Lesson 101: How to land a job Successfully
***

Kairav stares at the man for a full minute, eyes unblinking, body unmoving and then his stomach grumbles, announcing that his hanger hasn't died down yet. So, without taking his eyes off the man, he takes another bite, all while praying for his life.

"I said give me my pizza!" The man yells again, taking the box away from Kairav but before he can take the slice, Kairav shoves the entire thing in his mouth.

Kairav was damn right with his assessment. This man is a big asshole. Who takes food away from a hungry boy? He glares at the man, narrowing his eyes at him.

"I'm an asshole just because I didn't leave you tips?" The man asks, voice intimidating with a hint of amusement.

"That's one reason." Kairav mumbles.

The man casts his gaze at him. Instead of a scowl like Kairav expected, he has a look planted on his face that says he is interested.

"What's the other reason?"

"You mean the second reason. It's in your hand." Kairav replies politely though his words are anything but polite.

The man chuckles to himself, sending shivers down Kairav's spine. Damn, he shouldn't really be laughing this way. He sounds creepier than Kairav.

"I'm gonna leave you a one star review." Kairav rolls his eyes at the empty threat.

"Have you ever seen a droplet of water… dirty, straight out of drain droplet of water, making a difference to the vast amount of water of the ocean?" Kairav questions, insulting the man with the "dirty" metaphor.

The man in question glares back at him, annoyed by the boy's cocky smile.

"Then I will write such a bad review that you will be fired immediately." The man plays along, not minding that part of his brain which is telling him that he is being childish and petty.

"Why don't you write a script for a soap opera while you are at it?" Kairav retorts back, bringing his knees closer to his chest as his only means of protection, if the man decides to attack.

The man whose name he knows now but he isn't gonna use, clenches his jaw tightly, seemingly holding himself back from snapping Kairav's neck.

"You seem like it will hurt your soul if you held a pen probably. Are you sure you can write a review?" Kairav should really stop before his murder becomes tomorrow's flash news!

Lucky for him, the weird man seems to be going through a different phrase right now. He looks no longer angry, instead he is all smiles and chuckles. For some reasons, Kairav finds it scarier than his anger. Damn why isn't the damn door opening yet?

"Fine then. I will hire someone to write it for me." There comes a sarcastic reply.

"After that you can hire the same person to write a soap opera for you. But!" Kairav's mouth moulds into the shape of an "O" as he dramatically continues, "That must be too much for you. I know it must not be easy for you to spend money on writers….and delivery men."

"You just wait here, kid. I'm tired of arguing now-"

"Yeah, I won't be going anywhere, nor will you. "

Before the man can go back to his hulk mode, the lift door suddenly opens. How is that possible? They didn't even hear someone working on the door. But that doesn't mean that they aren't relieved to be away from each other.

"Fucking finally!" The man curses under his breath, standing up with the speed of lightning.

"What happened?" The man asks the lady who always pats Kairav's head whenever he comes to deliver the pizzas.

"I don't know. I just saw that the lift wasn't working. Called the maintenance room, they did something and boom!" The lady replies, scanning her boss and his surroundings and stopping at Kairav.

"Oh hey, cutie! That's why you haven't come up with pizzas yet." She mutters, placing a hand on her hip.

Kairav waves at her meekly, not making any effort to get up. He will have to go down anyway.

The boss opens his mouth to retort but then he turns as pale as a ghost as he turns to Kairav.

"Fucking hell! Act like you are sick, like you are dying!" The man instructs, making Kairav raise an eyebrow in confusion.

"Stop her or else you will be fired!" The man barks orders at the secretary who scatters away as soon as she comes.

When the man glares at him with his icy brown eyes, Kairav squeaks out, "Ah! I'm sick. I'm gonna die." Without any effort put to it. He sounds bland and bored.

"Put in some effort, will ya?" The man says, standing in front of him.

"Ahh! I'm sick?"

"I will give you those leftover pizzas!"

"Ahhhh! I think I'm gonna die! Someone take me to the hospital!!" Kairav yells at the top of his lungs, giving his 110%, making choking noises for extra measure.

"I'm sorry, Priya! We will talk later. This kid needs to go to the hospital urgently!" The man speaks to someone, frantically pressing the lift buttons.

"What was that?" Kairav asks once the door is closed.

"Nothing." The man dismisses him, inhaling sharply as if he just dodged a bullet.

For a while they ignore each other's presence like a plague. Well, Kairav got his pizza so he doesn't need to talk to the man anyway. But he doesn't want to eat them now. He is already full. Better save them for later. He refrains himself from asking anything even though millions of thoughts are racing in his mind.

Their relief of being done with the faulty elevator comes to an end when the lift stops once again. Fuck. Vikram should really renovate the whole building.

"It's all your fault." Kairav says, sounding accusatory.

He would get stuck anyway if he had taken the elevator down but the man doesn't need to know that. He is the boss. So, one way or another, he is responsible for it.

The man kicks the door with all of his force only to get hurt in the process. He almost lands on his ass but somehow he balances his composure. Kairav cracks a laugh at that.

The man keeps yelling but no one answers. There must be someone who is trying to use the lift, right?

"Where the hell is everyone?" The man yells.

Unfortunately for Kairav, the man's bizarre tactics make him laugh so much that he chokes on thin air.

"I think… I'm gonna puke. I'm gonna be sick." Kairav says, wheezing.

"The act is over. No one is watching, kid."

One look at Kairav and he knows that the kid isn't kidding which is ironic and a missed opportunity, really.

"Don't you dare." The man warns, inching away from Kairav. He would teleport himself through the drift between the doors if he could actually.

Kairav makes some gagging noise, indicating that he would vomit anytime.

"If you vomit here, I will make you eat your own vomit." Kairav just looks at the man with his puppy doe eyes. How can someone be so cruel?

"No, you won't." Kairav argues, voice holding the confidence that his ashen face is lacking.

"And how can you be so sure?"

"Because I will sue you for assault." Kairav deadpans, dry heaving.

Kairav is this close to gag. The man looks scared out of his wits. The scene would be comical and Kairav would laugh his ass off if he didn't have this overwhelming urge to gag.

"I will do anything! Just don't vomit!" The man yells in panic, looking absolutely petrified.

"Anything you say?" Kairav whispers slowly, smirking through the pain.

He can try his best to control himself if that's the offer. Yes, he can. After ages, it feels like his luck is smiling down on him because the lift starts moving again.

While Kairav enjoys his coke and pizza, the rich business man is busy being restless, tapping his fingers on the table continuously.

"Get it over with, kid. I have work to do."

Rolling his eyes, Kairav takes his sweet time enjoying his food. He almost landed his ass in the hospital because of the man. He deserves to be compensated. No matter how big of an asshole the man is, Kairav is glad that they are on the same page on it.

"How about you tell me about the reason why you asked me to act sick." Kairav urges, sipping on his cola.

"Shut up."

"I will. It's you who need to speak." He shrugs his shoulders, keeping his eyes glued to the man until he sees a sigh of defeat.

"My business partner was there." The man starts despite looking like he would be anywhere but here, sharing his sob story with Kairav.

"And?"

"I fucked up, ok? I needed to coax a client to sign a deal."

"Don't tell me you punched him or something." Kairav laughs at how absurd he sounds. However, his laugh dies down when he notices the serious look on the man's face.

"Oh, you did punch him." Kairav shouldn't be so surprised.

"And now your business partner is pissed at you." Kairav continues for him. The man just nods his head.

"And you are here with me not because you want to compensate, but because you are scared of your business partner and you need a place to hide." Kairav grins at him, proud of himself for decoding the rich man's intention.

"And now I'm done hiding." The man utters, trying to stand up to leave.

"Wait!"

"What now?"

"You told me you would do anything if I didn't vomit." Kairav reminds him, giving him a knowing look.

"And I did. I bought you food."

"No. It was the payback for playing sick."

The man groans, wanting nothing more than taking the kid and tossing him away to another country.

"So what do you want now, your highness?"

"A job." Kairav replies.

"Look-"

"I have a lot of leverage on you." Kairav warns, a playful smirk playing on his lips.

"Oh? Let's hear them out." The man utters, folding his hands over his chest.

"The property you own is faulty, I almost landed myself into the hospital because of it." The man rolls his eyes but Kairav doesn't stop.

"I got 2 hours late for work. I missed all my deliveries. I will probably also lose my job. I can sue you for that. After all, the building is yours and it's your responsibility to keep an eye on maintenance." The young businessman narrows his eyes, not liking how cunning the kid is.

"You gave me a promise that you would do anything I ask if I didn't vomit which I didn't."

"And the last one is my favourite." Kairav gives him a little teasing smile before continuing, "I can tell your business partner that you orchestrated a fake act to get away from her clutches." The man's face is devoid of any colour by the time Kairav is done.

This kid is something.

"Congratulations on being Kairav Sharma's employer. He hopes you won't let him down and work diligently to be the best boss ever!"
