By the time they made it back to the house, it nearly five o'clock in the morning. Chris drunkenly went back to his room and crashed on his bed. He didn't bother changing or going under the covers. Evalyn, on the other hand, was not tired. She went to her room, changed into her nightgown and sat on her bed. Leo jumped up next to her. What are you thinking? The cat asked. Evalyn stared out the window.
"Do you ever think we'll ever be able to go home again?" She said. "Because right now, I feel as if this is my fate. To be left here and never be picked up again." Evalyn sighed. Life was not treating her right. Her only wish was to go home to be with her parents, and Leo knew it.
All in good time, Leo said and began to purr. All in good time.

When Chris woke up a few hours later. He was feeling worse than ever before. Not because he didn't get a good night's sleep, but because of his conversation with Evalyn. He knew the reason why his parents left him in this dump, but his purpose was unclear. So who am I really? He kept asking himself as he ate his breakfast.
"What's up with you?" Evalyn asked him once they were alone in the garden. She had notice his strange behavior since they've returned from the lighthouse.
"What? Nothing. What makes you say that?" Chris asked. He sat on the bench in deep thought. Evalyn stood in front of him, arms crossed, not believing a single word. She tilted her head at him.
"This because of last night, isn't it?" She said. "You feel empty, don't you? Like you don't feel like you have a higher purpose in life, just because you're a half-blood?" Chris stared up at her in an amazement.
"Yeah. How did you guess?"
"Because I can read people, and you, are a open book, just spilling your emotion... it's sad really." She sat down next to him. "Do you wish to elaborate?" Chris sighed. He knew he wasn't getting out of this one.
"Fine. Alright. I'll bite." He gave. "Ever since I learned who, or what, I am, I just feel out of place. You even said it yourself. I can't exist. I'm not supposed to! I guess is what I'm really getting at here is that I hope to understand my past, so that maybe I can move on and maybe then I'll be able to find out who I am." Evalyn sat back, listening to his words. Leo jumped up on the bench and laid on her lap. She petted him absently.
"Mmmm." She thought. After a moment, an idea struck. "Hey. Doesn't this place have some kind of records of the children here or something?"
"Yeah." Chris said. "I think they're in Miss Lucy's office, why?"
"Because I think I know how to help you solve your little problem."

"This is insane!" Chris said. "What if we get caught! Miss Lucy will ground us for sure." It was in the late evening and most of everyone was finishing up dinner. Evalyn, Chris, and Leo snuck around the house and into Miss Lucy's office.
"Oh quit your whining." Evalyn said, opening the office door to see if anyone was in there, luckily, there wasn't. "I thought you liked to live dangerously.... Is the coast clear?" Leo came around the corner and nodded his head.
"Yes, but Miss Lucy is one scary cookie, must I remind you that." Evalyn rolled her eyes and slipped into the office, followed by Leo and then Chris, who was still uncertain about this. Miss Lucy's office was fairly large. It had a desk in the back center, its back against the window. A comfy office chair accompanied it. There was also two small chairs that sat in front of it. At the left side of the office was lined with filing cabinets. They hit the jackpot.
"Okay." Evalyn said, opening up a filing drawer and flipping through the folders. "If I know anything about filing cabinets, I would say that they are alphabetical by last name. Now here the million dollar question: what's your last name?"
"I—" began Chris. "—don't know." Evalyn raised an eyebrow at him. "Miss Lucy never tells anyone their last name. She doesn't tell because if we ever got adopted by a loving couple, our previous last names won't matter anymore because it would change. She won't tell you it until you're old enough to move out of here to be on your own." Chris bowed his head. He never felt so lost in his life. He didn't even know his own last name.
Leo jumped up on the desk. How about we look on the old hags computer? He suggested. If anything, she might have some type of record of her children on here. Evalyn nodded.
"Good thinking, Leo." Evalyn said, hopping into the office chair. Chris looked from Evalyn to Leo.
"What's a 'good thinking'?" Chris asked.
"Oh! Leo suggested that we look you up in her computer. Then maybe we can figure out your last name and who your parents are." Chris nodded and joined her on the other side of the desk, watching as she moved the mouse around. "Okay. Here we go." She said. "Files." Evalyn clicked on the file that said, "Children" and was brought to a page filled with first and last names of the children who are resident there. There were also pictures next to the names to put a face with the names. Evalyn found a handful of Chrises in the list, but none so far matching the picture.
"Wait!" Chris said. "Scroll back up, I saw something." Evalyn scrolled back up to see another Chris in the list. This time though, it was the Chris. The picture beside him confirmed it.
"Christopher... Jacobson." Evalyn said. "Age sixteen. Born August twelfth, two-thousand and one." She looked up at Chris. "Sound about right?"
"I guess so." Chris said. He looked over at the files. "And there is only one way to find out." He moved away from the desk and went to the filing drawer that had the letter "J" on it. Chris flipped through the files until he came over to the folder that said: "Jacobson, C", and pulled it out. He walked back to the desk and squeezed in the comfy chair next Evalyn, who scooted over for him.
Chris placed the folder on the desk and stared at it. "Well?" Evalyn said. "Aren't you going to open it?" Chris nodded and took in a deep breath.
"Here goes nothing." He said and flipped the folder open. In the folder had a few pictures of Chris in it. One was when he was baby, on its back was written: Christopher Jacobson, first day. Another once was him at seven years old. On the back was written his age to prove it. And there was one more of him at the age of twelve. Chris sat the pictures aside and picked up the pile of papers. Most of it was his social securities and all the other important stuff. Then there was his birth certificate. On it was his name, his full name, his birth date, and his parents signature. But when Chris looked at the line that was supposed to have his father's signature, there was none. It was left blank.
Chris felt a pang of disappointment. He sighed. "Hanna Jacobson." Evalyn said, reading the line with his mother's signature. "That's your mother's name." She looked at Chris and sensed his disappointment from not knowing his father's name. Evalyn took the stack of papers from Chris' hands and went through them herself. She came across a paperwork that signifies the completed adoption. Chris' mother sighed the bottom, but no father's name. When Evalyn moved the papers around something fell onto her lap. It was an envelope. "Hey," she said. "Check this out."
Evalyn handed the envelope to Chris. "I think this was meant for you." On the envelope's face was written in cursive: Christopher. Chris opened the envelope flap and pulled out a letter. Taking a deep breath, Chris unfold the letter and read it.

My Dearest Christopher,
You are probably wondering who I am? Why I left you in such a place? Who are you? Well, my son, I'm about to tell you. Christopher, you are no ordinary child. You are special, more special than most. And because of that specialty, I fear you are in great danger. I, as a mother, never wanted my child to be put in such danger. So I did the thing I know I will regret, I gave you up, and left you there, at that orphanage. But I am sure that a couple would adopt you and give you a home.
As for me, I will probably never see you again. I know I will be searched for and be brought to a place with no return. So please, I ask you that you move on from me and find happiness within yourself, but know that I did love you and still do! So never forget that.
For your father, I know you're wondering, is a special man just like you. His name is Simon Jacobson. He was on mission for his world, we met, fell in love, and had you. He was brave, strong, sweet, loving, and caring man who couldn't wait until you were born. But when I was pregnant with you, we were founded out. Your father was taken under arrest, but he did it on purpose, to give us time to escape and find somewhere safe for you and me. But, as I said, I knew our time together would be short, so once you were born, I gave you up. To protect you.
Even though I wish to write to you forever, I must leave you. I hope, with all my heart, you live a long happy life, fall in love, have your own family. And in the end, we all be reunited once again.

Love,
Your mother,
Hanna Jacobson.

A lump formed in the back of Chris' throat as he finished reading the letter his mother wrote to him. Evalyn squeezed his shoulder, having to read along with him. "I'm so sorry, Chris." She said. Chris nodded, not saying much. Looking at the letter one last time, he gently folded it and placed it back in its envelope. When he did that, he felt something else in there. He pulled it out and saw it was a photograph. A picture of his parents he realized. His mother and father stood together, arms wrapped around each other passionately.
His mother looked to be about in her twenties, blonde hair with brown milky eyes. She had tan skin and wore a sundress. Her smile was sweet and welcoming. His father was a tall man with black hair and green eyes that had a light tint to them. He had tanish skin and wore a t-shirt with cargo pants. His smile offered comfort and security. Chris put the photo back into the envelope. "You look like them." Evalyn offered. "I think they would be proud to see how far you've come." She smiled warmly at him.
Chris returned the smile. Taking the envelope, he stuffed it into his oversized pocket. "Well, well, well," said a voice from the doorway. "What do we have here?" Evalyn, Chris, and Leo all jumped. "You know," said Xavier, leaning on the doorway. "It looks like I'll be killing two birds with one stone."
