Chapter 19: Giant Problems

Eve couldn't believe they'd made it through so much and even rescued Emrys—and Morph—only to find themselves cornered by the giants because of a harp. It was actually rather pathetic to have been undone by an instrument. Emrys stepped on the remains of the harp, crushing it beneath his foot. "Blast it," he said.

"Let's eat them!" Blunderbore said.

Cormoran nodded. "Raw!"

Eve started backing up uncertainly. "Emrys, they want to eat us raw," she told him.

"I'd rather gotten that impression myself, yes," Emrys answered. "I don't suppose you've got an idea how to stop it?"

Eve was about to answer when Blunderbore moved faster than she'd thought was possible. His meaty hand wrapped around her waist and picked her up. "Do something!" she shrieked at the frozen Emrys and Morph as she was lifted toward the giant's mouth.

Emrys unfroze and hurled a useless fireball at the giant's leg. It did nothing and Eve pounded at the giant's hand, desperate to avoid those large teeth. "HELP ME!" she screamed.

"Hold on, Eve!" Gwaine yelled. The giant tumbled abruptly, hitting the floor and releasing Eve. Emrys pulled her to safety as both Jack—who had been hiding in the corner—and Gwaine drew their swords. They decapitated Blunderbore before Cormoran's foot slammed into them, sending them flying backwards.

Morph grabbed Gwaine's fallen sword and took flight. Cormoran tried to snatch him out of the air, but the winged being was too quick for him and ducked out of the way. In the same motion, he flew up to Comoran's face and cut at his eye.

Rampion, on the ground, was trying to remove her hair from beneath Blunderbore. Apparently, she'd used it to trip him, but now it was caught beneath his corpse and she couldn't get it out. "Eve, little help?" she called.

Eve ran over to her, managing to avoid a grasping motion from Cormoran. He was a good deal slower than Blunderbore and was now working without an eye, thanks to Morph. Morph had little luck in getting to his other eye, though; he was currently being held in one hand by a wing. "Jack!" Morph yelled. "Catch!"

The giant killer jumped backwards as Morph hurled the sword down to him. "You were supposed to catch it," Morph pointed out. His free wing was beating furiously, trying to hold him up while the giant held his other wing.

Jack scooped it up and hurried out of the way as the giant once again tried to step on him. "Oh, right," he said sarcastically. "Catch that. You're throwing a great, pointy weapon at me! How the devil was I supposed to catch it?"

"Instead of arguing about that, help me kill this giant!" Rampion yelled at them. "Or are you just a useless, no-good—"

"No need to finish that, sweetheart," Jack replied. "I'm working on it."

Emrys drew Eve to the wall, out of the way. His magic wasn't doing anything to the giant, and Eve had nothing to use as a weapon. "I feel a little useless," she told him.

"I'm a man and I can't do anything either," Emrys said, apparently trying to agree with her. Eve slapped him. "Ow!"

Rampion wrapped her hair around the giant's ankles. Cormoran grabbed her, trying to lift her up as she made her hair go taut. "Do something!" she yelled at Gwaine and Jack.

"I agree!" Morph added, kicking at the giant's teeth as he tried to put the winged boy in his mouth.

Moving at the same time, Gwaine and Jack cut at the giant's ankle. With Rampion's help, they toppled the giant and cut at his neck. In another instant, Cormoran was dead. Morph pulled his wing from the dead giant's grasp, grimacing. "Ow," he muttered. The wing twitched as he stretched it out. "That hurts. Thanks for lending a hand."

Jack turned the sword in his hand and held it by the blade as he extended it towards Morph. "Here," he said. Once Morph had taken it, Jack grabbed the goose and ran a hand through his hair. "I'm off. My mum's probably waiting for me."

"Let her know we're on our way, won't you?" Rampion said. "She's watching our friend for us."

Jack shrugged. "Sure." Moving impulsively, he kissed Eve's cheek. "Good-bye, sweetheart. Don't be afraid to come looking for me if you're ever looking for a drink." The goose honked in an annoyed way, and Jack walked off.

Eve stared after him, a hand on her cheek where he'd kissed her. Emrys snorted. "Idiot." She turned to look at him in a puzzled manner, and he quickly moved past the subject of Jack. "Morph, you didn't say how you ended up annoying Nimueh."

Morph rubbed his nose. "I ... umm ... that's complicated," he said. Then he narrowed his eyes. "Are you trying to defeat her?"

"We're trying to rescue our parents," Rampion answered, looking at him carefully. "And ... yes. We're trying to defeat her."

"Interesting. If your parents couldn't take Nimueh on and avoid getting captured, what makes you think that you can?" Morph asked.

Eve narrowed her eyes. "How did you know our parents had been captured?" she demanded.

"Easy. I watched them. I was sent by my—by someone to keep an eye on them and keep them out of trouble. Long story short, Merlin saw me, blasted me with a fireball, and I was forced to retreat." Seeing the other children's disbelieving eyes, Morph rolled up the leg of his breeches to reveal the badly burned flesh beneath. "Don't ask me why he blasted me. It wasn't like I deserved it."

"If he blasted you," Emrys said, "you deserved it. But I suppose if you want to help us, you can come along."

Eve glared at him. "And since when did you become the leader of this group?"

"I'm not," Emrys answered. "But he and I were cellmates. You learn a lot about a person in prison."

Gwaine snorted in laughter. "I for one am willing to trust him if anti-social Emrys thinks he's alright," he put in before breaking off to chuckle.

Rampion shrugged. "I think, judging from our success rate, that we can use all the help we can get," she said.

Seeing the others were in agreement to allow Morph to join them, Eve capitulated. "Oh, very well. But I hope you're more useful than you were in the fight with the giants," she added.

Morph made a face. "I didn't notice that you were being very useful, either," he muttered under his breath.

It wasn't quiet enough for him, unfortunately. She turned on him. "Excuse me!" she said petulantly. "I didn't even have a weapon. You were the one with the sword!"

"I only had the sword because he dropped it," Morph pointed out, indicating Gwaine.

Gwaine ducked his head, looking embarrassed. "That is what happens when you get kicked in the stomach by a giant," he admitted.

"Understandable," Rampion agreed. "Now, can we stop arguing and go get Lana? I've had enough of this place."

When they were all in agreement, they followed Rampion to the giant stairs. It only took a moment for Eve and Emrys to come up with a plan to get them up the stairs. Morph flew Rampion to about four steps up and she lowered her hair down to the others. They proceeded in that manner until they reached the top of the steps and were able to leave the dungeons.

Once they were out of the dungeons, it was a simple matter to leave the castle behind as well. Outside, they walked across the cloud toward where the beanstalk was growing. Morph was limping on his burned leg and rubbed it, glaring at Emrys. "You sorcerers," he muttered. "You should talk before you throw, you know."

"If I'd hurled a fireball at you, it wouldn't have hurt too much," Emrys admitted. "I can only get the flames on my fingertips." He demonstrated, and the reddish-orange flames licked at his fingertips. They didn't reach the palm of his hand.

"Still," Gwaine said soothingly, "it's more than I can manage. I think you robbed all our parents' magic from me."

"We've been through this before," Emrys mumbled awkwardly.

Rampion twirled a strand of hair around her finger. "You two argue a lot," she noted.

Eve interrupted further conversation, fear coursing through her abruptly. "Wasn't there a beanstalk here before?" she asked.

Emrys pursed his lips. "Maybe this isn't the spot," he said.

"This is the spot," Rampion argued. "But there's no beanstalk."

Morph crossed his arms. "Either this isn't the spot or it is," he said. "If it's the former, then we need to keep looking. If it's the latter, it means the third giant found out we killed his brothers and trapped us up here."

"Third giant?" Eve said.

"Could it have been Jack?" Gwaine asked.

"The third giant's name is Rebecks," Morph explained. "Honestly, don't any of you read?" They all glared at him, and he relented. "Sorry. He's the biggest of the three, but he also has the fewest brains of the bunch. That's a plus, I suppose."

"Jack," Eve breathed. "Jack's gone back down the beanstalk. Do you suppose the giant grabbed him?"

"What about Lana and Iona?" Gwaine demanded. "Nobody warned them! The giant could've attacked them and taken them or eaten them. We've got to get down there and stop him!"

Rampion motioned to the hole with exaggerated annoyance. "Hello! We've got a problem. There's no blasted beanstalk to climb down!"

"I have wings," Morph volunteered. "I can take someone down, we can find Rebecks, stop him, and save people if need be. Oh, and if we can find another magic bean, we can plant it again and grow the beanstalk."

"But who'll go?" Emrys asked.

"It should be me," Gwaine said. "I can fight."

"Lana's my friend," Eve interrupted flatly. "I'll go. And I'll take the sword as well. I can use it well enough."

"Well enough to slay a giant?" Rampion asked.

Eve glared at her. "Yes."

Morph shrugged. "Works for me. You ready, Eve?"

She nodded wordlessly, and Morph wrapped his arm around her waist. Eve held on as Morph jumped down the hole and freefell towards the ground.
