Chapter 39

"Wait a second wasn't he just with someone who looked like her?"

"Yeah, but her hair is longer and she looks a bit gloomy."

"Is he two timing?"

"No way he could've pulled her."

Fuutarou Uesugi cringed as he found himself in the same store that Nino left him in, this time with Miku.

"If she's not buying me the sweatshirt I'll do it myself." Miku shrugged and Fuutarou followed.

To be honest he wanted to go home. Mainly because he felt all the energy escape him and he had no will to do anything.

Maybe he felt guilty for calling Miku out to meet him and that's why he followed.

No that's not it.

He had been wanting to spend some time with her recently. He'd been with seemingly everyone else for a while, but rarely he was with Miku.

This was also a perfect opportunity for him to try and get more information about the past.

Because something was troubling him. Itsuki told him that she was the one he picked.

It's not like he didn't like her, in fact he did. He liked all of the quintuplets. Shoot, who didn't have a crush on those five.

But something didn't seem right.

Isn't it a bit strange that his memories returned and he could remember everything perfectly, yet he can't remember who he chose.

"Hey Miku..."

"Which one looks better on me?" The middle quintuplets alternated sweatshirts.

Blue or yellow.

"I'm probably not the best person you should ask about these things."

"Just pick."

"Blue I guess."

Miku put the yellow one back.

"Blue kinda is my color huh?" She smiled.

After she paid for the sweatshirt she and Fuutarou made their way through the mall again.

Aimlessly wandering for ten minutes Fuutarou decided to ask her something.

"Um... Miku?"

"Hm?"

"Did I choose someone... during our third year?"

"Why do you ask?" Her ears perked in curiosity.

He took a deep breath. "Because Itsuki said I did."

"Mm... and who did Itsuki say you picked."

"Her."

"She lied."

"Huh?"

"That night... was a weird one for sure." Miku sighed.

She relived the moment. The five of them patiently waited in their respective rooms. Waiting to see if Fuutarou would come and visit them.

Each with their own feelings of love for him.

Each wanting their feelings to be mutual.

But he never showed up.

No one was chosen that night.

"So I really didn't go and visit anyone. That makes sense, but why would Itsuki make it up?" Fuutarou asked thoughtfully.

Miku's eyes closed slowly before turning and walking toward the exit.

"I'm about to find out."

Fuutarou watched her fade away into the crowd.

While it was true that he never got to visit any of the girls in their respective rooms, there was still one problem.

He was going to give an answer.

He had the person in mind picked out.

But why now... why couldn't he remember?

In the back of his mind he couldn't get that thought out of his head. Maybe Itsuki was telling the truth.

He had always had a seemingly close connection with her, even after the accident. It's quite possible that it was her he had in mind.

Itsuki Nakano sat in her room quietly studying. It was only a few more days living back at the old house before they were permitted to move back to the school apartments.

Suddenly outside of her room she heard a voice.

"Huh?! Fuutarou are you serious?" Miku's voice rang outside of her door.

Itsuki continued on, it was nothing of importance to her. After all it's not like-

"You remember who you were going to choose?!"

Okay now Itsuki was all ears.

"Mhm... w-wait why would Itsuki do that?" Miku asked causing her younger sister to jump. "Why would she lie and say that she was the one you chose?"

Itsuki hands began to sweat. She was found out. And she couldn't believe Fuutarou would do this to her.

More importantly... how did he remember?

Ichika's words rang inside her head.

I'll find out eventually...

She moved closer to her door trying to get a better listen.

"No no, you don't need to ask her Fuutarou."

Itsuki was now leaning on her door with her ear pressed against the wall.

Suddenly the door opened. Itsuki whose weight was already leaning out the door quickly fell down.

She looked up to see Miku smirking at her, no cellphone in sight.

She had been played.

"-Because I'm going to find out..."

Fuutarou closed his textbook. He had finally finished his study session and was ready to go back to the quintuplets place.

As he hopped on the elevator awaiting the long thirty floor journey, he thought about everything that had happened in recent months.

Things had seemingly gotten back to normal between him and the quintuplets.

They were friends. More than the teacher and student relationship they began with.

Maybe even more than friends.

But why did it still seem a bit off. Something unsettling when he was with all five of them.

When it was just one of the girls it felt alright, but when more and more are together it felt weird.

Was this a sign telling him he had to choose?

Wait... he was getting ahead of himself. He didn't even know if any of them liked him.

But their feelings were still the same no?

It's not like he can just ask them.

He reached the door to the apartment and found the key. Entering into the room he heard a couple of voices arguing.

Expecting it to be Nino and Miku again he continued forward.

"Yes I did tell Uesugi-kun that he picked me... because it's the best for us and him." Itsuki's voice rang in the room. "And I'll make him believe me to the point where he'll ask me out."

Fuutarou turned to see Itsuki stand up and go face to face with her sister.

"And I'll reject him and that will settle everything."

Hello I'm back from my break! The day this releases I will be free from my exams... most of them. Still going to try my best to upload weekly for you all!

Hopefully you all enjoyed and I'll see you all soon! Don't be afraid to also let me know if I suck at writing. You'll only slightly be hurting my feelings.
