles up at me. "Um, I just haven't seen Eve-" I try so hard not to correct her on not using Evangeline's full name- "around lately and was wondering, did anything happen with you two?" She asks, tracing her finger down my arm.

I grab her finger and remove it from my body before re-crossing my arms. "No, we are fine, Evangeline-" I emphasize her name- "is just sick," I tell her.

"Oh," she smiles, brushing a strand of her dark hair behind her ear, "guess that rumours aren't true, but while I have you..." she trails off.

I stand up straight and drop my arms. In a matter of seconds, Izzy has me pinned against the lockers without even touching me, "Izzy what the fu-"

I sharply gasp in as something is plunged into my chest. I look down and see her hand, wrist deep in my chest, and I can feel her fingers brushing against my heart. She uses her free hand and tilts my chin to look up at her, and she is smirking at my reaction, eyes glowing yellow.

No way...

"Listen closely Derek," Izzy whispers, pressing her body into mine, placing her lips close to my ear, "you and your little crew of idiots need to stop sticking your noses in our business. X is more polite when asking, but I'm not, so back off before I take out one of you next, not just the pizza guy."

She pulls away, removing her hand from my chest. I fall to the ground, gasping for air as I watch her walk away, this isn't good. Looking down at my chest I realise it's like nothing happened, no way...

I return to school on Thursday after taking all of Wednesday to recover. My parents explained what happened to me, but I still had unanswered questions.

"So what happened to you Evangeline?" Damon asks, taking a bite of his chocolate muffin.

Derek holds my hand tightly, still no use to the fact that I've changed a bit. "My parents said that it was a fifty-fifty chance of it happening but that I'm fine," I start my explanation, taking a sip of my drink.

"You all know how the other night I explained what Shadows were?" I ask and everyone nods, "well my dad would have passed that gene down to my brothers and I. They suspect after having another 'attack' it triggered the transformation."

Everyone looks a bit confused and seems to be doubtful. "Apparently, it didn't have that much of an effect on me, since I was already a combination of two different species but over time certain abilities will show up," I try to explain, obviously this is a shortened version.

Derek said I felt colder than usual, that the air around me was also cold, and that I gave off a darker aura. My family noticed it too, and I felt it like there was now darkness lurking in my mind that I couldn't shake, something dark was following me that left me uneasy, but I don't think that was linked to my sudden transformation.

"But on another note," Derek speaks up, I look up at him, his face is more serious than usual, "Izzy isn't who we thought she was."

"Who is she then?" Mya asks, feeding Kara a baby carrot but looking very serious.

"Ismey," I blurt out, shocking myself. Everyone looks at me confused, which is understandable; I don't even know how I know her real name.

"Right...Ismey..." Derek trails off, looking at me than the rest of the group, "she threatened me the other day, about X not stopping, and her eyes were yellow, it's got to be her."

Everyone nods at this fact as Jason pulls out a little notepad, he flicks to a page and writes something down. I am not going to question it.

The bell suddenly goes, breaking the tension at the table. Derek, Mya and I walk with each other to P.E class then break off into the dressing rooms. I pull on a black tank top and leggings, then tie my hair into a ponytail, as I'm doing my shoelaces up I look up at Mya who is pulling on her shirt.

"Is that Kara's ?" I ask her, standing up straight.

Mya blushes and nods, I tease her about it as we shove our things into the lockers and make our way out onto the field. As we walk down the bleachers, I see that the soccer nets set out, great.

Derek walks over to us, placing a kiss on my forehead as everyone slowly trickles onto the field. Mrs Dubois walks out with her whistle and clipboard in hand, she calls out Derek's name and tells him he's the captain of one team and that I'm the captain of the other.

Derek and I walk to either side of Mrs Dubois, glaring playfully at each other. Everyone seems a bit tense knowing this is going to be an exciting soccer match considering Derek and I are on different teams.

"Nothing like some friendly rivalry!" Mrs Dubois shouts, "please pick your teams, ladies, first!"

I love my boyfriend, I really do, but he's a bit of an idiot considering he doesn't know that we have both the boys and girls soccer captains in our class. I am so going to beat Derek at this. "Deigo!"

The boys' captain walks over to my side and smiles at me, he knows what I'm doing. Derek picks Mya thinking it will get under my skin, he grins wickedly at me, but I smile and wave sweetly at him. "Cecile!"

The girls' captain jogs over to my team and greets Diego and me. This goes back and forth for a while and Derek has picked mostly people from the football team, I, however, have a good mix of people who are good at sports similar to soccer.

The teacher makes us do a coin flip once everyone gets out onto the field. "You sure you're going to be alright losing my love?" Derek questions as the coin flips.

"Only in your wildest dreams darling," I smile as it lands on heads. I kick the ball away from him and begin running at a human speed, Derek close by.

We're already halfway through the game but so far my team is winning, 2-0. Derek kicks off, flying past me. However, Diego gets it back from him and starts running it back down our end, I follow Cecile down the field as the ball is passed to her. Before one of the players on Derek's team can get the ball she kicks it to me.

I'm almost at the goal when Derek comes out of nowhere and kicks the ball away from me to his teammate, making us both land on our asses.

"I hate you," I mumble as he stands back up.

"Come on babe, it's just a game," Derek laughs as he sticks his hand out and helps me up.

I reluctantly take it just as cheers come from the other end of the field, dammit, they scored. Derek gives me a childish grin, then presses a kiss to my cheek before running off. I roll my eyes but smile at the same time, he's an idiot but he's my idiot.

2-1, with ten minutes left our team has this game in the bag. I sarcastically smile at Derek who looks very focused on the same, he flips me the bird just as the whistle blows. Caitlin, a girl on my team, kicks me the ball, Derek is coming right at me as I dribble it down to the goal, I smile to myself seeing Diego ready to get the ball from behind Derek.

I smile to myself. Just before Derek gets to me, I kick the ball between his legs and to Diego, I gracefully spin past Derek but get stopped by his hands on my waist. He turns me to face him as my heart races, he looks down at me, a stupid grin on his face.

"Let me go," I tell him, trying to push myself away from him. That only makes Derek's grip tighten.

He smiles and looks past me to the teams, I turn in his arms to see one of his players, Riley, making his way back down the field with the ball. I snap around to Derek and try to free myself from his hold but it doesn't work.

I can feel my frustration growing inside of myself, soon my hands are cold like ice and without another thought, I hit Derek on the chest one last time. His hands suddenly leave my waist as I watch his body go flying four meters across the field, I gasp in shock as Derek lies there for a second.

I run over to him, ignoring the cheering of the other team as the whistle blows. I drop down beside him to make sure he's okay, I don't think anybody else saw what happened which is good. I reach my hands out to touch his face but quickly pull them back.

I look down at my hands in shock, they look like they've been dipped in black paint. I'm so caught up in myself that I don't notice Mya running up to us, she puts her hand on my shoulder and I jump, hiding my hands.

"What happened? Is Derek okay?" She asks, kneeling beside us.

As if on cue Derek groans and slowly sits up. "God Eve, how hard did you shove me?" He chuckles, straining a bit and rubbing his head.

Derek grabs my hands and chuckles again, I go wide-eyed and look at my hands, but they are normal again. What has happened to me? I've never seen this before.

Just then the bell rings, we all walk back into the locker rooms to grab our stuff and leave. Mya talks about some idiots who are in her physics class who keep making rude comments to her, but I don't hear most of it, I keep thinking back to what I did.

I could feel this cold feeling rushing down and into my hands just before Derek went flying, and I remember feeling good about pushing him off me, like I wanted to hurt him. But the feeling was gone as soon as it came, and the way my hands were pitch black, odd.

"Evangeline? You there?" Mya shakes my shoulder.

I quickly snap out of it and look at her, she arches an eyebrow at me looking for an answer. I quickly slam the locker closed and smile, "yeah, I'm good. Let's go."

I don't wait for her reply before turning and walking out of the locker room to meet up with my friends. But I can't seem to shake this feeling that something is very wrong with me, that it isn't anything good.

Friday morning I meet all my friends at my neighbourhood gate, as we have done every morning, ready to walk to school. I greet Mya and Kara with a quick hug before linking hands with Derek as we all walk to school, this morning however, Damon wasn't with us. Odd.

Jason is practically bouncing along the sidewalk and I can tell he has something to say. "Jason, spill it already," I tell him, rolling my eyes.

Jason turns around, grinning from ear to ear as he walks backwards. "Well my lovely, amazing friends, I may have found a clue!" He exclaims, bouncing like crazy now.

"Are you going to tell us what it is?" Mya questions him, spinning Kara around as we walk.

"I'm glad you asked dear Mya," Jason smiles, booping Mya's nose. "It's just some old yearbooks I found in the Lightwood's storage," Jason smiles to himself.

We all walk in the school gates but slow down as we approach a small crowd circling something. I look up at Derek, brows knitted together about to ask him if he knows what's up but he looks down at me with the same expression.

As we get closer I can hear the sound of a fist making contact with somebody's cheek, another fight, really? What idiots are at it this time? All of us manoeuvre our way to the front to see who's fighting, and once we do I roll my eyes, it's our idiot.

"Call me a pussy one more time! I dare you!" Damon shouts, slamming his fist into the face of this skinny blonde kid.

The kid's nose is bleeding heavily already and his right eye is almost swollen shut, he takes another hit from Damon and falls to the ground. I got to look up at Derek but his hand has already left mine, I watch as Derek and Jason make their way over to Damon.

Jason grabs Damon's arms and pulls them behind his back, effectively holding him back. Derek steps in front of him and gets right up into an angry Damon's face. Damon glares at Derek who is speaking lowly but in a harsh tone to him, Damon tries to break free of Jason's hold but is held back.

Derek whispers something again and I can see his eyes go red, wait red? Damon clenches his jaw tightly, fists bawling together. Derek straightens himself back up and Jason lets Damon go who storms off but not before pausing and turning back around to face me.

His eyes are glowing green, I gasp but Damon sharply turns around and walks off. I look at the kid who Damon beat up, he's being helped up by his friends and most likely taken to the nurse.

Something hasn't been right with Damon for a while, I can't tell what but he's keeping something from us, I just know it.

Lunchtime eventually rolls around and that nagging feeling from this morning still hasn't gone away. Damon didn't show up to English so I just walked with Jason to the cafeteria. Once we get there all our friends are waiting for us, I sit down next to Derek who turns himself so I'm sitting between his legs.

"I missed you," he mumbles, pulling me into a tight hug and inhaling deeply.

I giggle lightly and turn to look at him, placing a small kiss on his lips before grabbing my lunch. Derek has managed to take that uneasy feeling away which I'm grateful for.

"So Jason, are you going to tell us more?" Mya asks her arms around Kara who is playing with Mya's hair.

Jason grabs his school bag and slams it down onto the table. "I'm glad you asked," he smiles, pulling a big binder out of his bag, "I asked the Lightwoods if I could have their last year of high school yearbook and I photocopied every page."

"So that's what he was doing yesterday," Derek mumbles to himself.

Jason then pulls out a pencil case and dumps out almost thirty pens of two different colours, black and red. "Now before everyone can take some pages, what do we know about X?"

"Green eyes," I say, twirling my straw between my fingertips before taking a sip.

Jason brings out that little notebook again and writes what I said.

"He's male, last name is a colour," Kara pipes up. Jason writes that down.

He closes his little notebook, sticking in in his jacket pocket again. Just then Damon sits down at the table, arms crossed and his jaw clenched, but he refuses to look up from the table. Everyone looks at each other nervously, worried that if someone says something wrong Damon will go off like a bomb.

"Anything to add Damon?" I cautiously ask him, my voice soft.

He turns his head to look at me, face blank, then looks back down at the table, this time scratching at the peeling paint. Nevermind then. I look up at Derek who shrugs, something is off about Damon but I can't figure out what, he's usually so collected and kind.

"Sleepover at my place?" I suggest out of the blue, "Sunday? And then we can walk to school together?"

Everyone relaxes and nods at the idea, just as the bell rings for last period. We need something to take the edge off and I'm sure a sleepover will work.
