They were alone, they lost their group.
Lucy was hurt, she couldn't fight no more. Natsu fight for Lucy with every fiber of his body.
But even someone powerful as Natsu couldn't last forever...
Natsu never told Lucy what would happen If they managed to kill zeref.
He didn't have the heart.
He couldn't.
He hated that fact so much.
But he knew. If he wanted her to be safe..
He would have to sacrifice himself.

What would Lucy think, what would she do if she found out.
Would she be afraid? Would she call him a monster? Would she stop loving him?
Yes. Natsu knew that she loved him. He could tell by the way here eyes twinkled when she saw him, or the blush on her cheeks when he complimented her. And of course, him being a dragon slayer, .. Well let's just say he has his ways.

After all, she did want an adventure....

Not to mentioned him being in heat, and as dragons only have one true mate, he couldn't just die, he couldn't just leave her.
