star gazer

jacob likes the stars, and sangyeon can't sleep

Jacob always liked the stars. He couldn't put a finger as to why he was so infatuated with them, but they never failed to bring him peace. Whether it was the way the indigos and the blacks swirled together so effortlessly to create the sea in which the stars laid in, the dullness of some and the brightness of others, or simply when one would wink down at him, Jacob could always count on the stars to make him smile, even if it was just the slightest twitch of his lips.

He practically lived alone; he had a roommate - Kevin was his name - but he was rarely over, always spending time at his friends' apartments or at his girlfriend's place. He was alone most nights, and those were the nights he would pull up his bedroom window, climb out onto the sill, and shimmy his way up onto the roof of his apartment building. Sure he could take the safe route and use the stairs, but where's the fun in that? It gave him a sense of rebellion, a spike of fear whenever his foot slipped or a bubbling feeling of anxiety as he neared the top of the building.

His hand would slap around the concrete lip while his other would sling his backpack over his head and onto the roof. He'd pull himself up with the help of his frantic feet scraping against the bricks and fall onto his back with a heave of crisp night air. He didn't bother being overly cautious with his noise - there was an attic loaded to the brim with dusty old supplies between him and the uppermost tenants, and the neighboring building was a good 30 feet away.

So, once Jacob had calmed down and some of his sweat had dried, he'd squish his backpack under his head and gaze into the never ending sky of stars. It was like looking at a lullaby rather than hearing it; not the lyrics, but the soothing and comforting melody that lullabies would bring. It was the twinkle of the stars that brought Jacob's whirling mind at ease and the leisurely drifting of the black clouds that made his eyes heavy and heart calm. Each night when he was alone, he'd make the life-risking journey up to the roof to stare up at the stars, and each of those nights he didn't feel so alone anymore.

Maybe it was because of the stars, or maybe it was because of the boy who would watch Jacob from his window in the building over.

Sangyeon never wanted to come off as a creep, but in the late hours of the night, there wasn't much else to do other than watch reruns of old sitcoms or to tackle the pile of essays he was given as homework, neither of which he had the energy to do. So during a night that was no different than others, Sangyeon happened to gaze out the window of his bedroom to find a boy climbing up the side of the adjacent apartment building. It was sure a sight to see - no one would even think to do such a thing - and it made Sangyeon's heart leap with fear. He practically threw himself onto his window and watched with anxious eyes as the boy lugged himself up with each sweeping arm motion.

His thudding heart would calm itself once the boy slung himself onto the roof, and as the hours passed, Sangyeon would still be at his window, occasionally throwing glances at the roof to make sure he could still see the boy's faded ripped jeans or his wild blonde hair. It made him feel like a guardian angel, looking over the boy and watching him from a distance, always there to flinch and press his hand against the glass whenever the boy's foot would slip off a brick.

And that's how Sangyeon spent most of his nights: watching the blonde scale his apartment building, waiting for him to venture back down and snake his way back into his window, and to make the futile attempt to sleep. Insomniac Sangyeon spent his nights watching Jacob admire the stars, and Jacob spent his nights with the night sky, unbeknownst to Sangyeon's protective stares.

One night was particularly hot, and be it like most nights, Jacob was alone, splayed out on his bed with the sheets balled at his feet. His window had already been shoved open in an attempt to let some of the night's air wander in, but the universe wasn't on his side as his bedroom was still hot and mucky. Jacob's head rolled to the side and his eyes caught sight of the time; 2:39 a.m. it read, and Jacob sighed before swiping his backpack off the floor.

He wasn't dreading the thought of finally getting to watch the stars - he was rather excited to see the twinkling balls of light after days of essay-writing by lamplight - but as he pulled himself out and up to stand on the windowsill, he bit his lip at a realization: he's going to have to climb up to the roof in the humid spring heat.

Jacob was lucky he wore a sleeveless top after his shower, for the sweat on the back of his neck and atop his forehead would have tripled by now. With one last heave and a choked pant, Jacob stumbled onto the roof of his apartment building, dropping his backpack at his feet. He silently congratulated himself as he positioned his arms to hang off his head, his body teetering from the slight dizziness that came with his feat.

He peeled back some of the blonde strands of hair that stuck to his neck when something flew up. It hit the roof with a loud thud and bounced around, creating several more clangs and bangs that surely would have woken up the tenants next door. Jacob jumped and shouted out a curse, scurrying away and abandoning his backpack. His eyes whizzed around the concrete roof until they landed on a plastic water bottle; it was up against a vent and glinting in the moonlight, almost like it was teasing him.

He edged towards the bottle and picked it up tentatively, spinning it and inspecting it for anything suspicious. Jacob's brows furrowed and he looked up to where the bottle whizzed up from; he tossed the plastic bottle from hand to hand as he walked towards the side of his building. He shimmied his beaten sneakers until they pressed into the concrete lip and peeked over the edge.

Jacob did intend to see someone, but he never intended to see someone like him. There, leaning against the window with his arm draped out, was a brown-haired boy. His eyes were wide and beautiful with his lips quirked in one corner, hair like bronze wire shielding his forehead.

His voice was quiet and strained when he spoke. "Thought you'd need some, Star Gazer."

The nickname struck something within Jacob and made the words in his throat jumble. "Um...Thanks." He wiggled the bottle in his hand. "How'd you know I was up here?"

"You tend to make a lot of noise," He chuckled, and the smile that accompanied the noise had Jacob's heart thump. "Talking, singing, shouting..."

Jacob brought his free hand to rub at his neck sheepishly. "Oh...I'm sorry. Did I wake you?"

"No, no, I was awake for a while." The boy shuffled, bringing his arm back into the window and opening his palm for his head to fall into. The moon was bright tonight, and Jacob swore he could see the stars reflected in the boy's eyes, even if they were a ways away.

Jacob twisted the cap of the water bottle open, raised to his lips, and chugged a hefty amount. He lowered the bottle and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand when the brown-haired boy asked, "So, what brings you here at 3 a.m.? Ghosts? Spirits of past tenants? Simply bored?"

Jacob smiled. "As fun as that sounds, that's not it. I'm here for the stars." He lets his head fall back and gazes into the sparkly black abyss, a dreamy smile stretching his lips.

"That's cute." Jacob's head snapped down and met the boy's caramel eyes. "You look so enthralled by them. I think it's cute that the stars have you in such a tight hold."

"Yeah...They bring me peace, the calm that my life never seems to have. And it sucks that they only come out at night." Jacob took another long sip from the bottle. "Why are you up so late?"

The boy blinked, almost like he was resurfacing from a daydream. "Can't sleep."

   "Stressed?"

   "Insomnia."

Jacob nods and hums. "It must get boring being up most nights."

"Not these past few months, with you always climbing up and down from the roof." The boy's smile was back, and Jacob almost smiled too.

An idea popped into his head, one that made his chest tighten and face heat up. A bead of sweat rolled down Jacob's neck, he finished off the last of the water in the bottle, and discarded it behind him before clearing his throat. The boy looked up from wherever he was looking to meet Jacob's eyes, and it took everything in him to not complement them.

"Instead of watching me climb up here and lay around, why don't you join me?"

The boy shook his head. "No, I wouldn't want to ruin your special nights."

"You could make those nights more special." Jacob blurted out. The boy's eyes widened and his head detached from his palm. He eventually sighed out a laugh, and Jacob too laughed, more awkwardly than the other, but the boy didn't seem to notice.

"But how would I get over to your building? I'm not jumping, I could die."

"You use your building's roof, simple. We aren't too far apart, and we haven't woken anyone up, so we aren't being too loud. And besides, it'll make nights go by a lot faster."

The boy sighed again, shaking his head and carding a hand through his hair. "Alright, we can start our little dates tomorrow."

Jacob's face flushed a light pink, and he hoped that the boy couldn't see it through the darkness. "You have nicknames for everything, don't you?"

"Makes everything cuter." He stood up, but ducked his head out the window to glance at Jacob again. "Want another one, Star Gazer?" He pointed to Jacob's empty hand.

"If you don't mind." Jacob nodded, and the boy waved his hand. He disappeared for a second before returning with another plastic bottle in hand. The boy smirked and - after locking eyes with Jacob - tossed the bottle at him; Jacob hurriedly trotted back and caught the bottle in one deft motion. It was cold against his clammy hand, and it was just then Jacob realized how hot he really was.

   "Oh, and the name's Jacob."

"Jacob," The other echoed. "I'm Sangyeon, and I like Star Gazer better."

Jacob rolled his eyes, flicking a damp strand of hair out of his eyes. "Lemme guess, because it's cuter."

"You betcha!" Sangyeon said, firing a wink at the boy.

   "Whatever."
