Chapter 6: The Next Episode

NO ONE'S POV:

Rue's Narration: Christopher and (Y/N)'s father demanded excellence.

(A flashback is shown of a young McKay doing football drills before practice.)

Rue's Narration: As much as he hated his father for the pressure he put on him, he knew it was because he was special, because he had a gift, because he saw something in him that could one day lead to greatness.

(Another flashback is shown. This one is young McKay fighting another football player after he muttered something to him. The other football player starts getting the upper hand until young Y/N tackles him off his brother. Before the referee can separate them, Y/N rips the opposing football player's helmet off. This disqualifies the McKay brothers.)

Mr. McKay: You get emotional, you lose. You get angry, you lose.

Young McKay: Dad, he called me--

Mr. McKay: I don't give a good goddamn. Why do you think he's talking to you in the first place?

Young McKay: Because he's--

Mr. McKay: Because he's trying to get a rise out of you. Trying to make you upset, lose focus. That's his game. That's the world's game. They want to push on you, poke on you, see exactly how much you can take. And how much you can take is what will ultimately define you. Because the measure of a man is in how he reacts.

Young McKay: How am I supposed to react?

Mr. McKay: By taking everything you feel, all your frustrations, your anger, your rage, you bottle it up, you take your position, and when that snap comes, you let it explode. Now, (Y/N). I'm not too upset with you. Do you know why?

Young (Y/N): Because I--

Mr. McKay: Because you had your brother's back. I know if it was reversed, Chris would've done the same. But in your case, I'm taking you out of football.

Young (Y/N): What?! Why?

Mr. McKay: I'm gonna train you for something else.

(Cut to a more recent flashback where we see McKay with the football team.)

Rue's Narration: The truth was, McKay was shy, so was (Y/N). But winning gave them confidence.

Rue's Narration: And that confidence was the result of his dad's belief. Routine. Routine. Routine. He was recruited to play division one football at the state college, 30 miles from his house. He began to imagine a life in the NFL. He knew he was smarter than most football players, and that he would take the money he earned and invest it wisely. He would use it to build an empire. And then he got to college, and he realized that everyone on the team was as good as him, if not better. He spent all of preseason on the bench. When the offensive coordinator would break down plays, he'd find his mind wandering, trying to do the math on the odds of him going pro. If there were 129 D1 teams, and 85 players per team, that made him one of 10,965. And he realized...he didn't stand a chance of going pro.

Rue's Narration: But at the same time, he started dating Cassie. And as stupid as it sounds, he fell in love with her. That's probably what was getting in the way. Cassie is all he ever thought about, and those fucking photos and that fucking video. He just couldn't understand how she could have so little respect for herself. But the thing that really pissed him off was when she played dumb about it like at the carnival. I mean, even her mother said it. But he also liked the way she made him feel. And he liked the way she dressed to a certain point. But it's not like he would say anything, he wasn't that possessive. And he liked how she'd walk in the room, and every guy would turn their head. That's what made it fun. They were jealous of him because she was his. (Y/N) on the other hand...

Rue's Narration: Is much closer to his dream than his brother. As he's said before he's undefeated and the current CAMO Bantamweight champion. Because of those two facts, he's about to be on the UFC's radar. This all started after his father pulled him out of football and made him join a mixed martial arts gym. After about a month, he was fully committed to the game. Complete gym rat. Most times, his coaches would ban him from even coming in because he wouldn't give his body time to rest. Christopher and (Y/N) are kinda like the Jones brothers. Except one of them being addicted to cocaine. Anyway, onto (Y/N) and Lexi. Now, (Y/N) would be the first person to tell you that he wasn't the best when it came to girls. It's not like he didn't have confidence, he just thought they would immediately turn him down so there wasn't a point in trying. But when he saw Lexi...

Rue's Narration: He had to try. Their relationship doesn't have the same problem as their sibling's. Due to Lexi. Obviously. If there was a "problem" with them it would be that they haven't kissed yet. Of course (Y/N) wanted to kiss her but he wanted her to give him the go-ahead. Didn't matter to him because he liked her. A lot. It also helps that Lexi liked him a lot too.

(We see Y/N ring the doorbell of the Howard house.)

[DOORBELL RINGS]

(Y/N): Kinda cold.

(Lexi opens the door to see Y/N's costume.)

Lexi: You're...not wearing a shirt.

(That's because Y/N's going as a UFC fighter. He's wearing Reebok shorts & 4oz gloves.)

(Y/N): Part of my costume.

Lexi: I get it.

(Y/N): Like what you see?

Lexi: *looking at his abs* Yes.

(Y/N): I can put on a shirt if it's too much.

Lexi: No. You're fine.

(Y/N): Good. So, you are...

(He looks at what she's wearing along with her goatee and fro.)

(Y/N): Bob Ross?

Lexi: Yes! The PBS painter. I'm surprised you know who that is.

(Y/N): Who doesn't know Bob Ross? May I come in?

Lexi: Of course. Come on in.

(He follows Lexi in to see her mom.)

(Y/N): Ms. Howard.

(She looks at him from head to toe.)

Suze: See, Lexi? (Y/N) gets it.

(Y/N): Gets what?

Lexi: It's nothing.

(Y/N): Okay?

[DOORBELL RINGS]

(Lexi goes to open the door for Rue, Jules, & Kat.)

Lexi: I'm Bob Ross. The painter from PBS?

Kat, Jules, & Rue: [chuckles]

Suze: [laughs] Hey, creepy. The whole point of Halloween is to look attractive.

Lexi: No, it's not.

(The girls walk in.)

Suze: Oh, really? You do me a favor and count how many girlfriends of yours are dressed up like 50-year-old men. Report back to me.

(They notice Y/N's costume.)

Kat: Damn, (Y/N).

(Y/N): Hello, Kat.

Jules: You keep it tight.

Rue: Yes, you look very fit.

(Y/N): You guys are gonna make me blush.

(Cassie walks down the stairs dressed as Alabama Worley from True Romance.)

Cassie: Is it too much?

All: No.

Suzie: Absolutely not.

Kat: Wow.

Suzie: Now, (Y/N), be honest, don't you think Lexi should've worn something like that Halloween?

Lexi: Mom.

Suzie: Let him answer.

(Y/N): Honestly? No.

Suzie: I wasn't expecting that response.

(Y/N): I mean...

(He looks at Lexi.)

(Y/N): She's a pretty sexy Bob Ross.

Lexi: *blushes*

Girls: Aw.

Suzie: You've found yourself a keeper, Lexi.

(Cut to the party where Rue, Lexi, & Y/N are watching Jules dance.)

(Y/N): She's really going in.

Lexi: Is she okay?

Rue: I don't know.

Lexi: Does she normally drink?

Rue: No.

Lexi: Something's definitely going on. This must be weird.

Rue: What?

Lexi: Like, being a teenager, but not really being able to do teenager stuff.

Rue: Yeah, well, when I'm an adult, I won't be able to do adult things, either.

(Y/N): Love that attitude.

Lexi: Is that Gia?

(They look over to see Gia getting high with Troy.)

Rue: You gotta be fucking joking.

(Y/N): [groans] It's always something with one of them.

(Rue, Y/N, & Lexi walks towards them.)

Gia: What are you doing here?

Rue: What am I doing here? What the fuck are you doing here?

Troy: Getting lit.

(Y/N): I should drag your ass back home.

Troy: Come on, bro. It's a party. Lighten up.

Rue: I'll deal with your ass later. Get up.

Troy: What?

(Y/N): You heard the lady.

Rue: I said get the fuck up.

(Cut to the garage where the threatening of Troy begins.)

Rue: Now let me just be real with you. You even been to rehab, Roy?

Troy: No, I'm Troy--

(Y/N): Actually that's Troy--

Rue: (Y/N), I get he's your brother and all but he's messing with my sister so if you could just stand there and be intimidating, I would greatly appreciate that.

(Y/N): My bad. Please continue.

(She shifts her attention to Troy.)

Rue: Roy, Troy. I don't give a fuck. I said have you ever been to rehab?

Troy: No.

Rue: Well, in rehab, there are some real fucked-up motherfuckers. We're talking about people who are on the hook for armed robbery, attempted murder, real fucked-up shit. Hardcore motherfuckers.

Lexi: It's true. I went once. It was scary.

Rue: You know what happens when you spend an extended amount of time in rehab? You tend to make friends with those hardcore motherfuckers.

Troy: Yo, (Y/N). You gonna let her talk to me like this?

(Y/N): Yeah.

Rue: So let me be very clear with you. If you so much as go past first base with my little sister, or try to get her high again, I will call Omar, I will call Marlo. I will call Avon, I will call Brother Mouzone, I will call fuckin' Bodie, and I will call fucking Stringer.

(Y/N): [whispers] Bell?

Rue: I will have these motherfuckers standing outside your front lawn. Do you hear me?

Lexi: Or even Wee-bey.

Rue: A hundred percent. Do you know what kind of people these are? These are the kind of people who will strip you fucking naked, and go to work on you with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch. Do you hear me?

Lexi: Rue, I think he understands.

Rue: I don't think he understands.

Lexi: Tell her you understand.

(Y/N): Right now, bro.

Troy: I understand.

Rue: There you go. Now go in there, tell my little sister she looks nice.

(As the party continues, Y/N & Lexi are seen leaning against a wall together. He starts playing with her afro wig.)

Lexi: [chuckles] Stop.

(Y/N): Ha, sorry. I wish I could get my hair to look like that.

Lexi: You can't?

(Y/N): I mean, I probably could. But I'd have to pick it constantly which is time consuming and the way my hair grows, painful. You see, my hair's not naturally curly--

Lexi: No need to go on any further. My hair isn't naturally curly either.

(Y/N): *smiles* Something we have in common.

Lexi: So...do you want to dance?

(Y/N): Lead the way, Bob.

Lexi: [chuckles]

(The two make their way towards the other teens dancing & join in on the fun. However, they don't notice Daniel & Cassie going upstairs. Eventually, McKay makes a surprise appearance.)

(Y/N): Chris!

McKay: Hey, bro.

(The brothers walk up to each other & McKay playfully punches his brother's abs.)

McKay: Like granite.

(Y/N): Maybe one day. [chuckles]

(They hug.)

McKay: You seen Cassie?

(Y/N looks around.)

(Y/N): Not recently. But I'm sure she's around.

McKay: True, true. I'm gonna go find her.

(Lexi watches this & texts her sister to no reply. McKay starts walking up the same stairs Daniel & Cassie walked up which Lexi notices.)

Lexi: (Y/N)!

(Y/N): What's up?

Lexi: Do you trust me?

(Y/N): Why?

Lexi: Do you trust me?

(Y/N): Yes. Yes, I trust you.

(She grabs his hand.)

Lexi: Then follow me.

(Just as McKay is about to open the door to the room Daniel & Cassie are in, Lexi & Y/N get his attention.)

Lexi: Hey!

McKay: Lex. [chuckles] Of course you two would go together.

(Y/N): Yes, sir.

McKay: Have you seen your sister?

Lexi: Oh, she went home a while ago.

McKay: All right, yeah, 'cause she's not answering my phone calls right now.

Lexi: Oh, she's probably sleeping.

(Y/N): That makes sense.

McKay: All right, well, when you see her, can you tell her to give me a call?

Lexi: Yeah, definitely.

McKay: Okay. Thank you. Hey. Aren't you, uh, supposed to be that painter guy from PBS?

Lexi: Yeah, Bob Ross.

McKay: Bob Ross. That's funny.

Lexi: Thank you.

McKay: My brother likes you a lot. Like, A LOT.

(Y/N): Holy shit, she knows that. Now leave.

(Minutes later, they see Rue leave & follow her out.)

Lexi: Rue. What happened?

Rue: Um, I'm a burden.

Lexi: What?

(Y/N): Impossible.

Rue: I know what you're trying to do, (Y/N), but you haven't known me that long. Yeah, Um, I'm sorr--I'm just...I'm a burden, and it is what it is, and it's embarrassing, and it's stupid, but, um, it's true. So, I'm sorry.

Lexi: No, don't say that.

(Lexi hugs her.)

Lexi: You're not a burden.

(Jules sees them outside.)

Jules: Rue! What's wrong?

Lexi: I think we're gonna head out.

Jules: No. No, it's just 'cause you're not dancing with me.

Rue: That's not it, Jules.

Lexi: Jules, you're soaking wet, and really drunk.

Jules: You're dry. And dressed like Bob Ross.

(Y/N): *glares*

Jules: Stop glaring at me, (Y/N). It was just a joke.

Lexi: Okay, I think we're gonna go.

Jules: [laughs] Don't be fucking boring. This whole town is so fucking boring. I don't care.

Rue: Uh, would you like to go with us, Jules?

(She shakes her head no.)

Rue: Okay, well, then, how are you gonna get home?

Jules: I don't know. And I don't care.

(She rejoins the party.)

Lexi: Okay, let's go.

(Y/N): [sighs] You two go ahead. I will take Jules home.

Rue: I can't ask you to do that.

(Y/N): You're not. I'm just...I'm just a good guy.

Rue: Still, I can't--I can't fucking leave her.

(As Rue, Lexi, & Y/N try to convince Jules to leave with them, Nate & Maddy walk to a welcomed crowd. Jules & Nate share a look that Rue notices almost immediately.)
