V
Just as Ivar wanted he was crawling on the damp forest ground, bow and arrows strapped to his back. Eva been planning to take him hunting for a while just to help him get a taste of his old life, but she was worried about how he would move around.
Bringing a wheel chair would of been a dumb idea, but it wouldn't have matter because Ivar wouldn't agree to it, she could see why now. Eva was only along for the ride, she watched Ivar in his element, he was as skill with the bow and arrow as he was with the Axe. He tried to teach her a thing or two with the bow, but like he said, her arms were weak.
Eva had asked Joseph Tevin a local boy she went to school with who was known for his love of hunting to join them. Joseph was quite tall, sleek build, brown eyes and hair that had outgrown his normal faded hairstyle. She made sure to tell him to not bring any hunting guns, she kept imagining Ivar would unintentionally shoot her or Joseph. Or maybe even intentionally if in the wrong mood. She also told him to stay out of Ivars way if he wanted to get home in one piece and just follow his instructions.
Ivar killed two red deer, a boar and a wild sheep. In the end, Joseph got the job of carrying or dragging the game back to a spot where Ivar had chosen to butcher the meat. Eva couldn't help but be fascinated by how well Ivar could do such things with his disability.
As Eva was watching Ivar skinning the deer, Joseph sat next to her offering her some beef jerky. Eva shook her head but thanked him.
"That's one warrior over there," Joseph not one for silence, "where did you find him?"
Eva was a little uncomfortable, she wasn't prepared for these questions even though she knew they were unavoidable.
"I'm not sure," she replied avoiding Josephs gaze.
"So what's up with his legs?"
Eva was shocked with his bluntness.
"I'm not sure" she replied again still watching Ivar.
"Crazy he doesn't have any crutches or a wheelchair."
"Yeah, that's what I thought"
"But his upper body is amazing."
"Hmm..." Eva replied trying not to give anything away.
"That's a real man, all hands on and stuff, no guns," Joe complimented, "Its like he wasn't born in this period of time."
"That because he's not," she mutter too low for him to hear.
Eva wasn't good with small talk, she didn't have any friends and she was planning on keeping it that way. Joseph was only a means to an end and once this trip was over, she was planning on becoming strangers again.
Once Ivar was done butchering the meat, he looked over to Eva. He was covered in animal blood and Eva couldn't help but think if society hadn't become civilized he would be drenched in human blood. She shuddered and thought, 'that's what he actually wants."
Ivar felt content and even relieved to be out in the forest, doing something productive. Glad to be out of that large home and small backyard. He felt proud that he had something to put on the table for Eva to cook, something to do that didn't make him feel helpless and useless. Ivar couldn't help but send a little smile her way, in which she awkwardly waved back.
'Cute,' he thought.
Then he saw how close Joseph was sitting next to Eva and it angered him. His smile disappeared as fast as it came. Joseph paid no mind to Ivar, he was busy eating his beef jerky, content to be resting from all the heavy lifting.
Ivar grabbed for his axe and threw it between Eva and Joseph's head.
It was as if time had slowed down, Eva had just realized what Ivar was doing when the weapon left his hand.
"IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVAR," she screamed but it was too late.
Eva turned to look at Joseph who was still ignorant to the situation chewing on his beef jerky in slow motion. Joseph, in turn, turned to look at her until he saw the axe now a second away from his head.
"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" Joseph screamed.
By then time had sped up again and the axes blade skimmed right pass Josephs head and into the big Oak tree behind them.
Josephs right hand went straight to his head where he felt the axe had skimmed him. Feeling for blood but he could feel none. Eva quickly moved his hand and checked it for her self. There was definitely no blood, but now he had an awkward bald patch on the side of his head. Joseph looked onto his shoulder, only then did he realize what Eva saw when he saw a chunk of hair sitting there.
Ivar was not happy seeing Eva getting closer to help Joseph.
Though once Ivar saw Joseph's face fall even more once he learned of his new haircut, Ivar couldn't help the smug look that took over his face.
..........................................................................
On the way to Josephs house, Eva was apologizing profusely for Ivars behaviour, while Ivar sat quietly in the back seat acting oblivious. Once they arrived at Josephs house he asked for Eva to walk him to the door. He was worried for her safety, trying to convince her to stay with him and call her parents to pick her up. After explaining she was fine, he finally let her go with an arm squeeze telling her to be safe. She promised to text him that she was fine when she got home, for his sake.
The rest of the ride home Eva was silent, and so was Ivar.
Once she snuck Ivar threw the back door, she warmed some food up for him. Then she showered and jumped straight in bed.
Ivar showered soon after he ate and then laid down on his makeshift bed on the floor.
Ivar could hear from her irregular breathing that Eva was still awake. She couldn't sleep, she was too angry with Ivar. She was embarrassed of his behaviour and worried for Joseph. She couldn't believe how ungrateful Ivar was towards him. She was struggling all day to hold a friendly conversation with Joseph and only Ivar would be blind to see that. He had no reason to be jealous in every sense of the whole situation. Yet he can nearly kill their one acquaintance who willingly was their slave all day and think its okay.
"Eva."
Eva stayed silent, closing her eyes tighter as if to will herself to sleep.
"You will bed Joseph... no?"
'What the heck is he talking about?' she thought.
"I saw you two, talking of nonsense."
Eva was couldn't help but imagine Ivar glaring at her in her mind.
"You enjoy his company more than mine!" He said Irritated.
'He's so good at winding himself up' Eva thought, 'everything is always about him.'
"Is it because I am crippled?"
"Am I only half a man he is, that you can't even stand to.."
Before Ivar could even finish his sentence something hard hit him right in the face.
"SHUT! UP!" Eva screamed at the top of her lungs.
Eva was beyond furious to hear the rest of his self-pity comments.
Whatever was in reach Eva threw his way as hard as she could. She could hear her blood pumping in her ears, egging her on to relieve her frustration out on him.
Her phone, a lamp, three pillows and two hardcover books later she was out of ammo.
"YOU CAN JUST SHUT UP AND KEEP YOUR OWN PITY PARTY TO YOURSELF! YOU ARE JUST FREAKING UNBELIEVABLE AND BLOODY SELFISH AND STUPIDLY BLIND BY YOUR OWN JEALOUSY! GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ARSE OR GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Eva screeched.
Eva laid back down trying to control her breathing, welcoming the silence that followed after her mental breakdown.
A while later Ivar threw her pillows back onto her bed. Eva then heard Ivar crawling and the opening and closing of her door.
Eva was alone and up all night with her thoughts.
After all that had happened only one thing bugged her the most that night.
Eva knew she screamed loud enough that the whole neighbourhood had heard her.
Yet no one in her family came to check on her.
