Nishinoya's first year at Karasuno high school

Daichi had been the first one to notice something off about Kiyoko. She wasn't talking to them as much as she usually did, and looked a lot sadder as well. He went to Asahi and Suga with his concerns at first, then with their help confronted her. They had run through lists and lists of possibilities of what could be wrong. Very little could make Kiyoko noticeably sad. When they asked her what was wrong, she started to cry and pulled down her sleeve to reveal the date imprinted on her skin:

It was April 20. Kiyoko's soulmate had died ten days prior.

Yuu had stopped wearing his hair up. It took too long to do and Asahi liked it more when it was down anyway. Upon hearing this, Yuu had said, "Well do you want to wear your hair down? I will if you will." Asahi had laughed and brushed the offer off. That sound was worth more than any precious treasure to Yuu.

His laughter. It was so beautiful.

Soon after, Daichi had told the team privately what had happened upon Kiyoko's request. They had all decided to chip in on a get well basket without complaint. Nishinoya was glad the first years that would soon come didn't have to see this. It hurt him to see Kiyoko so lonely and lost. Hopefully someday soon she would find new happiness.

Nishinoya remembered that when Kiyoko had met Yachi, she was so happy. He hadn't been able to figure out why, until he saw her wrist:

There he had seen it, a new date, right there below the first one.

I'm so happy for her, he thought wistfully, a quick glance at the wrist reminding him of his own soulmate. I hope they're happy together. I'm sure they will be. Most people are happy with their soulmate. And Yachi's shed new light into Kiyoko's life. I get to see her smile. I get to see happiness in her eyes again.

Maybe some stories do work out.
But not mine.

He also reflected on when Yachi and Kiyoko had their first Christmas together.

"What do I do, Hinata-kun?" I've never had a soulmate before! What if she's sad the entire time? What if I mess up bad?"

Hinata had reassured her constantly that she would do great and everything would be fine. It had all worked out in the end, so that was nice.

Will it work out in the end for me?
I can't imagine living without Asahi.

Y'know....
If my soulmate weren't Asahi, I'd be jealous of the people who never met their soulmate. After all, you can't miss what you never had.

...Asahi is an angel.
I guess heaven wants him back.

What's gonna happen?

I don't know.

But I don't want to be Kiyoko.

I'm not gonna give him up that easy.

I won't let him go.

Kiyoko couldn't save her soulmate, but Noya would save his even if it cost him his life.
