A/n: I actually plan on doing a mermaid Grell cosplay lol.

L was always a little strange, you knew that. You knew he had secrets, major ones, you understand that people have things to keep to themselves but L took it to another level. It was today you found that out.

While working around HQ, Matsuda managed to bump into him and spill water all over him.

"SORRY!" He exclaimed.

"Be more careful please, I'll be back"

You watched as L walked out of the room, obviously to get a new shirt, but what you noticed is that as soon as he left the room, he sprinted at full speed down the hall and slammed the door behind him.

Something was wrong. It wasn't like L.

You got up and wandered down the hall, hearing a small 'God damnit' behind the door. Without thinking you knocked.

"You alright?" You said.

"I-I'm fine, just get back to work"

You left, but knew something was up. You decided to do a little investigation of your own. All day you kept a close eye on L and at sunset, he said he was going out to buy more candy. Not unusual for L, but you decided to follow him anyway.

Instead of going into the city, he ended up at the beach. Odd...

You watched as he ran down the jetty, not thinking twice and dove in. Of course this made you shocked, what the hall was he doing. You ran down the jetty and looked into the water, it was like he as never there. Until you saw it, something glimmering in the water, something shiny and a deep shade of blue.

"What is that?" You questioned.

When he heard footsteps on the jetty above him, he hid underneath the jetty and under the water, hoping no one would see his true form. It was when he heard your voice he began to panic. That was until...

You leaned down to get a closer look at the shimmer when your hand slipped off the side of the jetty, causing you to fall and hit your head on the way down. You landed in the water with a splash, felling yourself sink. As you began to black out, you saw that same shimmer and everything faded.

After a while you felt uncomfortable sand beneath you, but you could breath and you weren't sinking. You felt a throbbing pain in your head, but a gentle touch on your cheek.

You managed to open your eyes and your vision cleared to see that same mysterious detective looking down at you.

"What the- what happened?"

"Oh thank god, I thought you drowned..." he said.

You sat up and found you were on a beach, a very secluded and empty one too. You turned to see L sitting beside you, wait- why is he shirtless? And WHY DOES HE HAVE A BLUE TAIL?

"Wha- I'm hallucinating, I must be"

He sighed and looked down at his tail.

"No... you're not, it's very real" he said.

"But-"

"Let me explain. I knew you were suspicious... I don't blame you. And I knew you were following me, but I didn't think you'd follow me all the way to the beach... when I heard you walking on the jetty I hid under it, that shimmer was my tail and you slipped off the jetty and fell in, I didn't want you to down so I bough you here..." he said.

Once you'd wrapped your head around the fact that L wasn't human you began to get very curious.

"So, you're a merman? So you are on land why?"

"Because I didn't have a place to call home so I wandered onto land as a kid and was taken to an orphanage where I was trained to be a detective and here I am" he said.

"So it's when you touch water?"

"Yep"

"Can you talk to dolphins?!"

"Kind of..."

"THIS IS SO COOL! Why didn't you tell me?!" You said.

"I didn't want anyone to run lab tests on me"

"Reasonable excuse... but, aren't mermaids and mermen evil, that's what folklore says" you said.

"Folk lore is wrong, were just humans with tails, why aren't you creeped out by this?" He said.

"It's interesting... I like it"

There was an awkward silence.

"Thanks for saving me..."

"I couldn't watch you die..." he blushed.

"I owe you one fish boy"

And with those words you leaned in and kissed him on the cheek.
