when hyuk gets injured, only the team captain can raise his spirits

When the halftime whistle sounded, Jinwoo couldn't have been happier to leave the field. As the rest of his team lumbered off to the benches to be doused in cold water or to join the ever-growing pile of sweaty bodies, the senior quickly swallowed a cup of electrolytes before dashing for the locker rooms. Anyone that passed him could see he was distressed, scared almost to the point of creating a web of anxiety to get trapped in.

And Jinwoo was; he was practically shaking out of worry as he careened around corners and burst through doors. He entered the empty locker room and scanned every inch of the concrete seats and green lockers before he found what he was looking for: his teammate curled up in the farthest corner, right leg spread out before him.

Jinwoo raced over to him and dropped to his knees. The sight almost brought tears to his eyes; his teammate - and fellow senior - had taken a nasty and deep cut to the shin. Instead of kicking the ball, their opponent struck his leg, creating a long gash that surely needed stitches. Jinwoo looked up at his teammate and saw his face twisted into a scowl, his lip pinned between his teeth.

"Oh Hyuk, I'm so sorry I wasn't behind you. Three other -"

"It's fine, Woo. I'm fine." He hissed out a curse when he scooted his leg closer to the lockers. He ruffled Jinwoo's dyed hair, so short and spiky white that it felt like the fake grass of the field, and that made Hyuk weakly grin.

"No you aren't. And why hasn't anyone come to patch you up! Do they really expect me to be okay with one of my teammates bleeding out. This is ridiculous..."

Jinwoo rambled and ranted, cursing the coaches and school nurse for not treating him immediately. He was a star player after all; Yang Hyuk, the best attacking midfielder in his grade, shit, his generation even. And Jinwoo was lucky - proud - to have Hyuk on his team. He was a confident player, never shied away from a challenge, and always knew how to lift his team's spirits, Jinwoo's especially. So the nurse just leaving him to wallow in his pain and blood ticked off Jinwoo to no end, and it shone through when he went and found some gauze and bandages to patch Hyuk up.

"Ow, fuck! Don't cut off the circulation to my leg!"

Jinwoo paused before cutting the gauze and switching to bandage wrap. "Sorry. I'm just pissed no one tended to you the second you were carried off the field."

"Well, you can have special orders for when I'm injured," Hyuk said, and it caused Jinwoo's cheeks to flush brighter than they were.

"I might as well." He snipped the bandage wrap and tucked the loose end under a loop, resting his hand on Hyuk's leg. "It's just...in the real world - shit, any other time a player gets injured you see them being tended too right on the field, or being carried inside to be treated. They pause the game and everything. But with you, they just carried you off, dropped you off here, and, by the looks of it, haven't come back to check on you."

Jinwoo stood up and sat by Hyuk's foot. "No I get that. It's been 15 minutes since the referees said they'd get the nurse." Hyuk looked up from his lap to see the older staring bewildered at him. "I'm all good now that you've come to save me. I've never seen you so worried."

Jinwoo looked away to hide his red face. "You're the star player. Our energizer. It's not the same without you." He dared to look back, and when he did, Hyuk had managed to swing his leg off the seat and move closer to Jinwoo. How he didn't hear, Jinwoo had no idea, for they were but a hands-width away.

   "You really think that huh?"

Jinwoo nodded, suddenly feeling much smaller under Hyuk's stare.

"I knew you favored me. It was obvious you liked me more than the others on the team."

Jinwoo jolted and slapped his face into his hands; his heart was thundering in his chest. "Was it really?"

"Oh yeah." Hyuk snickered when Jinwoo groaned and kicked his legs like a displeased child. "And frankly, I don't mind. I like it. Want it."

He heard shuffling and sounds of struggling, and when Jinwoo finally gathered the confidence to peer out his fingers, Hyuk had stood and was hobbling his way to the door. Jinwoo, in a sort of panicked and flustered frenzy, leaped up and snatched a crutch from against some other player's locker.

   "Hyuk!"

He turned and smiled, a smile so sweet yet so cunning that it made Jinwoo stutter.

"Here - Here. It'll be easier to walk with this, so you don't have to drag your feet through the mud."

He took the crutch and hooked it under his arm. Jinwoo grinned and griped Hyuk's left arm, helping him out of the locker room, down the hallway, and out onto the field. People in the stands started to whisper and gasp given that the star player was back on field patched up, but Jinwoo morphed their hushed murmurs and giggles towards him, and that made him blush harder than he already was.

"You know, I could have walked out on my own. You don't need to carry my weight if I'm too heavy for you."

Jinwoo blinked and gently set Hyuk down on the sideline. The setting sun caught his face and made it looked to be glazed in honey. "It's no hassle, really. I'm just helping a teammate out. My favorite teammate." The younger looked up and grinned bashfully while the older winked. "Also I'm not weak. Just because I wear a men's small doesn't mean I can't beat your ass during a practice game."

Hyuk giggled and laid the crutch across his lap. "I'd like to see you try, captain."

The title struck something within Jinwoo, a chord no one had ever touched; it made his chest bloom with warmth and, if it was even possible, make his cheeks feel scorching hot.

"Captain Park! Halftime is over, get your tiny ass out here!"

Jinwoo wanted to scream; just his luck. "Coming!"

He sent Hyuk a wide smile and a double wave before jogging back onto the field.

The rest of the game went by as fast as the soccer ball on the field. As the ball zipped between feet and over legs and through the air, so did the minutes, the hours. Before long, Jinwoo was the sweaty and exhausted mess he was prior to running to Hyuk, and it didn't help that the game was tied.

The referee placed the ball between the captains, one dressed in white, the other red. Jinwoo met the eyes of the opponent's captain and gave him a curt nod, and the other boy just scoffed. 'If he wants to play that way' he thought 'then we're going to give it to him.'

The whistle cut through the air almost as quick Jinwoo striking the ball off to his right. Hyuk was the star player of the team because of his unwavering determination and never-ending speed, always the one to count on to shoot the ball into the net. But Jinwoo made captain of Spire High School's soccer team because of his stature; Jinwoo was small and easily overlooked, and he used that to his advantage. He was able to weave through players like a snake, smooth and sharp, and he'd attack fast as lightning when they least expect it, firing a antagonistic smile as a tease that stung like venom. Aside from his natural leadership skills that granted his the title as captain, he was their team's ace, the player they could always count on to make the final kick.

And with the stadium lights shining down on him like a second sun, Jinwoo pivoted to block - and elbow in the ribs - a opposing fullbackand kick the ball into the net. The buzzer shook the stadium, the goalie was a second too late, and the ball thrust into the net.

Jinwoo's team erupted into a mess of cheers and guttural yells, scooping him into their arms and slapping his back so hard he winced. He looked upon each of his team's faces and smiled back, but slowly frowned as he didn't find the boy he was looking for. As if someone pricked him with a pin, Jinwoo jolted and fought his way out of the ring of sweaty soccer boys.

When he emerged, he looked up and instantly locked eyes with Hyuk across the field - leaning against his crutch with his free hand tangled in his hair. Jinwoo ran to him and leaped upon him, coiling his arms around the younger's neck and spilling out apologies and elated comments.

"I wish you were on field to experience it, it was such a rush." He plopped back to the ground and squeezed Hyuk's shoulders. "I'm just so happy."

"I can tell." Hyuk chuckled, and shuffled - well, stumbled because of his crutch - closer. "I wish I could hug you." Jinwoo only then felt the lingering hand on his back.

"You can. I could hold you up, or you could fall on me and we could consider it a hug. Or, I'll just -"

"I have a better idea, Woo."

And before Jinwoo could ask what, Hyuk bent down and gave him a warm kiss on the lips
