The sun was now shining through the clouds, which had parted to let the bright light wake the whole town as the bells rang, the birds flying from the sudden noise. The people were slowly walking down through the streets, their faces showing their curiosity as they arrived at the centre of the town, the market already half ready for the busy day to come, the bright coloured stalls contrasting with the stony floor, the lines of the carriages and horses that had passed evident in the wet ground.
It was time.
The mute girl, the one who had never been given a name because she was bound to become me the moment I made a bad decision or was caught, the only girl who wasn't allowed to go outside unless supervised, the one who knew she would never live long because of me, yet still happily kept me company... That girl, along with all her sweetness and pureness, was going to be executed because of me, and there was nothing I could do about it as she stood on the stage, guards surrounding her and the crowd slowly walking up towards them.
After a few minutes lying on the rooftop of a house, I decided to move a bit closer, just so, in case she saw me, I could give her my last sorry goodbye.
I felt like crying.
Usually, when I had to kill someone, I had no emotional attachments, and assassinated the person for a cause. But now, sitting on top of the wooden roof looking down at the town centre, a girl with the same hair, more or less same eyes and figure, standing on the stage, her head hung low as she stayed unmoved, even when the townsfolk shouted at her, crying out to God for letting the devil stay in their town, I felt horrible, the guilt and sadness mixing into an emotional soup only the strongest warriors could withstand.
And I was a warrior.
You have to make it through, I told myself, if not for you, for all the sacrifices you and everyone around you has had to do to reach this moment.
Peering over the ledge of the rotting wood, I laid myself down, getting ready for what was to come.
"Everett Glass, you are being condemned for attempted assassination on our Duke, for going against our Lord and his wishes, and for joining the darkside with the devil. You are to be hanged,"
No way, I thought sarcastically, contemplating in horror as they pushed her forwards towards the rope, the trap underneath her small feet wobbling a bit.
As they strapped her arms to her body, along with her dress, so that the onlookers couldn't see what was underneath her dirty green dress, I saw a look of determination on her face, before they covered it with a white bag.
I couldn't look.
Turning around, I climbed down from the rooftop, walking away from the cheering crowd as my friend struggled for air, the tears that had been threatening to fall now rolling down my cheeks like rivers.
"Everett," A soft voice called, making me look up.
"Your highness," I sniffed, following her into the dark alley and giving her a hug, "I'm going to miss you,".
She looked taken aback for a second, before hugging me back, and whispering, "I will too. But you've done your part, now you can go and live your own life!" She tried cheering me up.
I was out.
I no longer had to break myself by killing people.
I finally had the chance to live for myself, knowing I had done something, something good, for the future. Knowing I had been part of a massive plan to get women's rights equal to the ones men had.
"Yes, I can," I sniffed, still holding onto her tight dress, the complete opposite of my light dress that let me wear trousers underneath.
"And you can find yourself a loving husband, instead of that bastard you had to call husband for a few days," She said, winking.
I let out a tired laugh, one filled with sadness, even thought I was trying extremely hard to hide it. I knew what she would say.
"You have completed your destiny well,"
But I was wrong, "I love you,".
And, as hard as it was to admit it, I loved my queen too, even though because of her I had had to go through countless assassinations, had had to meet death at such a tender age, all for the sake of the future.
"I love you too,"
Before I knew it, the townsfolk were starting to walk back from the execution, so running back towards my house after saying my goodbyes, I leaped on my horse, the young mare happy to be able to move her legs.
"Let's go, Faith," I whispered, patting her black mane, looking at the town for one last time, "it's time to restart our life,"
